　　Dinner customs(习惯)are different around the world．If you are a dinner guest(客人)in Ghana, this information will help you a lot．

　　In Ghana dinner is usually from four in the afternoon to six in the evening．But there are no strict rules(严格的规定)about time．Whenever a guest arrives, a family offers food．When you go to a home, the person who receives guests takes you to the living room first．At this time everyone welcomes you．Then you go to the dining room．There you wash your hands in a bowl of water．All the food is on the table．

　　In Ghana you usually eat with your fingers．You eat from the same dish as everyone else．But you eat from one side of the dish only．It is not polite to get food from the other side of the dish．After dinner, you wash your hands again in a bowl of water．

　　Most meals in Ghana have a dish called fufu．People in Ghana make fufu from the powder(粉末)of some plants．Sometimes they cut the fufu with a saw(锯子)because it is very hard, You must chew(咀嚼)fufu well, or you may get sick．You eat fufu with the fingers of your right hand only．

　　Fashions change as time goes．If you look at pictures of people or things from the past, you will see that fashions have always changed．An English house of 1750 was different from one of 1650．A fashionable man in 1780 looked very different from his grandson in 1860．

　　Today fashions change very quickly．Some of this is natural(自然的)．We hear about things much more quickly than in the past．Newspapers, radios, telephones and television send information from one country to another in a few hours．

　　New fashions mean that people will buy new things, so you see there is money in fashion．

　　A good way to pass an exam is to work hard every day．You may not pass an exam if you don't work hard for most time and then work hard only a few days before the exam．

　　I have never taken cooking classes．I learned cooking from my mother because she was really interested in teaching me how to cook．The main reason for this was because when my mother got married, she didn't know how to cook anything, not even an egg．My grandmother never allowed her to stay in the kitchen when she was cooking．

　　My mother did not start to cook until she was 25 years old．In the beginning, it was very hard for her．Therefore, she had to take cooking classes to prepare our meals．After having that experience, she decided to teach me how to cook because she didn't want me to have the same experience．

　　I remember when I was seven years old, and my mother was cooking, I was with her in the kitchen enjoying cooking．I always helped her．Sometimes we prepared meals that my mother already knew how to make, and sometimes we prepared them from recipes．Nowadays, I am really thankful for that experience because I don't need help to cook a meal．I can cook for me alone or for a group of people; it doesn't matter．

　　I will do the same with my children because I don't want them to have the same experience as my mother．If one day I am not with them, I want to be sure that they can carry on their lives without me．

　　A friend of mine named Paul received an expensive car from his brother as a Christmas present．On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin(顽童)was walking around the shining car．“Is this your car, Paul?”he asked．

　　Paul answered,“Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas．”The boy was surprised,“You mean your brother gave it to you and it cost you nothing．Boy, I wish…”He hesitated(犹豫)．

　　Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for．He was going to wish he had a brother like that．But what the boy said surprised Paul greatly．

　　“I wish,”the boy went on,“that I could be a brother like that．”Paul looked at the boy in surprise, then he said again,“Would you like to take a ride in my car?”

　　“Oh, yes, I'd love to．”

　　After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said,“Paul, would you mind driving in front of my house?”

　　Paul smiled a little．He thought he knew what the boy wanted．He wanted to show his neighbours that he could ride home in a big car．But Paul was wrong again．“Will you stop where those two steps are?”the boy asked．

　　He ran up to the steps, then in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast．He was carrying his little crippled(残疾)brother．He sat him down on the step and pointed to the car．

　　“There he is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs．His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn't cost him a cent(美分)．And someday I'm going to give you one just like it then you can see for yourself all the nice things in the Christmas window that I've been trying to tell you about it．”

　　Paul got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car．The shining eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began an unforgettable holiday ride．

　　I wonder if there is any girl or boy who does not like to see a rainbow(彩虹)in the sky．It is so beautiful．

　　There is a story, saying that whenever you see a rainbow you should run at once to the place where it touches the ground, and there you would find a pot of gold．Of course it is not true．Neither you could find the pot of gold, nor would you ever find its end．No matter how far you run, it always seems far away．

　　A rainbow is not a thing which we can feel with our hands as we can feel a flower．It is only the effect(结果)of light shining on raindrops．The raindrops catch the sunlight and break it up into all the wonderful colours which we see．

　　It is called a rainbow perhaps because it is made up of raindrops and looks like a bow(弓)．

　　That is why we can never see a rainbow in a clear sky．We see rainbows only when there is rain in the air and the sun is shining brightly through the clouds．Every rainbow has many colours in the same order．The first or the top colours is always red, next comes orange, then green, and last of all, blue．A rainbow is, indeed one of the wonders of nature．
