完形填空

阅读下面的短文,掌握其大意,然后从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选择最佳选项。

There's always hope

I was sitting around the other morning thinking about some of my former (以前的) students. When I do that, my thoughts always turn to Vincent.

Eighteen years ago, on the first day of third grade, when I had my class write something about themselves, he just sat there. So I took him outside to see what was wrong. “You can ___ about something else; anything you want,” I offered. He turned to me and shouted, “I can’t write!” and threw his pencil.

Vincent was difficult and ______. He acted out. He threw things. He refused to work, to be quiet, to sit down.

So these many years later, I wondered what he was up to. With time on my hands, I googled him and looked him up on Facebook and before long I found him. And after a few texts we agreed to meet. And he told me his ______.

Vincent knew he was smart, but he also knew he couldn’t do what other kids did. He had to move around and talk. For him, sitting still, listening and reading, didn't ______. The more he tried to do the things on his terms, the more we forced him to do the things on our terms and the angrier he got. The angrier he got, the more trouble he got into.

In other words, we _______ him.

But he wouldn’t let me tell him that. He took full responsibility for his behavior. He remembered feeling ______ for acting out.

That _____me. Kids like Vincent are always angry about something; they hold the world responsible for the consequence(后果).

This story also had one of us turning Vincent around. But none of us did that for him. There were no excellent teachers like Annie Sullivan or Jaime Escalante. That didn’t mean we didn’t______. I remember countless conversations, trying to understand him, going to his Little League games.

It was Vincent who turned Vincent around, along with a junkie (吸毒者) house painter he worked with after failing through high school. This guy clearly scared (惊吓) him straight; talked him into going to ______.

But it was Vincent who attended classes and got straight A’s for two years. And it was Vincent who got accepted into ten different universities, including Stanford and UW. And it was Vincent who landed a great job at a big tech company.

Vincent is completely different form 18 years ago. I couldn’t be happier for him.

And for me, the _____ is simple but powerful — there’s always hope.

When I began to move to Auckland to study the law, my mother was a little worried about the uncertainty of living in a place that was so different from India, where we lived. She worried about the shortage of jobs and the cultural differences that I would face.

I came to New Zealand in July 2013. I found the people were very nice and supportive. Soon after I arrived, I realized the importance of getting a part time job to make a living.

Deciding to do this on my own, I spent a whole day going from door to door for a job. However, I received a little or no reply. This became my daily activity after college for a few weeks.

One afternoon, I walked into a building to ask if there were any job chances. The people there were very surprised, and advised me not to continue my job search in that way. As I was about to leave, a secretary in the building came up to me and encouraged me to stay confident. He then offered to take me to the Royal Oak area to search for a job.

Along the way, I realized I had run out of copies of my resume (简历). The man stopped at his friend‟s office to make me 15 extra copies. He also gave me tips on dressing and speaking. I handed out my resume and went home. The following day, I received a call from a store in Royal Oak offering me a job.

Many children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance (pocket money). The purpose isto let children learn from experiences at an age when financial (财务的) mistakes are not very costly.

How much money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish is quite different from family to family. Timing is another consideration. Some children get a weekly allowance. Others get a monthly allowance.

In any case, parents should make clear what, if anything, the child is expected to pay for with the money. At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. If they do this, they will learn the hard way that spending must be done within a budget (预算). Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance. The object is to show young people that a budget requires a choice between spending and saving. Older children may be responsible enough to save money for larger costs, like clothing or electronics.

Many people who have written on the subject of allowances say it is not a good idea to pay your children for work around the home. These jobs are a normal part of family life. Paying children to do other work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works.

Allowances give children a chance to experience the three things they do with money. They can share it in the form of gifts or giving a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. Or they can save it.

Saving helps children understand that costly goals sometimes need to give up something. You have to cut costs and plan for the future. Requiring children to save part of their allowances can also open the door to future saving and investing. Many banks offer services to help children and teenagers learn about personal finance. A saving account (账户) is an excellent way to learn about the power of compound interest (复利息).

Compounding works by paying interest. So, for example, one dollar invested at two percent interest for two years will get two percent of one dollar and two cents, and so on. That may not seem like a lot, but over time it adds up.

1.Parents give their children allowance in order to ______.

A.let them make more money

B.pay for the housework they do

C.let them learn the value of money

D.help children manage family finance

2.What is the second paragraph mainly about?

A.The time to give allowance.

B.The way to spend allowance.

C.How much allowance given to children.

D.Considerations taken to give allowances.

3.Why are parents advised to offer children allowances as planned?

A.To have children save money for larger costs.

B.To give them more allowances next time.

C.To help children learn to make a budget.

D.To let children make fewer mistakes.

4.What does the writer try to tell us?

A.The ways of limiting allowances.

B.The advice on a better family budget.

C.Offering allowance to children properly.

D.Teaching children to use allowances wisely.
