下面是对这几本书的简要介绍,请把它们对应的封面信息找出来:

In this collection, Bill Bryson is writing from home. We find he assesses life both in New England and in the contemporary United States. With the telescopic perspective(远望视角) of one who has stepped out of the American mainstream and come back after 20 years, Bryson holds the mirror up to U.S. culture and feel strange to his motherland.

This book is a guide to the world’s unspoilt sights and experiences. It presents one thousand fresh and fascinating alternatives to hundreds of well-known tourist destinations and sights, including alternatives to the Carnival in Rio and the beaches of Thailand, the most-visited national parks, over-rated restaurants and holiday sites.

Returning to the U.S. after 20 years in England, Bill Bryson decided to reconnect with his mother country by hiking the length of the 2100-mile Appalachian Trail. Awed by merely the camping section of his local sporting goods store, he still goes into the wilderness and learns hard lessons about self-reliance.

A travelogue by Bill Bryson is as close to a sure thing as funny books get. This book is no exception. Following an urge to rediscover his youth, the author leaves his native Des Moines, Iowa, in a journey that takes him to across 38 states in the country, which is like a small town in his opinion.

Born in Iowa, Bryson backpacked through Europe as a young man. While living in England some 20 years later, he revisited many of the same places from arctic Norway’s northern lights to romantic Capri in Italy. Here he jumps back and forth between old memories and new experiences.

Dear Editor,

I’m a senior high school student, named Li Hua. Now many students

have iPods and think it’s a fashion to use it. Using an iPod , we can listen

to music, downloading a lot of learning materials and read them on the

screen. Apparently, it is helpful to our study, specially to our English listening.

Some students, however, take their iPods to the classroom and listen to

music with earphones, which make the teacher and other students greatly

annoyed. What’s worse, some of them even waste the precious time in class

playing video games.

In my opinion, as students, we shall make good use of iPod to

help achieve academic successes. Classroom is a place for students to

study, and therefore concentration awfully needed for us to learn

our lessons. Furthermore, the school should make a rule to guide the

students to use iPods in a proper way.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

Three Central Texas men were honored with the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Director’s Award in a Tuesday morning ceremony for their heroism in saving the victims of a fiery two-car accident.

The accident occurred on March 25 when a vehicle lost control while traveling on a rain-soaked State Highway 6 near Baylor Camp Road. It ran into an oncoming vehicle, leaving the passengers trapped inside as both vehicles burst into flames.

Bonge was the first on the scene and heard children screaming. He broke through a back window and pulled Mallory Smith, 10, and her sister, Megan Smith, 9, from the wreckage.

The girls’ mother, Beckie Smith, was not with them at the time of the wreck, as they were traveling with their baby sitter, Lisa Bowbin.

Beckie Smith still remembers the sickening feeling she had upon receiving the call informing her of the wreck and the despair as she drove to the scene.

Bozeman and Clemmons arrived shortly after Bonge and helped rescue the other victims and attempted to put out the fires.

“I was nervous,” Bozeman said. “I don’t feel like I’m a hero. I was just doing what anyone should do in that situation. I hope someone would do the same for me.”

Everyone at the accident made it out alive, with the victims suffering from nonlife-threatening injuries. Mallory Smith broke both femurs(股骨), and Megan had neck and back injuries. Bowbin is still recovering from a broken pelvis(骨盆), ankle and foot.

The rescuers also were taken to the hospital and treated for cuts and smoke breathing, Bonge said.

In addition, Bozeman got to meet accident victim Anthony Russo in the hospital after the accident, where Russo presented him with a glass frame inscribed(刻;雕 )with “Thank you,” Bozeman said. Those involved in that fateful encounter on Highway 6 credited God blessing for bringing them together.

“Whatever the circumstances, Tuesday’s ceremony provided a time to be grateful for those who put their lives on the line for the lives of complete strangers,” Beckie Smith said, “We’re calling it The Miracle on Highway 6.”

Motherhood is a career to respect

A WOMAN renewing her driver’s license at the CountyClerk’s office was asked to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.

“What I mean is,” explained the recorder, “do you have a job, or are you just a...”

“Of course I have a job,” said Emily. “I’m a mother.”

“We don’t list ‘mother’ as an occupation... ‘housewife’ covers it,” said the recorder.

One day I found myself in the same situation. The Clerk was obviously a career woman, confident and possessed of a high sounding title. “What is your occupation?” she asked.

The words simply popped out. “I’m a Research Associate (研究员) in the field of Child Development and Human Relations.”

The clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in midair.

I repeated the title slowly, then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement (声明) was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.

“Might I ask,” said the clerk with interest, “just what you do in your field?”

Coolly, without any trace of panic in my voice, I heard myself reply, “I have a continuing program of research (what mother doesn’t), in the laboratory and in the field (normally I would have said indoors and out). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities (any mother care to disagree?), and I often work 14 hours a day (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most careers and the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money.”

There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk’s voice as she completed the form, stood up, and showed me out.

As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up (激励) by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants – ages 13, 7, and 3.

Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model (a 6-month-old baby), in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal pattern.

I felt proud! I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable (不可缺少的) to mankind than “just another mother.”

Motherhood... What a glorious career! Especially when there’s a title on the door.

1. How did the female clerk feel at first when the writer told her occupation?

  A. Cold-hearted. B. Open-minded.

  C. Puzzled. D. Interested.

2. How many children does the writer have?

  A. 3 B. 4 C. 7 D. 13

3.Why did the woman clerk show more respect to the writer?

  A. Because she thought the writer did admirable work.

  B. Because the writer cared little about rewards.

  C. Because the writer did something that she had little knowledge of.

  D. Because she admired the writer's research work.

4. What is the point of the article?

  A. To show that how you describe your job affects your feelings toward it.

  B. To show that the writer had a grander job than Emily.

  C. To argue that motherhood is a worthy career.

  D. To show that being a mother is hard and boring work.

科目:高中英语 来源: 题型:阅读理解

Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad has been retired. But he didn’t go quietly. In his final speech, he blamed the Jewish people for the problems between Israel and the Palestinians.
“The Jews have taken land of the Muslims,” he said. “What if part of America was given to the Jews as Israel? Would the Americans let it happen? Of course not.”
His words angered many western governments, but Mahathir doesn’t care. “I like to speak my mind,” the 77-year-old explained. “Sometimes people don’t like it. But that is what leadership is all about.”
Loved by some and disliked by others, his 22 years in power have seen great changes in Malaysia. He has taken it from being one of Asia’s poorest countries to the world’s 18th largest trading nation. It is also a peaceful country with native Malaysians living alongside minority groups. Chinese make up a quarter of the population, while a further 7.4 percent are of Indian origin. Teenage girls wearing Muslim headscarves happily walk around large stores as ethnic Chinese play mah-jong in nearby cafes.
But Mahathir has made enemies at home and abroad and some people will be glad he has gone. The US was unhappy when he often blamed it for globalization. Meanwhile, critics say that he has limited the freedom of the Malaysian people in order to stay in control of the country. Despite this, he is a hero to leaders in Southeast Asia as well as those in the Islamic world. “He marked out the path to success for developing nations in the region to follow,” said Thai President Thaksin Shinawatra.
Now he just wants to enjoy his retirement and insists that he will not take on a special role in government. “I’m a nobody,” he said. But many Malaysians do not agree with this.
Notes:
①    Muslim  adj. 穆斯林的
②    mah-jong  n. 麻将
③    Islamic  adj. 伊斯兰教的
Choose the best answers according to the above:

  1. 1.

What does Mahathir probably mean by saying “But that is what leadership is all about.”?

    1. A.
The Jews have taken land of the Muslines by strong power of their leadership.
    2. B.
America should give part of its land to Israel though its leadership is powerful.
    3. C.
Leadership has the obligation to speak up what you think is right or wrong.
    4. D.
As a leader of a country, you have the right to teach those in other countries what to do and how.
  2. 2.

Which is NOT true about the following?

    1. A.
Malaysia was no longer poor after Mahathir came into power.
    2. B.
Malaysia is a country with natives and other minorities like Jews living alongside
      peacefully.
    3. C.
Malaysia developed a lot within Mahathir’s power but freedom of Malaysians was
      limited.
    4. D.
Mahathir’s role in the world is both a hero to leaders in Southeast Asia but also a possible enemy of some countries.
  3. 3.

The best title of this passage would be _________.

    1. A.
      A Religion Enthusiast
    2. B.
      Mahathir’s Political Policy
    3. C.
