16.Could your cellphone give you cancer?Whether it could or not,some people are worrying about the possibility that phones,power lines and wi-fi could be responsible for a range of illnesses,from rashes to brain tumors.
Some say there is evidence to support the growing anxieties.David Carpenter,a professor of environmental health sciences at the university at Albany,in New York,thinks there's a greater than 95percent chance that power lines can cause childhood leukemia (白血病).Also there's a greater than 90percent chance that cellphones can cause brain tumors."It's apparent now that there's a real risk,"said Carpenter.
But others believe these concerns are unjustified.Dr Martha Linet,the head of radiation epidemiology(流行病学) at the US National Cancer Institute,has looked at the same research as Carpenter but has reached a different conclusion."I don't support warning labels for cellphones,"said Linet."We don't have the evidence that there's much danger."
Studies so far suggest a weak connection between EMFs (电磁场) and illness-so weak that it might not exist at all.A multinational investigation of cellphones and brain cancer,in 13countries outside the US,has been underway for several years.It's funded in part by the European Union,in part by a cellphone industry group.The final report should come out later this year,but data so far don't suggest a strong link between cellphone use and cancer risk.

12.From the passage we can learn that some people are worried becauseC.
A.they have evidence that the use of cellphones can lead to cancer

A.the worrying is unnecessary
B.cancer-warning labels should be on cellphones
C.there is a link between cellphones and cancer
D.cellphones have nothing to do with cancer
14.Which of the following best describes the attitude of the author towards the debate?B

7.There is a problem discussed by people about whether parents should hit their children?Or should they ever beat them?
Research suggests many of us are likely to respond"no",and public support for spanking(打屁股)has been falling over the years. But surveys also show that 75 percent to nearly 90 percent of parents admit to spanking their child at least once.
I was raised in a zero-tolerance home for disrespect, and my parents often turned to physical punishment. And,no,I don't feel I was damaged by it.
Nothing is more annoying than watching ill-mannered behavior from children.
But there is data to suggest that a return to old-school spanking isn't the answer.
Two years ago,Newsweek reported that it had found data suggesting that teens whose parents u sed physical punishment were more likely to become aggressive.
Murray Straus, professor at the University of New Hampshire in America, has studied the topic of children and spanking for decades. He said that children who were physically punished have lower IQs than their peers. It may be that children with lower IQs were more likely to get spanked, but the punishment may have been counterproductive(反作用的)to their mental development,as well.
Some researchers make the argument that occasional open-handed smacks(用巴掌打)on the bottom are not only harmless but can have some benefit.
Last year,Marjorie Gunnoe,a psychologist at Calvin College, studied teens who have never been spanked. There are a greater number of children growing up without ever having been physically punished.Gunnoe's research suggests they don't turn out any better than those who were sometimes spanked.
There are some parents who simply cannot control their tempers(脾气).But I still believe that the best parents are the ones who are able to offer fair and firm discipline without ever turning to physical punishment.

29.According to the first three paragraphs, the author was probably hit by her parents whenC.
A.they were dissatisfied with her grade
B.they cannot control their temper
C.she showed no respect for the elder
D.their discipline turns out to be not strict enough
30.According to Murray Straus, children who are physically punishedB.
A.are less aggressive toward others when they get older
B.may develop lower IQs than their peers
C.benefit from occasional spanking
D.have slower physical development
31.The author seems to agree thatA.
A.good parents discipline their children in a fair and reasonable way
B.children who have been spanked tend to behave better than those who haven't
C.physical punishment should be the last resort (手段)of any parent
D.parents should determine whether a child needs to be smacked or not.

4.For centuries,the body's blood has been linked closely with the emotions.People who show no human emotions or feelings,are said to be cold-blooded killer.For example,the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer.He seems to kill for no reason,and no emotion,as if taking someone's life as nothing.
Cold can affect other parts of the body.The expression"get cold feet"has nothing to do with cold or your feet.The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do.For example,you agree to be president of an organization.But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned,and all the work of the organizations will be your responsibility.You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you understand the situation.
The expression"give someone the cold shoulder"probably comes from the physical act of turning your back toward someone instead of speaking to him face to face.You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you.Or,to someone who has lied about you to others.
A cold fish is not a fish.It is a person.But it is a person who is unfriendly,unemotional and shows no love or warmth.A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone.Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted.Now a cold-hearted person is someone who has no sympathy.Several popular songs in recent years were about cold-hearted men or cold-hearted women who,without feelings,broke the hearts of their lovers.
"Out in the cold"means not getting something that everybody else got.A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise--he was left out in the cold.And it is not a pleasant place to be.
56.There areC expressions related to cold that are mentioned in the passage.
A.3B.4C.6D.7
57.When you refuse to speak to a man and treat him in a distant way,you may express by"A".
A.I give him the cold shoulder
B.I think he is a cold-blooded man
C.I think he is a cold fish
D.I'm likely to get cold feet
58.If Sue shows absolutely no reaction to those awful pictures of starving children in Africa,you will sayC.
A.she is a cold-blooded killer
B.she gets cold feet
C.she is a cold fish
D.she is out in the cold
59.We can use the expression"D"to describe a man who abandons or hurts his lover without mercy.
A.cold-blooded
B.cold shoulder
C.cold feet
D.cold-hearted
60.The topic of this passage is aboutC.
A.the relationship between cold and our body
B.some expressions about friendship
C.some expressions connected with cold
D.how cold weather comes into being.

1.Vaccines are substances that help the body fight off diseases and illnesses.In the past they have helped save millions of lives around the world.
Diseases are often caused by bacteria or viruses that attack the human body.A vaccine is a dead or very weak form of such a virus.When you get a vaccination from your doctor the body it gets used to these weaker viruses and can produce antibodies which stay active for a long time.When the real virus or bacteria attack,the body becomes immune and can defend itself.
People can get their vaccinations in many forms.Very often the vaccine is injected into your body,but vaccines are also taken by mouth or are breathed in.
Although many vaccines protect you throughout your life,some provide immunity for only a certain time.Vaccines against the flu must be administered every year,because the flu virus can change or may appear in a different form.
Most people already have a certain amount of immunity in their bodies.It is passed to them from their mother.However,these antibodies do not protect a baby for a long time,so that many vaccines are given to infants in their first years
Some illnesses only occur in certain areas.If you travel,for example,to tropical regions,you should get vaccines to protect you from yellow fever,malaria or hepatitis.
Vaccines have virtually put an end to many diseases.Smallpox,for example,was once one of the world's most serious diseases,which killed millions every year.By the end of the 1970s smallpox had disappeared completely because nearly everyone was vaccinated.
The first vaccines were created towards the end of the 18th century.An English scientist,Edward Jenner,carried out experiments with cowpox,a milder form of smallpox.He found out that people who got cowpox rarely got ill from smallpox.In France,Louis Pasteur developed a weak form of rabies to protect people from dog bites.In the 20th century polio has been wiped out completely.
Today there are vaccines for many illnesses.The most common are the flu,cholera,the plague,hepatitis.
Although vaccination is widely available and a part of the regular health program in almost all industrial countries,there are still countries,especially in the Third World where people die of serious diseases.About three million children each year are killed by diseases that could have been prevented.In developing countries almost two thirds of all children are not vaccinated.The World Health Organization is fighting to provide vaccines for these children.
58.Which paragraph of the passage gives the principle of vaccines?B
A.Paragraph 1
B.Paragraph 2
C.Paragraph 3
D.Paragraph 4
59.Which is true according to the passage?D
A.One should receive all kinds of vaccines to stay fully healthy.
B.Those who have got smallpox will never suffer from cowpox.
C.Everyone all over the world can benefit greatly from vaccines.
D.People have become free from some illnesses due to vaccines.
60.Which of the following would be the proper title for the passage?B
A.Some Diseases Have Disappeared
B.Vaccines Protect Us from Diseases
C.You Should Develop Your Immunity
D.Poor Children Are in Need of Vaccines.

5.People say teenagers are no good.They make too much noise in shopping malls; they drive recklessly up and down America's main streets; they carry chips on their shoulders as big as the Sears Tower.And at least some of the time those things are true.But we shouldn't forget that there are hard moments in the life of a teenager too.
I watched such a moment not long ago at a woman's funeral.I didn't expect the event to affect me.Through much of the ceremony,in fact,I remained unmoved.
The teenage grandson stepped forward.With his very first deep breath,every heart in that church was achingly reminded of something we had all forgotten.Softly he began:"I want to share a few values that Nana taught me.She never failed to see light in any situation.When our family dog would truly attack her,what would Nana say?'oh,what beautiful barking that dog has!'That was Nana."
"She was a strong woman who often lived in the shadow of my grandpa,who was a successful businessman in this city.But she was the one behind the scenes who provided the strength and support for my grandpa's career,"he said,with a voice now trembling,"That was Nana's way."
Through a low sob,he continued,"Whenever she did anything worth recognition, you'd have to hear about it from a different source, because she was never one to show off."
Finally,in a voice breaking free of sorrow,he looked up and said,"Nana taught me courage.She put up an incredible fight to the end,when she died peacefully,which is how she lived her life.That was Nana's way,and I hope I can carry on in the same manner."
There are no hearts as sensitive as those of teenagers,because everything is happening to them for the first time.The trouble with teenagers is that they haven't learned to be controlled.When that boy rose to speak about the woman who surely had been his truest and best friend,his honest voice dragged each of us out into the open where we could no longer hide in the calm ceremony.He exposed us to the truth about this very real woman who believed in a boy who probably tried the patience of many adults.He reminded us that his grandmother was more than another dot on the chart of life and death.
All over again we felt those powerful losses crossing our own hearts,and we knew that when you say good-bye to something happy,something young in yourself.And that something never really returns,and the pain never really goes away.
