    17．On April 14th，2010，my entire life changed in an instant．One moment I was joyfully riding through the sunshine．The next moment，metal，flesh and bone were spreading against the pavement in a thunderous crash．Another cyclist，biking carelessly，had cut me off and sent me supermanning toward oncoming traffic．
    As if to symbolize the accident that had hit my life，another disaster also occurred on April 14th，2010．It cost the airline industry＄l.7billion．Ten million travelers were stuck for days．Economies all over the world were disturbed．This was the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull，one of Iceland's many volcanoes．
    However，volcanoes are not all bad．In fact，they are necessary．They are responsible for the birth of new earth，and for the creation of rich soil．This eruption gave off 0.15 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere daily．But cancelling 48% of the worlds flight travel saved about 2.8 million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere，temporarily decreasing our carbon footprint．
    Similarly，the accident had badly affected my emotion but it also allowed me to look more closely inside myself and discover things about myself I never would have realized．I learned how not to judge myself for my new limitations．
    In 1973，another Icelandic volcano，Eldfell，broke out．Icelanders decided to bomb it with cold water until it froze and chose a different path．After their plan worked，they used the geothermal （地热） energy for the next 15years to heat their homes．A good example of life bringing lemons，and making lemonade!One must move on from misfortunes，focusing only on the present moment and being hopeful for the future．
    I ran from April 14th，2010，to every kind of escape．Eventually I ended up in university for a new-found love in Earth sciences．

    Today's instant electronic memos-such as texting and Facebook and Twitter messages-are more direct，more concentrated，more efficient．They go without the salutation （称呼语） and the signoff （签收）； we already know the"to"and"from．"Many corporations are moving to messaging networks for exactly that reason：more signal，less noise and less time．This trend is further evidence that store-and-forward systems such as e-mail and voicemail are outdated．Instead of my leaving you a lengthy message that you pick up later，I can now send you an easily-read message that you can read-and respond to-on the go．
    The coming of the mobile era is responsible for the decline of e-mail．Instant written messages bring great convince to people．They can deal with them at about any time：before a movie，in a taxi，waiting for lunch．And because these messages are very brief，they're suitable for smart phone typing．
    Does this mean e-mail is on its way to the dustbin of digital history？Not necessarily．E-mail still has certain advantages．On the other hand，tweets and texts feel ephemeral-you read them，then they're gone，into an endless string，e-mail still feels like something you have and that you can file，search and return to later．It's easy to imagine that it will continue to feel more appropriate for formal communications：agreements，important news，longer explanations．
    So，e-mail won't go away completely．Remember，we've been through a transition （过度） like this not so long ago：when e-mail was on the rise，people said that postal mail was dead．That's not how it works．Postal mail found its smaller market，and so will e-mail．New technology rarely replaces old one completely； it just adds new alternatives．

    2．Augusto Esquivel is a sculptor who，in his own words，is"crazy with comparisons of reality and potential and the balance between them．"Perhaps the best example of what he's talking about are his most famous creations：the suspended（悬挂的） button sculptures．
    Made entirely from buttons hanging on various lengths of string，Esquivel's sculptures are made to look like common objects：a piano，a gumball machine，and even a toilet．If it wasn't for the clear string hanging above，these objects，these sculptures，would look solid，yet you can put your hands right through them．The process starts with him deciding on a subject and setting the acrylic （丙烯酸树脂）from where the buttons are being suspended．He buys buttons of different shapes and sizes，paints them with spray paint，and carefully hangs them．After that，it's a manner of hanging each individual button，which takes a lot of time．For his piano，for example，he individually hung over 60 pounds worth of tiny buttons．
    Esquivel's sculptures，while mostly housed inside art galleries，perfectly capture one of the main principles of street art：something that is eye-catching and something that invites interaction．Often the best sculptures outside the art galleries aren't the ones behind guards and fencing，but the ones people can go right up to and touch．In Vancouver，a series of laughing old men are attracting people for pictures and to just generally hang around，but the people who simply walk by and see the sculptures almost always leave with a smile on their face．That's good street art：it draws the viewer in rather than relying on a gallery to draw in an audience and point them to certain pieces．
    Esquivel's art is not only a presentation of talent，something that mentions larger philosophical questions，like the ones he stated above，but also just the right combination of interesting idea and painstaking work．One can look at his work in a critical way，or simply appreciate his idea and execution（艺术品的制作）．
