The best thing you can say about the roofs of most city buildings is that you don’t have to look at them much. That’s very good, since and urban landscape viewed from above can be and unlovely thing-block after block of tarred(铺有沥青的)black rooftops, sticky in summer, windswept in winter, ugly year-round. Or at least that’s the way it used to be.

But urban roofs are going green. Environmental designers have begun to realize that the tops of buildings don’t have to be wastelands. Indeed, they can be gardens, planted with grasses, flowers and bushes.

A planted roof usually comes in one of two varieties: extensive or intensive. The extensive type is wide and shallow, with a soil depth of less than 8 inches, able to support smaller plants, The intensive type may be smaller, but it’s relatively deeper and home to larger plants.

Whatever the design, green roofs are not so simple as ordinary gardens. They have multiple layers beneath the soil, including a drainage layer, waterproofing, structural support, and so on .

But this system can do a great deal of good. A recent paper in the journal BioScience tells that green roofs can control temperature, contain water and clean the air. And most impressively, they can cut heat loss from a building by 50%, lower air-conditioning costs by 25%, and reduce the urban-heated-island effect by 2℃.

Of course, apart from the square feet greened and heat reduced, green roofs are even more valued since people can gain some psychological comfort simply by having a quiet place to go. As so often happens, what’s good for the planet can also be good for the spirit.

There are various reasons why cancers appear to be on the increase. For one thing, though their sufferers are to be found in all age groups, cancers are particularly likely to attack persons in their middle and advanced years. Naturally, since people live longer these years, there are more cancer sufferers than before. Again, with better methods of diagnosis (诊断), doctors can more easily recog??nize cancerous growths that would formerly have passed unnoticed or that would have been wrongly di??agnosed. It is also believed that certain habits and conditions of modem living, including heavy smok??ing and the pollution of the air, may leave people living in more cancer-causing conditions than before.

We all look forward to the day when a simple medical test can find cancer while it is still small. Researchers around the world are working on such a test. Most of their work deals with the examina??tion of the blood.

Researchers in Boston have found something in the blood of cancer patients that does not appear in healthy persons. The test showed which persons had cancer and which did not. It was correct more than 90 percent of the time.

The researchers believe the test may be able to show cancer very clearly in its development. Cancers discovered early usually can be treated successfully.

The test examines very small bits of fat in the blood called lipids (脂质). Cancers seem to change lipids although doctors do not know why. The test showed differences between the lipids of the persons with cancer and the lipids of those without cancer.

The researchers say the new test could be a step to develop a simple way to check patients for cancer before the disease shows on an X-ray.

. Who will fail cancer from the study of the researchers?

A. The young.                           B. The middle age and the older.

C. The man.                               D. The woman.

B. the test that may be able to show cancer very early in its development,.

C. a simple medical test that cannot find cancer when it is -small

D. a new test that could be a step to develop a difficult way

B. People living in better conditions are most likely to be attacked by cancer.

C.X-raying is the best way to determined whether a person has cancer or not.

SECTION B

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and the required words limit. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

Fast food and too much TV time should not take all the blame for the weight problems. A group of researchers say that a number of aspects of modern living from lack of sleep to environmental chemicals and to living with air conditioning ——may be closely related to the weight problems of many people.

Lack of sleep is one of factors. Research in animals and humans suggest that a lack of sleep over a long time can increase appetite. Studies also show that many adults and children are sleeping less than they used to. In recent decades, adults have gone from sleeping for all average of nine hours to about seven hours.

There is also evidence that industrial chemicals may increase body fat. These chemicals, which are used in products, change hormonal activity when they get into the body. Studies suggest that people have been getting more and more of these chemicals through the food chain in recent decades.

Another factor that may be making people overweight is air conditioning . The body burns calories when forced to eat less in hot and wet weather, but air conditioning makes it unnecessary for the body to make any adjustment.

Researchers also list other possible risk factors for overweight , including more older mothers, whose children may become overweight more easily; a number of medicines which can lead to weight gain ; and fewer people who smoke, since people often gain weight when they stop smoking because nicotine can make people eat less.

No one is suggesting that people should stop working and sleep more, or keep smoking. When it comes to any person's weight, what really matters is how much they eat and how much of the food they use every day. That means diet and exercise are still the key.

“Everybody in this city wants a car, and I’m no exception. A car brings with it the freedom to travel”, said a friend of mine while reading a car magazine. I might not agree with him, but no doubt he was speaking for a rapidly growing number of middle-class Chinese. While it is true that all the waiting, walking, being part of a crowd, and sweating, are somewhat unpleasant, there are many problems which can arise when our lives rely too much on this invention.

First of all, in terms of polluting the environment, driving a car is the worst act an average person can commit. Beijing now finds itself at the top of the list of the most polluted capital cities in the world with Mexico City in the second place. Research also shows that by 2010 around 90% of total pollutants in Shanghai have come from cars. These pollutions are extremely dangerous to our health. They can damage the lungs, cause cancer, and damage the brain.

Apart from environmental problems, relying too much on cars also creates social problems such as traffic jams, road accidents, and noise pollution. The jeeps that proudly drive through the Hutongs in Beijing as if they are in a race often annoy me, and to make it worse, these drivers seldom respect cyclists.

Of course, we cannot forget the convenience that cars bring us when we need to travel far, but I often find it faster to cycle from one place to another within the city of Beijing, especially with the growing traffic jams.

Since people travel further and more frequently than before, cars will certainly be important in the future. At the same time, however, let us work hard to make sure that this invention brings us a more convenient lifestyle rather than trouble and disease. Let us make good use of cars.

1.What is this passage mainly about?

   A. Environmental problems.

   B. Traffic jams in Beijing.

   C. Problems brought about by cars.

   D. Benefits of using cars.

2. The underlined word commit in Paragraph 2 has the close meaning as ____ .

   A. do something right or legal

   B. do something wrong or illegal

   C. do something good and meaningful

   D. do something bad and meaningless

3.What do we know about the author?

   A. The author doesn’t want a car.

   B. The author agrees that a car offers freedom to travel.

   C. The author suggests that we should rely on bicycles.

   D. The author thinks that the invention of cars leads to many problems.

4.In Paragraph 3, what does the author mean by saying “The jeeps… often annoy me”?

   A. The author is troubled by the way jeeps are driven in the Hutongs of Beijing.

   B. The author thinks that Hutongs are too narrow for jeeps to drive through.

   C. The author thinks that the jeeps are too noisy.

   D. The author is worried that more accidents are caused by jeeps than any other cars.

5.What is the author’s idea in Paragraphs 4 and 5 ?

   A. Cars are only convenient for people traveling far.

   B. We should all give up cars and ride bicycles.

   C. Cars have brought us more convenience than troubles.

   D. We should choose between the car and the bicycle according to the situation.
