Amy had many physical differences—lots of reasons for other kids to make fun of her. Her eyes weren’t straight. Her glasses were an inch thick. And she had really ugly teeth.

阅读下文,从所给的四个选项中选出一个最佳答案。

Last week Lu visited England. He stayed with my grandmother. He found it was strange.

‘I don’t know why, but I frightened your grandmother a lot. When I arrived, I gave her a purse from Huai’an. She looked in it and asked me to take it back. Then I saw a red spider (蜘蛛) on the table, and I killed it for her. She seemed very unhappy. Do English people like spiders?

‘Later we went shopping. Someone was painting a shop front, so there was a ladder. Grandmother stopped me from walking under it and said I must walk around it. I liked the shops and bought some lovely rose soap for my mother, a smart umbrella for my father and some new shoes for myself. When we got back, I put the shoes on the table and opened the umbrella to check if it was all right. Your grandmother came in and screamed!

‘Then I broke a small mirror in the bathroom. Your grandmother’s face went white. I felt very sorry. When I left, I gave your grandmother some flowers. She counted and there were 13. She didn’t like them.’

I explained to Lu, ‘My grandmother follows the old customs. You must not give someone an empty purse, or they will have no money. You must not kill a “money spider”, or the same will happen. Also it is very unlucky to walk under a ladder or put new shoes on the table. An open umbrella in a house means someone will die. Birthday Traditions in Different Countries

England Certain symbolic objects are mixed into the birthday cake as it’s being prepared. If your piece of cake has a coin in it, then you will be rich. Also, when it’s your birthday, your friends give you the “bumps”. They lift you in the air by your hands and feet and raise you up and down to the floor; one for each year you lived, then another one or two for luck.

Denmark A flag is flown outside a window to show that someone who lives in that house is having a birthday. Presents are placed around the child’s bed while he/she is sleeping, so he/she will see them at once upon awakening.

Holland Special year birthdays such as 5, 10, 15, 20, 21 are called “crown” years. The birthday child receives an especially large gift on a crown year birthday. The family also decorates the birthday child’s chair at the dining room table with flowers, paper streamers and balloons.

Canada The birthday child’s nose is greased (涂抹) with butter for good luck. The greased nose makes the child too slippery for bad luck to catch him/her. In some parts of Canada, the birthday person even receives a punch (一拳) for each year he/she is alive and then one for good luck.

Brazil The birthday child receives a pull on the ear for each year he/she has been alive. The birthday person also gives the first piece of cake to his/her most special friend or relative, usually mom or dad.

Korea There is a big family party on the first birthday. The table is set with food, and four items: a pencil, a ruler, thread, and money. The item that the baby chooses is said to forecast his/her future: excellent student, good with hands, long life or riches.

There have always been a lot of commonly believed but false (虚假的) ideas about being fat and doing exercise. Some people believe that they can't help putting on weight as they get older, while others hold that if they stop exercising, their muscles (肌肉) will turn into fat. Here are some more myths.

I’ll never lose weight—I come from a fat family

Wrong! While we can't change the body type we are born with, we can't blame our genes for making us fat. There's plenty of evidence that fatness runs in families, and the main reason is that they share the same habit of eating too much and exercise too little.

I am fat because I burn calories slowly Wrong! Fatness is not caused by a slow metabolism (新陈代谢). In fact, although fat people consume (消耗) more energy than slim people, they also fail to realize how much they eat. Keeping a diary can help you work out your daily food intake more accurately (精确地).

Exercise is boring Wrong! Anything will become boring if you do it again and again. The key is to develop a balanced and varied (各种的) program that's fun as well as progressive (不断进步的). If you enjoy a Sunday walk, take a different mute. If you do yoga, try a tai chi class.

No pain, no gain Wrong! Exercise is not meant to hurt. Indeed, pain is your body telling you something is wrong, and continuing to exercise could lead to serious injury (伤害). You may experience mild discomfort as you begin to exercise regularly, but this is your body adapting to the positive changes in your lifestyle and the aches should disappear quickly. If they don't, rest and ask for medical advice.

A. It is the family genes that make people fat.

B. People are fat because they consume too little energy.

A. By taking all kinds of exercise.

B. By choosing simple exercise.

C. By doing regular exercise.

D. By sticking to outdoor exercise.

3.What is the writer's opinion about "No pain, no gain" in exercising?

A. Keeping fit is essentially a painful experience

B. Exercise should be stopped if continuous pain is felt.

C. Pain in exercise is a precondition (前提) for reaching your goal.

D. Getting used to pain leads to positive changes in your body.

4.The underlined words “adapting to” means “_______” in Chinese.

A. 适应 B.顺从 C. 摆脱 D. 陷入

任务型阅读

阅读下面短文,根据要求完成下列各题。

A

Nowadays people are making themselves beautiful in Korean ways.

“Thank goodness you have double eyelids (双眼皮). Your parents will save a lot of money.” said a family friend when I was five years old. Double eyelids, which almost all the white people have, are rare among Northeast Asians. Only 25% of South Koreans are born with double eyelids.

I never quite understood how having double eyelids saved my parents money until this spring. When I came back to Seoul, everywhere I noticed cosmetic surgery clinics (整形诊所) and advertisements with South Korean women—tall, thin, with milky skin, long legs, nice big eyes and perfect noses. I found that South Korean beauty meant looking as “white” as possible.

Cosmetic surgery has a kind of magical attraction to women — the promise of beauty. Women are often sure that suffering is necessary and worthy in order to be beautiful. This suffering is not for nothing. It is believed that beauty leads to attracting a better-looking partner, which then leads to a better-looking child and a better life.

Appearance is starting to be more important in work places. People with good appearance can have more chances. For example, my 29-year-old brother, who is slim and very tall, gets more job chances than his best friend, who is short and heavy, though both of them came from the same college, had the same good marks in their studies. In fact, many South Koreans believe that physical beauty equals happiness.

1.How many South Koreans are born with double eyelids?

2.When did the writer understand having eyelids saved his parents money?

3.Does cosmetic surgery have much attraction to women according to the writer?

4.What kind of people can get more job chances?

5. What do you think of cosmetic surgery?
