Not long ago, the only time you could see a robot was when you were reading a novel or watching a movie such as Star Wars (星球大战) . Today, however, a lot of things in science stories have been science facts. Robots are starting to appear in our everyday lives. These robots have different sizes, shapes, and colors. But they all have the same type of man-made “brain”. Leading the robot revolution (革命)are industrial(企业) robots that work in factories. Industrial(工业) robots can do different kinds of jobs that are often boring and sometimes dangerous. Robots are also coming to American homes, though not as quickly as they are entering factories. These robots aren’t as friendly and bright as those you saw in  Star Wars. But, their makers say, today’s home robots “walk”, sense objects(感知物体) in their way (and sometimes knock into them), and even carry objects (which they sometimes drop). Well, nobody is perfect.
We may laugh at home robot today, but some day they may see and hear better than humans do. We humans can only see certain wavelengths(波长) of light, and hear certain sounds. That’s because the abilities of our eyes and ears are limited. Robots, however, need not have the same limits as we have. Robot may also be equipped with devices that pick up information humans can’t. To understand what their sensing devices(传感器) pick up is a hard job. Remember, man—made brains handle(处理)information, including all kinds of data, as zeroes and ones. Imagine the difficulty in trying to explain to a robot what a football looks like—using only zeroes and ones.

  1. 1.

From the passage, we can see that factory robots _________.

    1. A.
help to improve other types of robots
    2. B.
are most active in industrial revolution
    3. C.
are playing a more important role than other types of robots
    4. D.
are the tallest type among robots
  2. 2.

It seems that home robots are __________________.

    1. A.
more widely used than factory robots
    2. B.
      less common than factory robots
    3. C.
capable of doing any kind of housework
    4. D.
free from making mistakes while performing(执行) duties
  3. 3.

Robots may deal with information that humans can’t. Which of the following is not one of the reasons?

    1. A.
They do not have so many limits as humans do.
    2. B.
      They have man-made brains.
    3. C.
They may be equipped with a special kind of sensing device.
    4. D.
They handle information by using zeroes and ones.
  4. 4.

The development of robots suggests that _________.

    1. A.
science and technology are developing fast
    2. B.
people are interested in new inventions
    3. C.
machines are more capable than humans
    4. D.
      robots can be very interesting
  5. 5.

According to this passage, present home robots ________.

    1. A.

    2. B.
are as capable as those in Star Wars

can pick up objects more quickly than humans

Have you ever suddenly felt that someone you know was in trouble—and he was? Have you ever dreamed something that came true later? Maybe you have ESP.
ESP stands for(代表) Extra Sensory Perception. It may be called a sixth sense. It seems to let people know about events before they happen, or events that are happening some distance away.
Here is an example: A woman was doing washing. Suddenly she screamed, “My father is dead!” I saw him sitting in the chair!” Just then. a telegram came. The woman’s father had died of a heart attack. He died sitting in a chair.
There are thousands of stories like this on record. Scientists are studying them to find out what is behind these strange mental messages. Here’s another example—one of hundreds of dreams that have come true.
A man dreamed he was walking along a road when a horse and carriage came by. The driver said, “There’s room for one more.” The man felt the driver was dead, so he ran away. The next day the man was getting on a crowded bus. The bus driver said, “There’s room for one more.” Then the man saw the driver’s face was the same face he had seen in the dream. He wouldn’t get on the bus. As the bus drove off, it crashed and burst into flames. Everyone was killed!
Some people say stories like these are lies or coincidences. Others, including some scientists say that ESP is true. From studies of  ESP, we may some day learn more about the human mind.

  1. 1.

People with ESP may know about ____________

    1. A.
      someone’s trouble
    2. B.
      events before they happen
    3. C.
      their dreams
    4. D.
      events after they happen
  2. 2.

From the passage it can be inferred that ____________.

    1. A.
      all people have ESP
    2. B.
some women or men have ESP
    3. C.
      children have ESP
    4. D.

Some teenagers think that newspapers are boring and only for adults. But that's not true. There are many interesting stories in the paper. You just need to make clear what you are looking at. “I spend about half an hour reading newspapers every day,” said 15-year-old Gao Ming from Beijing. “I'm interested in things happening at school.” School news is just one kind of news story in newspapers. There's also world news: from international problems to pop stars.
Read the newspaper carefully, we'll find different types of articles on the pages:
News stories — these stories are about events. Reporters try to show all points of a story to help readers understand what happened. Reporters try to speak to as many people as possible. They also use pictures and numbers to show the readers that the stories are true. The newspaper Teenagers has lots of news stories on the news page and front page. When we read them, we learn more about the facts, not the writers’ ideas.
Opinion writing — opinion writing is usually about something happening right now. But it isn't just facts. Here writers add their own opinions to the news. Writers pick only the facts that help back up their ideas. They make readers believe that they are telling the truth. This is usually the kind of story that gets people thinking. Go to “Speak Out” on Page Two for an example of opinion writing in Teenagers.
Advertisement — Don’t get happy too early when you read them. Those sweet words and lovely pictures are just ways to get us interested in their products! People have to pay to put advertisements in newspapers!
