　　How many of us have looked up at the stars and wondered about other worlds?Of course，we know a great deal about the universe now but for people living thousands of years ago，the stars were a mystery(神秘的事物)．Astrology(占星术) is one of the world's most ancient (古代的) ideas．It started 3,000 years ago and was used to predict (预言) what would happen to countries and to people in the future．

　　Horoscopes and astrology were developed by the ancient Greeks．They believed that the position(位置) of the sun and the planets could affect a person's life and what would happen to them in the future．Astrology is actually a Greek word that means“science of the stars”．Even famous Greek thinkers like Plato thought astrology was important and he studied it carefully．Later Europeans thought that Plato was a genius so they continued to follow his ideas about the stars．

　　Some people think that farmers started the horoscope to help them decide when to plant and harvest their crops．They needed to know what time of the year it was．For example，Scorpio can only be seen in the evening sky in the summer．Some historians (历史学家) think that many of the myths (神话) associated with star signs were invented to help farmers remember cultures．People who spent their lives moving from one place to another，like the Mongols，used the stars to tell them when and where to go．

　　The Catholic Church(教堂)，which was very powerful a long time ago，told people not to take notice of horoscopes．It was not until the seventeenth century that people were able to freely use the horoscope again．Today many people think the horoscope is just fun but some people take it very seriously．

　　An American diplomat(外交官) living in China decided one day to take a trip out of the city of Beijing with his wife.The diplomat's wife wanted to visit a nearby temple which she had looked up in a tourist guide.

　　After reaching the temple,the diplomat and his wife found that there was no one around at all.The temple seemed to be open,but no ceremonies were taking place at the time.

　　"Since we are here," the diplomat said,"we can at least look around." So the couple took a walk around the temple.While looking at the sculptures(雕塑) in one of the buildings,the diplomat and his wife met a monk.This was the head monk of the temple.After finding out that the diplomat and his wife were Americans,the monk asked the couple if they would do something to help the temple.

　　He asked,"Could you do us a great favour for our future visitors to guide and instruct them?Would you write something in English?" Of course the couple did not have to think over the monk's request.They agreed to help.The couple had to wait for the monk for a few minutes while he ran to find two pieces of wood for the couple to write on.

　　When the monk returned,he said,"Could you write the word 'ladies' on this piece of wood and 'gentlemen' on the other piece?"

　　We have just returned from our holiday.we went with our friends Edward Smith and his wife Tina to the Yorkshire Moors.This is a beautiful place.It is a natural park.There are lots of places to walk on the tops of the hills,miles of grassland with no people,just sheep and birds.

　　Edward,who had just come out of hospital,could not walk as far as he used to.However this meant that we walked in the mornings,and then stopped at a care for lunch,each day,before returning to the place where we lived in.Edward and I slept in front of the fire all afternoon,while the ladies went for another walk.Very pleasant!

　　I have taken lots of photos from the place we lived in,across the valley(峡谷) below us,ot the morning sunrise,and the mist in the valley.Also,in England,the old steam powered trains(蒸汽火车) are very popular.I have taken many photos of the train and from it.

　　Yesterday we had the first snow of this winter.It is very early(We usually expect snow in January).It rained all day,then snowed in the evening.Today We have bright sunshine!
