WHY TO RECYCLE BATTERIES:

I strongly believe that we can have an important effect on anyone we meet. The right words at just the right time could totally change someone's life. That's what happened to me years ago.

When I was a 3-year-old boy, my parents discovered I was totally deaf. After asking many doctors, educational specialists and parents of other deaf children, they decided to put me in a mainstream school. All of my classmates and teachers would have normal hearing.

From the time I started going there in the third grade, I was the only deaf child at Blue Creek Elementary School in the small town of Latham, New York. From almost the first day there, the other kids made fun of me and called me names mainly because of my hearing aid and the way I talked.

I worried throughout Elementary school because, except the problems of "fitting in" with the other students, I also struggled with most of my schoolwork.

Although I seemed outgoing, my self-esteem(自尊心)was quite low. I saw myself as an ugly kid wearing a weird-looking box around his neck who wasn't even smart enough to keep up with the other kids.

Mrs. Jordan, my fifth-grade teacher, changed all of that with a simple three-word phrase. Mrs. Jordan was a large woman with a voice that bounced(反弹)off the walls of her tiny classroom. One morning, she asked the class a question.

I read her lips(嘴唇)and immediately raised my hand. For once I knew the answer. But, when she called on me, I was afraid. I took a deep breath, stood up slowly and answered Mrs. Jordan's question in a low voice.

I will never forget what happened next.

Everybody knows that Earth spins from west to east. That is to say, it appears to be turning counterclockwise (逆时针) rapidly when viewed from above the North Pole. But what if Earth started spinning the other way?

Scientists from Germany have made a computer simulation in which Earth spins in the opposite direction—clockwise when viewed from above the North Pole. This showed them some interesting things about the weather and geography on Earth, Live Science reported.

As Earth spins in a counterclockwise direction, it shapes certain ocean currents(洋流). The direction of ocean currents, together with winds, produces different weathers around the globe. More surprisingly, the Sahara Desert becomes an oasis.

However, deserts don't disappear. They just appear in some places in which they never appeared before. Deserts would cover North America, where countries like the United States and Canada lie. Sand dunes would replace the Amazon rainforest in South America.

If you have ever passed the cockpit(驾驶舱) in a flight and tried to understand your pilots' conversation, you probably didn't gain much from them. From terms like "niner" to "Zulu", pilot-speak can sound like its own language.

The special language is called "aviation English". According to the International Civil Aviation Organization(ICAO), pilots on international airlines and air traffic controllers on airlines need to speak "aviation English" when they communicate. The pronunciation of numbers should also follow exact standards. For example, zero(0) is always "zero", not "oh". 3 becomes "tree". 4 is called "fower",5 becomes "fife", and 9 becomes "niner".

There are also more colorful phrases that pilots say were produced in the sky and shared widely among them. For example, "Feet wet" warns air traffic controllers when a military aircraft is flying overwater. "Pan-pan" is reserved for communication with air traffic controllers. When pilots notice something unusual with their plane that stops short of an immediate emergency, they use "Pan-pan", a signal of urgency(紧迫) and attention.
