Time flies like a bird. As I got older,I became silent and found it hard to start a conversation with my father. The gap between us began to grow. He has done so much for me but I always take it for granted.

Last time our school gave us two days off,and Daddy gave me a ride home on his motorbike. I was tired and fell asleep on his back. Later my mother said he was very happy because it had been a long time since we got close last. Suddenly I felt a little ashamed. I realized that I had ignored (忽略) him a lot during the last few years.

The next day I stayed in bed late and when Daddy tried to wake me up to have breakfast,I pretended that I couldn't hear him. At last he brought a bowl of noodles to my bed,and said, "Come on,dear, have your breakfast and then continue your dream."I got so angry with him for interrupting my sleep that I shouted ," Leave me alone!"

As I said this,I sat up quickly, and the bowl of noodles fell on the floor. Hearing the noise,Mum came in and shouted at me, "What do you think your father is? Who else treats you as well as he does?"

I was shocked and didn't know what to say. Finally I rushed out with tears all over my face. I went to the pool where I used to go fishing with Daddy. A few minutes later,I heard the sound of daddy's motorbike. He was looking for me anxiously, but he didn't notice me as I was sitting behind a tall bush.

I didn't return home until 10 a.m. The moment my parents saw me,they rushed to me. Mum hugged me tightly and daddy looked at me with worry in his eyes. "Are you hungry, dear?" he said at last. Before T could say anything,he had gone off on his motorbike to buy food for me.

I spoke at a middle school in 1995. When it was over, the headmaster asked me if I would visit a special student. An illness had kept him at home. He wanted to meet me,thinking I knew about overcoming (克服) difficulties and going for dreams. I agreed.

During the drive to his home,I knew he was called Matthew,a real fighter. He had a muscle (肌肉) disease. I spent an afternoon talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, "Why me?" He didn't mention how he was made fun of being different;he just talked about his hope for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weights with me.

When we finished talking,I pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming difficulties than I. He looked at it for a moment and handed it back, saying, "Rick, you are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday, when I get to the Olympics and win my gold medal,I will show it to you."

Last summer I heard from Matthew's parents. They wanted me to read a letter he had written to me a few days before his death.

Dear Rick,

I've kept all the letters you wrote to me. I told you someday I was going to the Olympics to win a gold medal. I know now I will never get to do that. But I know I am a champion. When I get to heaven,God will give me my gold medal, and when you get there,I will show it to you.

Thanks for loving me.

The marathon in my town usually takes place in summer every year. My job was to follow behind the runners in an ambulance (救护车) in case any of them needed medical care.

"We're supposed to stay behind the last runner,so drive slowly," I said to the driver,Doug,as we began to move forward.

As they began to pace themselves (控制自己的步速) ,the front runners started to disappear. It was then that my eyes were drawn to the woman in blue silk running shorts and a white T-shirt.

"Doug, look!" We knew we were already watching our " last runner". Her legs were so disabled and bent that it seemed impossible for her to be able to walk properly, let alone (更不用说) a marathon.

Doug and I watched in silence as she slowly moved forward. We didn't say a thing. We would move forward a little bit, then stop and wait for her to gain some distance, then we'd slowly move forward a little bit more. As I watched her struggling (挣扎) to put one toot in front of the other,I found myself hurt and urging her forward. I wanted her to stop, and at the same time,I hoped that she wouldn't.

Finally, she was the only runner left in sight. Tears ran down my face as I watched her with fear, amazement and even respect as she pushed forward with determination through the finish line.

I do not know this woman's name, but that day she became a part of my life―a part I often depend on. For her,it wasn't about beating the other runners or winning a prize;it was about finishing what she had set out to do,no matter what. When I think things are too difficult or too timeconsuming (费时) ,or I get those "I just can't do it",I think of the last runner. Then I realize how easy the task before me really is.

   B. He has learnt never to spend too much time doing one thing.

   C. He has learnt to face any difficulties bravely and overcome them.

   D. He has learnt that disabled people can also do great things.

(   ) 14. How did the writer feel when he watched the woman running in the race?

   A. The woman should have given up the race.

   B. It was not necessary for the woman to take part in the race.

   C. He thought little of the woman.
