The “swim-with-dolphins” tourist industry is becoming more popular every year with the increase of people’s income. After all, it can cost a large amount of money to have this kind of holiday experience. So tour operators try to place eager swimmers as near as possible to the dolphins by trying to predict where the dolphins will be.

Research has shown that while dolphins can move away if they do not want to interact (交流) with human swimmers, they do not like it at all if the swimmers slip into the water directly on top of them or if humans are in their path of travel. However, if swimmers enter the water to one side of them, the dolphins do not avoid the swimmers to the same extent.

In all cases, the dolphins seem to have become more sensitive to the presence of the swimmers. For dolphins, swimming amongst or with humans is not necessarily a high priority. This research has shown that only 19% of any group of dolphins will participate in interaction. Young dolphins are the most likely to interact; they do seem curious about being with humans. It is believed that they see humans as “entertainment” and that the interaction is a new and unusual experience for them.

It is frequently asked whether “swim-with-dolphins” tourism should be discontinued. The advice is that dolphins should be given enough periods of time throughout the day when they are not exposed to tourism. Permitted interactions should not be too disturbing to the dolphins since there could be mothers and calves (幼崽) present in dolphin groups. There should also be educational campaigns about the creatures and what is likely to cause danger to them.

It is not easy to explain to someone that they cannot fulfill their lifelong dreams because the dolphins are resting, or that a mother dolphin and calf are in the area. But if we are to enjoy these remarkable animals and not just use them for our entertainment, then we must carefully monitor the “swim-with-dolphins” industry worldwide.

1.What makes “swim-with-dolphins” tourism popular?

A. The local government’s encouragement.

B. The improvement of people’s living standard.

C. The increasing number of tourists.

D. The high profits of the industry.

2.Why are young dolphins more likely to swim with humans?

A. They do this out of curiosity.

B. They like humans better.

C. They are less sensitive.

D. They prefer new things by nature.

3.What does the author suggest the “swim-with-dolphins” industry do in Paragraph 4?

A. Make people know the hidden threat to dolphins.

B. Strictly limit the expansion of the industry.

C. Avoid interaction with young dolphins.

D. Expose dolphins to tourists only in the daytime.

4.What is the author’s attitude toward “swim-with-dolphins”?

The brain is a remarkable part. It's responsible for thoughts and feelings. Now a new study finds that going through tough times as a kid also can have an impact. The adult brains of people who lived through lots of stress before the age of six—and then became depressed or anxious as teenagers—were different compared with adults who had an easier childhood. It seems that teens changed the shape of their brains by internalizing (使内在化) the stresses experienced years earlier.

Researchers already knew that the shape and size of a child's brain can change in response to lots of stress. They also knew that adults were more likely to be depressed if,as kids, they'd lived in poverty. Some studies showed that these depressed adults had unusual changes in their brain shape. But no one had tested if the early stress and later brain changes were linked.

Scientists in England studied almost 500 boys from birth until the ages of 18 to 21.Sarah Jensen is one of the new study's authors.Almost all of the boys her team studied experienced some hard times as kids. And,she concludes,“This is not necessarily harmful.”To some extent, that's just life. What can be dangerous, she says,is when children experience too many forms of difficulties. Her team's new data suggest that the tougher the childhood, the stronger the impact on the brain might be.

What's happening in the world around us relates to how we feel. Her team linked more childhood stress to more depression.Still, she notes,it's possible that if you find support for anxiety or depression, you might be able to prevent the changes seen here.“If you can change the environment, you can change the course of things,”Sarah says. So,she recommends,if teens develop anxiety or depression,it's good to ask for psychological doctors to give advice.

1.When people had a hard childhood,

A. they will have a brave attitude to life

B. their way of thinking may be strange

C. they will be good at dealing with stress

D. the shape of their brain may be changed

2.What is the breakthrough of the new research?

A. The size of the brain can change.

B. The brain can be influenced by stress.

C. Poverty can affect the brain's shape in future.

D. Changes in brain are connected with earlier hardship.

3.It's a problem when children

A. had a lonely childhood

B. led a peaceful childhood

C. got different kinds of hardship

D. experienced limited hard times

4.For teenagers with anxiety,Sarah suggests .

A. they adapt to their life

B. they seek professional help

C. they talk to friends or relatives

D. they become confident and optimistic

My husband hasn’t stopped laughing about a funny thing that happened to me. It’s funny now but it wasn't at the time.

Last Friday, after doing all the family shopping in town, I wanted a rest before catching the train, so I bought a newspaper and some chocolate and went into the station coffee shop - that was a cheap self-service place with long tables to sit at. I put my heavy bag down on the floor, put the newspaper and chocolate on the table to keep a place, and went to get a cup of coffee.

When I went back with the coffee, there was someone in the next seat. It was one of those wild-looking youngsters, with dark glasses and worn clothes, and hair colored bright red at the front. Not so unusual these days. What did surprise me was that he'd started to eat my chocolate!

Naturally, I was annoyed. However, to avoid trouble--and really I was rather uneasy about him--I just looked down at the front page of the newspaper, tasted my coffee and took a bit of chocolate. The boy looked at me closely. Then he took a second piece of my chocolate. I could hardly believe it. Still I didn't dare to start an argument. When he took a third piece, I felt more angry than uneasy. I thought, “Well, I shall have the last piece.” And I got it.

The boy gave me a strange look, and then stood up. As he left he shouted out. “This woman's crazy!” Everyone stared. That was embarrassing enough, but it was worse when I finished my coffee and got ready to leave. My face went red--as red as his hair--when I realized I'd made a mistake. It wasn’t my chocolate that he’d been taking. There was mine, unopened, just under my newspaper.

1.The woman in the story ________.

A. wanted a newspaper and some chocolate to take home to her family

B. bought some chocolate so that she could keep a place at the table

C. had been very tired and needed some time to recover

D. always went shopping with her family on Fridays

2.When the woman saw the boy go on eating the chocolate, she felt ________.

A. more and more disappointed at losing the chocolate

B. too tired to start an argument

C. too shy to look in the boy’s direction

D. more and more angry with the boy

3.The woman’s face turned red ________.

A. because she realized that she had been quite wrong about the boy

B. because she realized that the boy was poor and angry

C. because she saw everyone staring at her

D. because she hated being shouted at

4.From the story we can see the woman ________.

A. was careless and selfish

B. was being careless

C. often made mistakes

D. was crazy
