My friend Tom came across an accident when driving in darkness. His legs were so hurt that he couldn’t move. What was was that he found himself unable to ask for help—his mobile phone went out of as a result of exhausted battery. Nothing could be done but in the cold wilderness. It was 8 hours later that day broke and then the of the rescue team.

It is almost that he could stand the horror in the darkness for so long. Even more surprising was his . “First of all I checked my conditions and found myself not in danger. As there was no to call for help, I leaned(斜靠)back in my seat trying my best to keep the wound from . In this way I dozed(打盹)off.”

His story put an end to my regret for the of an exploration that happened last year. A group of young men to explore a mountain cave and got lost. to find a way out in the dark cave they were frightened and ran anxiously without a sense of . Finally, they fell dead in fear and exhaustion. According to the team that found them, the place where they got lost was only about 10 meters away from the of the cave. If they stayed on the spot when they lost their way and tried to themselves, they would probably have sensed a faint light glowing(发出) not far away.

Don’t you think that you can compare it with itself? When you meet with difficulties in life, you are lost in darkness. Focus that it’s unclear to you yet and you needn’t put up struggle . It seems to be a negative attitude, a person who can do so must have foresight as well as a great in the first place.

English is an important global language, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to learn. Many experts have tried to make English easier for students to learn―but they weren’t always successful.

In 1930, Professor CK Ogden of Cambridge University invented Basic English. It had only 850 words (and just eighteen verbs) and Ogden said most people could learn it in just thirty hours. The problem was that people who learned Basic English could write and say simple messages, but they couldn’t understand the answers in “real” English! It was also impossible to explain a word if it wasn’t in the Basic English word list. For example, if you wanted a watermelon, you asked for “a large green fruit with the form of an egg, which has a sweet red inside and a good taste”!

RE Zachrisson, a university professor in Sweden, decided that the biggest problem for learners of English was spelling, so he invented a language called Anglic. Anglic was similar to English, but with much simpler spelling. “Father” became “faadher”, “new” became “nue’ and “years” became “yeerz”. Unfortunately for some students of English, Anglic never became popular.

Even easier is the language which ships’ captains use: it’s called “Seaspeak”. Seaspeak uses a few simple phrases for every possible situation. In Seaspeak, for example, you don’t say, “I’m sorry what did you say?” or “I didn’t understand, can you repeat that?” It’s just “Say again.” No more grammar!

In the age of international communication through the Internet who knows? ... a new form of English might appear. A large number of the world’s e-mails are in English and include examples of “NetLingo” like OIC (Oh, I see) and TTYL (Talk to you later). In another fifty years, English might not exist ... we will probably all speak fluent Internetish!

1.The best title for the passage would be ______.

A. Seaspeak B. Basic English

C. Internetish D. Easy English

2.It will take a person about ______ weeks to learn Basic English if he spends two hours

learning it every day.

A. six B. four C. two D. three

3.According to Professor Zachrisson, what was the biggest problem for learners of English?

A. Grammar. B. Vocabulary.

C. Speaking. D. Spelling.

4.Which of the following is likely to be Anglic?

A. IOU B. A graet batl.

C. Long time no see. D. Two five, no lights.

5.What might happen to English in another fifty years?

A. It might be replaced by Internetish.

B. It might become a global language.

C. It might take the place of all other languages.

D. It might become more and more difficult.

Dear Friend,

The recent success of children's books has made the general public aware that there's a huge market out there.

And there's a growing need for new writers trained to create the $3 billion worth of children's books bought each year ... plus stories and articles needed by over 650 publishers of magazines for children and teenagers.

Who are these needed writers? They're ordinary folks like you and me.

But am I good enough?

I was once where you might be now. My thoughts of writing had been pushed down by self-doubt, and I didn't know where to turn for help.

Then, I accepted a free offer from the Institute to test my writing aptitude(潜能),and it turned out to be the inspiration I needed.

The promise that paid off

The Institute made the same promise to me that they will make to you, if you show basic writing ability:

You will complete at least one manuscript(手稿) suitable to hand in to a publisher by the time you finish our course.

I really didn't expect any publication before I finished the course, but that happened. I sold three stories. And I soon discovered that was not unusual at the Institute.

Since graduation, I have authored 34 nationally published children's books and over 300 stories and articles.

Free test and brochure

We offer a free aptitude test and will send you a copy of our brochure describing our recognized home-study courses on the basis of one-on-one training.

Realize your writing dream today. There's nothing sadder than a dream delayed until it fades forever.

Sincerely,

Kristi

科目:高中英语 来源:2015届山西省高二下期中英语试卷(解析版) 题型:阅读理解

When women sit together to watch a movie on TV, they usually talk simultaneously(同时地) about a variety of subjects, including children, men, careers and what’s happening in their lives. When groups of men and women watch a movie together, the men usually end up telling the women to shut up. Men can either talk or watch the screen—they can’t do both—and they don’t understand that women can. Besides, women consider that the point of all getting together is to have a good time and develop relationships—not just to sit there like couch potatoes staring at the screen.

During the ad breaks, a man often asks a woman to explain the plot and tell him where the relationship between the characters is going. He is unable, unlike women, to read the subtle body language signals that reveal how the characters are feeling emotionally. Since women originally spent their days with the other women and children in the group, they developed the ability to communicate successfully in order to maintain relationships. For a woman, speech continues to have such a clear purpose: to build relationships and make friends. For men, to talk is to relate the facts.

Men see the telephone as a communication tool for sending facts and information to other people, but a woman sees it as a means of bonding(连接). A woman can spend two weeks on vacation with her girlfriend and, when she returns home, telephone the same girlfriend and talk for another two hours.

There is no convincing evidence that social conditioning, the fact that girls’ mothers talked to them more, is the reason why girls talk more than boys. Psychiatrist Dr Michael Lewis, author of Social Behaviour and Language Acquisition, conducted experiments that found mothers talked to, and looked at, baby girls more often than baby boys. Scientific evidence shows parents respond to the brains of their children. Since a girl’s brain is better organized to send and receive speech, we therefore talk to them more. Consequently, mothers who try to talk to their sons are usually disappointed to receive only short grunts(哼哼声) in reply.

1.While watching TV with others, women usually talk a lot because they .

A. are afraid of awkward silence with their families and friends

B. can both talk and watch the screen at the same time

C. think they can have a good time and develop relationships

D. have to explain the plot and body language to their husbands

2.After a vacation with her girlfriend, a woman would talk to her again on the phone for hours in order to .

A. experience the happy time again

B. keep a close tie with her

C. recommend her a new scenic spot

D. remind her of something forgotten

3.What does the author want to tell us most?

A. Women’s brains are better organized for language and communication.

B. Women love to talk because they are more sociable than men.

C. Men do not like talking because they rely more on facts.

D. Social conditioning is not the reason why women love talking.

4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. Women are Socially Trained to Talk

B. Talking Maintains Relationships

C. Women Love to Talk

D. Men Talk Differently from Women

Starting a new school term is always exciting. It is a chance to see all of your friends again. But most exciting of all, the new term is an opportunity to take up new hobbies. As you know, it is common in Britain for students to take up new hobbies after the Christmas holidays. Promising to begin something new is a common New Year resolution for many school teenagers.

Most schools offer different kinds of hobby classes. Students take them in their free periods or after school. Some classes you have to pay for and others are free of charge. For example, I once took a free Wednesday evening gymnastics class that my school offered. But when I learnt how to play the drum my parents had to pay for the lesson, and they did so, like most parents, without any complaint.

The most popular extra classes at my school were piano lessons and drama club: Both classes offered exams students could take. Because the extra classes may take up much time of the students, students with many hobbies sometimes felt more stressed than those without any. But they could enjoy their life better than those who didn't foster (培养) any hobbies at school. For example, they could build up good friendship with the persons who shared the common interest with them. Most important of all, the students with hobbies left school with many extra skills.

Frankly speaking, I haven't continued any of the hobbies I began at school. But I have never regretted taking them. After all, my best friend today is someone whom I met in my gymnastics class. The reason why we are still keeping in close touch with each other is that we have much in common.

1.The first paragraph suggests that it's children's nature .

A. to value friendship

B. to make a promise easily

C. to copy others' behavior

D. to be curious about the new

2.The author's parents' attitude to hobby classes might be that of .

A. approval B. doubt C. unconcern D. disapproval

3.What is the biggest benefit children can get from taking up a new hobby?

A. They can enjoy a good time.

B. They can learn extra skills.

C. They can make more friends.

D. They will have things to share.

4.From the author's experience, we can learn that .

A. free hobby classes are very popular

B. hobbies are a way of making friends

C. we must be careful when choosing a hobby

D. hobby classes may not last a long time

5.What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To introduce some hobby classes at school.

B. To tell readers how to choose hobby classes.

C. To encourage readers to take up new hobbies.

D. To report a trend among British school children.
