    5．When giving a lecture，a professor showed a slide of the structure diagrams of two kinds of materials．He asked the students sitting before him under the platform，"Can you tell any differences between the two diagrams？"As the diagrams were very much alike，the students distinguished them with quite an effort．Then the professor said，"Since you have found out the difference，I'd better tell you，the one is so-called‘ice'（冰毒），and the other is ephedrine（麻黄）．"
    The latter is a sort of Chinese medicine，effective to cure several diseases，such as cold and asthma．The former，however，is a deadly poison able to destroy life．Hardly could one expect the latter is the origin  of the former．They have very little difference so far as molecular（分子） structure is concerned，but they are poles apart when it comes to their functions．The fact is：between medicine and poison the boundary is very vague；so is the boundary of humanity．In the same ability as chemists，some devote themselves to the study of medicine to save people，while some others are engaged in poison-making，endangering mankind．
    Later I got to know all medical products are sort of poison；in fact there is no strict boundary between them．What matters is quantity．If the quantity is suitable for the disease it is medicine； otherwise it becomes poison．To develop the proper dose，no matter how little it is，will turn a lifesaving medicine into a fatal poison．Such a little difference is the boundary that separates medicine from poison．
    This is also true for many things in the world．The boundary between undoubtfully opposite things is often vague，for example，evil（邪恶） and goodness，an idea in your brain may push you from goodness to evil and lead you to make a wrong step in life that brings about forever regret．The one who sees clearly the difference and makes the correct decision is a true wise man．

    As you might expect，the Institute of Medicine says people need to drink more water when they are physically active．The same is true of those who live in hot climates．Depending on heat and activity，people could need two times as much water as others do．All this，however，does not answer one question．No one seems sure why people have the idea that good health requires eight glasses of water daily．
    It may have started with a misunderstanding．In 1945，the National Academy of Sciences published some guidelines．Its Food and Nutrition Board（营养膳食） said a good amount of water for most adults was 2.5liters daily．This was based on an average of one milliliter（毫升）for each calorie of food eaten．But that was only part of what the board said．It also said that most of this amount is contained in prepared foods．
