　　Mike was starting the fourth grade in the autumn．He felt that he was old enough to ride a bike to school like other kids．But there were two problems!The first was that he didn't know if his parents would let him ride a bike to school．The second and the bigger of the two problems was that he didn't have a bike, because he and his parents had just moved to the town this summer．

　　Mike started to get over his problems．First, he asked his parents if they would let him ride a bike to school in the autumn．To his surprise, they said,“Sure, Mike, you are old enough, but you don't have a bike!”Mike began to think about how to solve the problem．Finally, he thought of an idea．He asked the neighbors if he could mow(割)their lawns(草坪)to earn money to buy a bike．For all of them needed to mow their lawns, they told Mike that would be fine, if his parents agreed．Mike's parents were pleased that he found a way to buy a bike himself．They agreed and taught Mike how to mow the lawn properly．Finally, he had enough money to buy his bike．He bought a beautiful black and red mountain bike．

　　Earthquakes may happen anywhere on the earth．When some plates of the earth move suddenly, an earthquake happens．Many earthquakes begin under the sea．They often happen near the mountains, too．

　　During an earthquake, the shakings make rocks rise suddenly and even crack(断裂)open．Houses fall, people are killed or hurt, and sometimes the whole villages or cities are destroyed．

　　Can we do something to keep ourselves safe from earthquakes?Scientists have studied earthquakes and make maps that show the“earthquake belts”．In areas in these belts, it’s possible for earthquakes to happen．In these areas we should build strong houses to fight against earthquakes．

　　In the future, scientists will be able to tell when and where an earthquake will be before they happen．They can also tell people what to do and how to do it．

　　Life is not easy, so I’d like to say“When anything happens, believe in yourself．”When I was a young boy, I was so shy that I dare not talk to anyone．My classmates often laughed at me．I was sad but could do nothing．Later, something happened, and it changed my life．It was an English speech contest．My English teacher asked me to take part in it．What a terrible idea!It meant I had to speak before all the teachers and students of my school!

　　An old man was going home late one night with his horse and cart after a day’s hard work．When he was not far from his house, the light on the cart went out．He tried hard but it didn’t work．

　　He was near his home, and so he went along the road without a light．When a policeman saw this, he stopped the old carter．

　　“Where's your light?”asked the policeman．“No one may take a cart along a road at night without a light．You know that．You’ve broken the law．”

　　“I had a light,”said the old man,“but it has just gone out．”

　　The carter quickly took the policeman’s hand and put it down on the top of the light．“The light was still hot and burnt the policeman’s hand．The policeman jumped and he was very angry．

　　Families in different countries are different．Most American families are smaller than the families in other countries．Most American families have one or two parents and two or more children each．

　　Children in the US will leave their parents’ home when they grow up．They usually live far from their parents because they want to find good jobs．They often write to their parents or telephone them．And they often go to visit their parents on holidays．

　　Parents usually let their children choose their own jobs．Americans think it is important for young people to decide on their lives by themselves．

　　Today, the families in China are also small．Most Chinese families have one or two parents．But each family can only have one kid, except the twins．

　　When the kids in China grow up, some of them may live far from their parents because they want to find good jobs, some of them may live with their parents because they don't want to make their parents feel lonely．

　　Some of the parents in China don't let their children choose their own jobs．They choose the jobs for their kids．Most of them think they can give their kids a better future．It's not good for young people．

　　Basketball is a young game．In the year of 1891, a famous college was having some trouble with its boy students．The weather was bad．They couldn’t play outside．So they were unhappy．Sometimes they even got into fights．

　　Finally, some teachers asked Dr．Naisimth to invent a game so that the students might have something to play in doors．

　　Dr．Naisimth thought for a few days and invented a kind of ball game．It was a fast, exciting game with much moving and passing of the ball．It was played between two teams．In order to make a score, the ball had to be thrown into a basket ten feet above the floor on the wall．

　　This story happened four years ago．Tom was seven years old then．He was a good boy．He was one of the best pupils in his class．But he could not get up early．He often slept until nine or ten o’clock in the morning．So he was often late for school．

　　If you knew a bottle of water had been recycled from urine(尿), would you drink it?Astronauts at the International Space Station(ISS)may soon do so．

　　NASA(美国航空航天局)said it would use a high-tech machine(高科技机器)to recycle wastewater at the ISS．The machine will recycle everything from sweat(汗), the water for washing hands, shower water, water used for brushing teeth, and even urine, to make drinking water．

　　It will save NASA millions of dollars each year．At present, each ISS astronaut uses about 4.4 liters(升)of water every day．It costs about ＄24 million a year to transport water up to ISS．NASA says that a liter of water costs about ＄11,000．

　　The machine will be sent to the ISS in October 2008．NASA hopes it will recycle about 93％ of all water used on the station．

　　Will the water be clean?Scientists say the wastewater will go through a very complicated process(复杂的过程)．For example, different chemicals will be put in the wastewater; the water will be heated to 130℃ to get rid of bacteria(细菌)．The recycled water is thousands of times better than the water from a city tap, scientists say．
