Susan Williams went to a boarding school. Here is one of the letters she wrote to her parents from the school.

Dear Mom and Dad,

I’m afraid I have some very bad news for you. I have been very naughty and the school principal(校长)is very angry with me. She is going to write to you. You must come and take me away from here. She does not want me in the school any longer.

The trouble started last night when I was smoking a cigarette in bed. This is against the rules, of course. We are not supposed to smoke at all.

The principal phoned for the fire department. The school is a long way from the town and by the time the fire department arrived, the whole school was in flames. Many of the girls are in the hospital.

The principal says that the fire was all my fault and you must pay for the damage. She will send you a bill for about a million dollars.

I am very sorry about this.

Much love, Susan.

When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city.We lived on a farm, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that city life has its problems, too.

One big disadvantage is money. It costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing.Another disadvantage is pollution.I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of traveling round.Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.

Of course there are advantages.First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment(娱乐活动).Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising——and, what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.

Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are in your teens or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable.I certainly hope to move back there soon.

1.What was the writer always thinking about when he was a child?

A.Staying on the farm.

B.Moving to the countryside.

C.Leaving home for the city.

D.Running away from the school.

2.Which of the following is true about the writer?

A.He is very old now.

B.He is in good health.

C.He prefers driving a car.

D.He lives in the city now.

3.In the passage, the writer tries to __________.

A.express his opinions about way of life

B.describe his life in the countryside

C.an interest in the outside world

D.persuade the reader to live in the city

4.How is the passage mainly developed?

A.By inferring.

B.By comparing.

C.By listing examples.

D.By giving explanations.

We know the famous ones-the Thomas Edisons and the Alexander Graham Bells -but what about the less famous inventors? What about the people who invented the traffic light and the windshield wiper (雨刮器) ? Shouldn' t we know who they are?

Joan Mclean thinks so. In fact, Mclean, a professor of physics at Mountain University in Range, feels so strongly about this matter that she' s developed a course on the topic. In addition to learning "who" invented "what" , however, Mclean also likes her students to learn the answers to the "why" and "how" questions. According to Mclean, "When students learn the answers to these questions, they are better prepared to recognize opportunities for inventing and more motivated to give inventing a try. "

Her students agree. One young man with a patent for an unbreakable umbrella is walking proof of McLean's statement. "If I had not heard the story of the windshield wiper' s invention," said Tommy Lee, a senior physics major. "I never would have dreamed of tuming my bad experience during a rain storm into something so constructive. " Lee is currently negotiating to sell his patent to an umbrella producer.

So, just what is the story behind the windshield wiper? Well, Mary Anderson came up with the idea in 1902 after a visit to New York City. The day was cold and stormy, but Anderson still wanted to see the sights, so she jumped aboard a streetcar. Noticing that the driver was struggling to see through the snow b covering the windshield, she found herself wondering why there couldn' t be a built - in device for cleaning the window. Still wondering about this when she returned home to Birmingham, Alabama, Anderson started drafting out solutions. One of her ideas, a lever (操作杆) on the inside of a vehicle that would control an arm on the outside, became the first windshield wiper.

Today we benefit from countless inventions and innovations. It' s hard to imagine driving without Garrett A. Morgan' s traffic light. It' s equally impossible to picture a world without Katherine J. Blodgett' s innovation that makes glass invisible. Can you picture life without clear windows and eyeglasses?

1.By mentioning "traffic light" and "windshield wiper" , the author indicates that countless inventions are_______.

A. beneficial, because their inventors are famous

B. beneficial, though their inventors are less famous

C. not useful, because their inventors are less famous

D. not useful, though their inventors are famous

2.Professor Joan McLean' s course aims to _____.

A. add color and variety to students' campus life

B. inform students of the windshield wiper' s invention

C. carry out the requirements by Mountain University

D. prepare students to try their own invention

3.Tommy Lee' s invention of the unbreakable umbrella was _

A. not eventually accepted by the umbrella producer

B .inspired by the story behind the windshield wiper

C. due to his dream of being caught in a rainstorm

D. not related to Professor Joan McLean' s lectures

4.Which of the following can best serve as the title of this passage?

A. How to Help Students to Sell Their Inventions to Producers?

B. How to Design a Built -in Device for Cleaning the Window?

C. Shouldn't We Know Who Invented the Windshield Wiper?

D. Shouldn' t We Develop Invention Courses in Universities?
