3.For thousands of years,the most important two buildings in any British village have been the church and the pub.In fact,until a place has a church and a pub,it isn't really considered a community worthy of a name.Traditionally,the church and the pub are at the heart of any village or town,since it is where people gather to give and receive news.In fact,the word‘pub'is short for public house.
That's how it used to be,but things are beginning to change.It is said that the credit decline is causing 39British pubs a week to go out of business.People don't have lots of spare money to spend on beer.Recently,the UK government banned smoking in all pubs,and that may also have affected the number of customers going to pubs.
This decline is happening despite the fact that in recent years the UK government has started to allow pubs to stay open after 11p.m.Previously,with 11p.m.as closing time,customers would have to drink quite quickly,meaning they sometimes got more drunk than they would if allowed to drink slowly.The British habit of drinking a lot very quickly is known as"binge drinking",and it causes some long-term health problems for people and problems with violent crime for communities.The UK government is changing the law to discourage binge drinking,and regularly spends money on television advertisements to warn people of the problems of drinking too much.
In order to save their businesses,pubs are trying to change with the market.Now,there are a number of different types of pubs.
As you can see,British pubs now offer something for everyone.A lot of pubs used to be
working men's clubs,meaning that women could not usually enter.Today,however,women can freely enter 99% of pubs without experiencing any problems.Perhaps things are changing for the better after all.

13.Hundreds of years ago,a Roman army came north from England to make war on Scotland. The Scots,a brave people, loved their country very much. They fought hard to drive the enemy out of Scotland, but there were too many Romans. It looked as if the Romans would win.
One night, the leader of Scots marched his soldiers to the top of a hill."We will rest here tonight,my men,"he said."Tomorrow we will fight one more battle. We must win or we will die."
They were all very tired,so they ate their supper quickly and fell asleep. There were four guards on duty, but they, too, were very tired, and one by one, also fell asleep.
The Romans were not asleep.Quickly they gathered at the foot of the hill.Slowly they climbed up the hillside, taking care not to make a sound.Closer and closer they came to the sleeping Scots. They were almost at the top.A few minutes more, the war would be over.Suddenly, one of them put his foot on a thistle(蓟).He cried out and his sudden cry woke the Scots. In a moment, they were on their feet and ready for battle. The fighting was hard but it did not last long. The Scots wiped out the Romans and saved their country.

20.Selfie is a photograph taken of oneself,typically with a smartphone or webcam (网络摄像头) and uploaded to a social media website.
In the digital age,selfies have taken off in a way that no one could have predicted.The art of the selfie is one that lots of people have practiced and perfected in recent years.A recent study shows 91percent of teens have posted a photo of themselves online.Some celebrities (名人) are regular selfie posters,too.It seems that selfies are more than just a trend.They are here to stay.
Why are selfies so popular?The appeal of selfies comes from how easy they are to create and share.And posting selfies is popular for another reason:you can control your own image."I like having the power to choose how I look,"admits Samantha,a 19-year-old girl from Missouri,"even if I'm making a face."Actually,the most common selfie is the one where you look cute,partly because it's a quick way to get positive comments about your appearance."If I feel pretty,I take one,"says Andrew,a 23-year-old girl from Maryland,"when other people Like (点赞) it,it's a mini boost of confidence."
Sure,showing off a new coat or that you're at a cool event is fun,but can be a trap to fall in.There's a danger that your self-respect may start to be tied to the comments and likes you get when you post a selfie,and they aren't based on who you are---they are based on what you look like.Seeking validation (认可) is totally normal,and it's a healthy way for teenagers to develop their identity.But with social networks,where it's easy to get quick approval almost constantly,the selfie thing can quickly go out of control.It may even start to feel like an addiction:when you get a"LIKE",you're up.But when you get nothing,your confidence can decrease quickly.
Overall,opinions vary on selfie culture.It's up to you to shape the future of the habit.Ask yourself:are my selfies for fun,or do I need the comments?If you belong to the latter,it's recommended that you change your view.That could mean cutting selfies out entirely or just cutting down and making them more fun.So maybe you like to travel,or read or dance,or create crazy 3-D nail art…post them!Take it from us:it's so much more interesting.

28.By saying"They are here to stay",the writer believesB.
A.celebrities will continue to post selfies
B.selfies are taking root in people's life
C.people will be addicted to posting selfies
D.selfies have raised wide public concern
29.People enjoy posting selfies partly becauseC.
A.it is a way to show off their high-technique
B.celebrities have set good examples to them
C.they can control how they present themselves
D.selfies are followed by comments and likes
30.Paragraph 4mainly talks aboutA of posting selfies online.
A.the negative effects
B.the growing trend

D.the possible causes
31.The writer may think it better for people to selfie forD.
