19.When Frank and I stepped through the post office doors,there was a crowd gathered,gawking at the new fixture on the wall like a chorus of wide-mouthed frogs.I had to get closer,and that was where being a girl that's scrawnier than a wire fence came in handy.Fortunately,Frank,my twin of eleven years,was just the same.
"Come on."I said,grabbing his hand,and we slid through the cracks between people until we spilled out in front.
Finally I got a good look.It was fixed to the plaster next to the postmaster's window,the place of honor usually reserved for the Wanted posters.Beady-eyed Zedekiah Smith,the bank robber,still hung there,but even he had been pushed aside for something more important.
A telephone.The first one in town.
"How's it work?"Noah Crawford called out.Noah's the best fix-it man around,and I could tell he was itching to get his fingers on those shiny knobs.
"Don't rightly know,"answered the postmaster,and he tugged at his goatee as if it might tell him."I do know the sound of your voice moves along wires strung on poles.It's sort of like the telegraph,only you hear words instead of dots and dashes."
"Ah,"the crowd murmured, and I felt my own mouth move along.
I gazed at that gleaming wood box and something happened inside me.Something-I can only guess-that might be like falling in love.The thought of talking into that box-of making my voice sail through wires in the sky-it took over my brain.I couldn't get it out.
"Frank,"I whispered to my twin."I have to use that telephone."
Five minutes later,Frank towed me up Main Street,toward home."Liza-"he began,but I cut him off.We two thought so much alike,I had Frank's questions answered before he even asked.

13.There is a popular saying in the English language:Sticks and stones may break my bones,but words will never hurt me."Well,that is not true.Unkind words,name-calling or even the so-called"the silent tretment"can hurt children as much as being physically hit,sometimes even more so.
A recent study of middle school children showed that verbal(言语的)abuse by other children can harm development in the brain.The study was a project of researchers at Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts.Researcher Martin Teicher and his team studied young dults,aged 18to 25.These young men and women h ad not ever been treated in a cruel or violent way by their parents.The researchers asked the young people to rate their childhood exposure to verbal abuse from both parents and other children.Then the researchers performed imaging tests on the brains of the subjects.
The images showed that the people who reported suffering verbal abuse from peers in middle school had underdeveloped connections between the left and right side of he brain.The two sides of the brain are connected by a large bundle of connecting fibers called the corpus callosum(胼胝体,胼胝体,脑胼胝体).This was the area that was underdeveloped.
The middle school years are a time when these brain connections are developing.So,unkind,hurtful comments from children or adults during this period have the greatest effect.The researchers tested the mental and emotional condition of all the young people in the study.The tests showed that this same group of people had higher levels of fear,depression,anger and drug abuse than others in the study.
The researchers published their findings online o the American Journal of Psychiatry's website.
Parents cannot control what other people say to their children, but they can prepare their children.

25.Why does the author use the popular saying at the beginning?B
A.To show the power of words.
B.To introduce an opposite view.
C.To prove the author's argument.
D.To show ancient people's wisdom
26.What did the subjects have in common?D
A.They were hurt by unkind words.
B.They performed poorly in imaging tests.
C.They had their brain slightly damaged.
D.They experienced no physical abuse at home.
27.What will be discussed in the next paragraph?C
A.Comments on the findings.

14.Living an adventurous lifeNearly ten years ago,I was told that I had a brain tumor (瘤),and this experience changed my attitude about adventure forever.I thought that I was going to die and that all my adventures were over.I did not have a brain tumor,it turned out,but rather multiple sclerosis (多发性硬化),which meant that, although they were not over, the nature of my adventures could have to change.
Each morning that I wake up is a fresh event, something that I might not have had. Each gesture that I make carries the weight of uncertainty and demands significant attention; buttoning my shirt, changing a light bulb, walking down stairs.I might not be able to do it this time.If I could not delight in them, they would likely drown me in anger and in self-pity.
I admire the grand adventures of others.I read about them with interest. With Peter Matthiessen I have hiked across the Himalayas to the Crystal Mountain.I have walked with Annie Dillard up,down, into, and across Tinker Creek in all seasons.David Bain has gone with me along 110 miles of Philippine coast, and Ed Abbey has rowed me down the Colorado River,I enjoy the adventures of these courageous figures, who can strike out on difficult trips-2 miles,250 miles,3000 miles-ready to bear cold and tiredness-indeed not just to bear but to celebrate.
But as for me,I can no longer walk very far from the armchair in which I read. Some days I don't even make it to the backyard. And yet I'm unwilling to give up the adventurous life; the difficulty of it,even the pain, the an xiety and fear, and the sudden brief lift of spirit that makes a hard journey more attractive.
I refine adventure, make it smaller and smaller. And now, whether I am moving on my hands and knees across the dining room to help my cat, lying wide-eyed in the dark battling another period of sadness, gathering flowers from the garden, meeting a friend for lunch,I am always having the adventures that are mine to have.
