20.When we think about giving help to developing countries,we often think about giving money so that these countries can build schools and hospitals,buy food and medicine,or find clean water supplies.These seem to be the most important basic needs of the people we are trying to help.However,it's far from enough.Ladies and gentlemen.we've got to come up with some better ideas to help them.
I was very surprised,then,when I read about a plan to make cheap laptop computers for children in developing countries.A man called Nicholas Negroponte invented a cheap laptop computer,which can run without electricity.He decided to invent this computer after he visited a school in Cambodia.
The laptop which Mr.Negroponte has designed is a little different from the normal laptop computers you can buy in the shops.One difference is that it is covered in rubber so that it is very strong and won't be damaged easily.As an electricity supply can be a problem in developing countries,the computer also has a special handle so that children can   wind it to give the computer extra power when needed.
These special laptop computers will cost less than 100US dollars and Mr.Negroponte wants to build as many as 15million machines in the first year of production.The idea b that these computers will help the children's education as they will be able to access the Internet.These computers might not help the people in developing countries immediately,but by improving children's education they should help people to find their own solutions to their problems in the long term.
Another idea to help children in developing countries is to recycle old mobile phones that they can be used again.In the UK,and,probably in many other countries too,millions of mobile phones are thrown away every year.The waste created by throwing away these old phone is very bad for the environment,so it seems to be an excellent ideal recycle them.In this way we will be able to achieve two important goals at the same time.We will reduce the waste we produce and help others.In other words,we will be able to‘kill two birds with one stone',and that is always a good thing.

56.It's an excellent idea to recycle old mobile phones becauseA.
A.it reduces waste and can help others
B.it prevents waste and can earn lots of money
C.it can send the waste produced by developed countries to other countries
D.it is good for the environment and very educative for phone users
57.The author gives the example of Mr.Negroponte's cheap computersD.
A.to show what high tech can bring us.
B.to illustrate the kindness of people in the developed countries
C.to show how to find business opportunities in developing countries
D.to give an example of how to help developing countries
58.Which of the following statements is TRUE about Mr.Negroponte's cheap computers?C

C.His computers will help children in developing countries to have better education.
D.His computers will help people in developing countries to find all the solutions.
59.Which of the following can be used to replace the underlined word in Paragraph 3?B
A.blow    B.turn    C.push  D.lift

5.Microsoft Windows XP support ends:How to update?If you're still running Windows XP-what do you do now?This doesn't mean that computers running the operating system will stop working,but it is likely that the computer will be attacked by hackers as the company stops providing security-updates and technical support for Windows XP.
Generally speaking,you have two new choices:Buy a new computer or update to Windows 7or Windows 8.1.If you're not ready to make a change,there are things you should do if you'll still be on XP over the next couple of months.
Firstly,make sure the software you have is as up-to-date as possible.That means having any security fixes you can't get from Microsoft's website and make sure that you've got some (non-Microsoft) antivirus software installed(安装) from other websites.Of course,if you want to keep really safe then you'd better stay off the web altogether,though for many users this won't even be a choice.Another choice is to change from using an administrator account to a limited account for tasks,like checking your e-mail.This means that if a hacker attacks your computer,at least they won't have administrator-level access.
However,we have to stress that these steps are just temporary(临时的) measures and aren't enough to protect your computer in the long run.Whether you're buying a new computer or simply updating your present operating system depends on yourself.You'll have to choose between Windows 7and Windows 8.1.Whichever you go for,you'll need to check that your computer meets the minimum system requirements for either system.For either Windows 7or 8.1,you'll need at least a computer with 1GB of RAM,1GHz processor and 160GB of hard disk space.However,to run a better operating system,you'll need a computer with over 4GB of RAM,a 2GHZ processor and 500GB of hard disk space.Buying a new computer with these functions,you may pay more than$500.
If you're still planning on updating,Microsoft offers some great guides on their own website,meaning that you can download your new operating system and copy all your old files without leaving your computer.Windows 7is certainly better than Windows XP,but you should be aware that it is also an‘old'operating system.Microsoft Company will add more updates to Windows 8.1over time,while Windows 7will also come to an end before long-just like XP.

58.‘Microsoft Windows XP support ends'means thatB.
A.the operating system of Windows XP will stop working
B.Microsoft stops providing technical support for Windows XP
C.people must install other websites'antivirus software for Windows 7.
D.people must buy a new computer and update to Windows 7or Windows 8.1
59.To prevent a hacker from attacking your computer,you'd better NOTC.
A.update your computerB.stay off the web altogether
C.use an administrator account  D.install some antivirus soft wares
60.From the fourth paragraph,D is a better choice in the long run.
A.buying a new computer as Windows XP support ends
B.updating your present operating system to protect your computer
C.having a new computer with at least 1GB of RAM,1GHz of hard disk space
D.choosing a new computer with over 4GB of RAM and 500GB of hard disk space
61.From the passage we can conclude thatB.
A.hacker attacks will happen more often in the future
B.an operating system develops quickly as time goes by
C.a new computer will be more expensive than it used to be
D.people tend to use security fixes except Microsoft Company's.

19.Welcome to the world of multitasking-a place where the measure of a person is how many jobs they can perform at the same time.In fact,if experts are to be believed, multitasking is a disastrous idea.
One of the opponents of multitasking is Dr.Clifford Nass,a professor at Stanford University."People who multitask frequently are less able to pay attention; they're worse at managing their memory."he said.In his opinion, the loss that we get with multitasking is harmless in some situations, for example, part of doing business in the digital world:but you can't do serious work like writing, thinking or solving an important problem this way.You do worse even as you think you're doing better. All the time the research points to a simple fact:the brain cannot cope. When you stop midway through composing a report to check an email, you force your brain to stop and regroup. It is like pressing the pause button during a movie, meaning the film takes longer to watch.
And as for Dr.Nass, the problems extend beyond the brain.Young people who frequently multitask are not as socially and emotionally healthy as those who don't.They just feel more emotionally satisfied and the feeling is so good and they are bound to desire it again.Todd Oppenheimer,a writer said"We've become a very short-term society and don't reward people for taking a lot of time on something."He fears we may end up losing the next generation of great thinkers."It's really unfortunate because the long-term challenges of our world-environmental issues, financial issues-require people to think wisely about the long-term consequences of what they do.And it's no coincidence that the kind of people who do think long-term don't multitask."

29.According to Dr.Nass,multitaskingD.
A.makes the performance emotionally affected only
B.contributes to memorizing various things
C.may result in losing the next generation of great thinkers
D.can be performed using digital tools
30.From the passage,we can tellB.
A.the loss that we get with multitasking is harmless
B.we mistakenly believe that we're doing better by switching between tasks
C.doing multitasking does harm to us in every area
D.for every task you add to your multitasking, you can finish your goal quicker
31.Which of the following is a multitasking addict?C
A.You turn your cellphone to silence when you're out to dine with friends.
B.You watch from start to finish without distraction when playing a DVD.
C.You have your office desk covered with paperwork from various unfinished projects.
D.You feel that when you try to do too much at once, the result always suffers.
32.The author mainly wants to tell usA.
A.the less you switch, the better you do
B.it is more efficient to do things all in a mixed way
C.it takes longer for us to become a great thinker
D.we shouldn't be lazy if we want to accomplish many tasks.

20.Some scientists say that animals in the oceans are increasingly threatened by noise pollution caused by human beings.
The noise that affects sea creatures comes from a number of human activities.It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions,ocean drilling,and ship engines.Such noises are added to natural sounds.These sounds include the breaking of ice fields,underwater earthquakes,and sounds made by animals themselves.
Decibels (分贝) measured in water are different from those measured on land.A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears.In water,a decibel level of one hundred and ninety-five would have the same effect.
Some scientists have suggested setting a noise limit of one hundred and twenty decibels in the oceans.They have observed that noises at that level can frighten and confuse whales(鲸鱼).
A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that louder noises can seriously injure some animals.
The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing.This seriously affected the whales'ability to exchange information and find their way.Some of the whales even died.The explosions had caused their ears to bleed and become infected(被感染的).
Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds are against a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels.They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research.
Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals.However,many scientists don't think that noise is a greater danger than they believed.They want to prevent noises from harming creatures in the ocean.

26.According to the passage,which of the following is increasingly dangerous to sea creatures?C
A.The sound of  ______ cars.

A.sounds made by animals themselves   B.ocean drilling
C.underwater earthquakes              D.the breaking of ice fields
28.Which of the following is discussed in the third paragraph?A
A.The same noise level produces a different effect on land and in the ocean.
B.Different places may have different types of noises.
C.The decibel is not a right unit (单位) for measuring underwater noise.
D.Different ocean animals may have different reactions to noises.
29.Which of the following is true of whales?D
A.They won't be confused by noises.
B.They are deaf to noises.
