Children have their own rules in playing games. They seldom need a referee(裁判) and rarely trouble to keep scores. They don’t care much about who wins or loses, and it doesn’t seem to worry them if the game is not finished. Yet, they like games that depend a lot on luck, so that their personal abilities can’t be directly compared. They also enjoy games that move in stages, in which each stage, the choosing of leaders, the picking-up of sides, or the determining of which side shall start, is almost a game in itself.

Grown-ups can hardly find children’s games exciting, and they often feel puzzled at why their kids play such simple games again and again. However, it is found that a child plays games for very important reasons. He can be a good player without having to think whether he is a popular person, and he can find himself being a useful partner to someone of whom he is ordinarily afraid. He becomes a leader when it comes to his turn. He can be confident, too, in particular games, where it is his place to give orders, to pretend to be dead, to throw a ball actually at someone, or to kiss someone he has caught.

It appears to us that when children play a game they imagine a situation under their control. Everyone knows the rules, and more importantly, everyone plays according to the rules. Those rules may be childish, but they make sure that every child has a chance to win.

71. What is TRUE about children when they play games?

  A. They can stop playing any time they like.     B. They can test their personal abilities.

  C. They want to pick a better team             D. They don’t need rules.

72. One of the reasons that a child likes playing games is that ___________.

   A. he can be someone other than himself      B. he can become popular among friends

   C. he finds he is always lucky in games       D. he likes the place where he plays a game

73. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE about children who play games?

A. They have equal chances to win         B. Everyone obeys the rules.

C. They are afraid of their partners         D. The situation they think of is in their control

74. The writer believes that __________________________.

A. children should make better rules for their games

B. children should invite grown-ups to play with them

C. children’s games can benefit them a lot

D. children play games without reasons

What time is it? Most people are pretty accurate in their answer. And if you don’t know for sure, it’s very likely that you can find out. There may be a watch on your wrist; there may be a clock on the wall, desk, or computer screen; or maybe you’re riding in a car that has a clock in the dashboard(仪表板).

Even if you don’t have a timepiece of some sort nearby, your body keeps its own beat. Humans have an internal clock that regulates the beating of our heart, the pace of our breathing, the discharge(排出) of chemicals within our bloodstream, and many other bodily functions.

Time is something from which we can’t escape. Even if we ignore it, it’s still going by, ticking away, second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour. So the main issue in using your time well is, “Who’s in charge?” We can allow time to slip by and let it be our enemy. Or we can take control of it and make it our ally.

By taking control of how you spend your time, you’ll increase your chances of becoming a more successful student. Perhaps more importantly, the better you are at managing the time you devote to your studies, the more time you will have to spend on your outside interests.

The aim of time management is not to schedule every moment so we become all saves of a timetable that governs every waking moment of the day. Instead, the aim is to permit us to make informed choices as to how we use our time. Rather than letting the day go by, largely without our awareness, what we are going to discuss next can make us better able to control time for our own purposes.

65. The underlined word “ally” in Para. 3 most likely means somebody or something that is

   ____________.

   A. your slave and serves you                 B. your supporter and helps you

   B. under your control and obeys you          D. under your influence and follows you

66. The author intends to tell us that time ______.

   A. could be regulated by a timepiece such as a clock or a watch

B. could be managed by the internal clock of human bodies

   C. should be well managed for our own interest

   D. should be saved for outside interests

67. In the next part, the author would most probably discuss with you ______.

   A. how to keep up with the times           B. how to make up for lost time

   C. how to have a good time                   D. how to make good use of time

I still remember the day when my mom said, “Let’s get you some new clothes.” You can imagine that to any little girl that would mean the world, but to me it meant the universe, because we were not very rich. After she said that, all I could think about was what kinds of clothes I would choose. To my surprise, my mom allowed me to pick out three dresses: a pink one, a blue one and a yellow one. The yellow one was my favorite.

I had a best friend named Seema, whose family was even poorer than ours. We played and studied together, and spent the best days of our childhood laughing at the silly stories we made up. I was excited to show her my three beautiful new dresses. She loved them all and was happy for me, but tearfully explained to me that her father could only afford to buy her clothes for her birthday. I felt sorry, and then did something that surprised even myself: I asked her to pick out one of my dresses for herself. To my disappointment, she picked up my favorite—the yellow one. Please remember, I was only seven years. My heart almost popped out (跳出) of my chest. But as she held it against her body, and I saw how brightly she smiled, I stopped feeling any hurt. I told her it looked lovely on her.

I’ll always remember Seema’s smile, and how at that moment nothing mattered more. When you value your friendships, nothing else matters! We’re still best friends today.

56. Why did the new clothes mean the universe to the author?

A. She loved dressing up more than anything else.

B. She thought they would make her more beautiful.

C. Her family was poor, and new clothes were very rare.

D. Her mother only bought her new clothes for her birthday.

57. The author let Seema pick out one of her dresses because she wanted to _______.

A. show her pity for Seema’s family          B. show off her family’s wealth

C. make Seema become her best friend        D. exchange it with Seema’s dress

58. When Seema chose the yellow dress, the author was disappointed because ________.

A. she was not generous           B. she didn’t expert to lose her favorite dress

C. Seema chose her favorite dress on purpose   D. Seema was careless about her feelings

59. What can we conclude from the passage?

A. Getting a best friend means losing other things. B. Being generous is not easy.

C. Children like sharing their favorite things.     D. Friendship is precious (珍贵的).

It is sometimes said that English is English and that there are no differences between different kinds of English, but this is not the case. American English is generally quite different from UK English. The main differences are the use of certain words and spelling. American English is much more phonetic (与发音近似的) than UK English and in American English a ‘z’ or a ‘c’ is often used where an ‘s’ would be used in British English.

Words can vary in different types of English as well. British people talk of “rubbish” while the Americans call this “garbage”. The UK people have “petrol”, but the Americans have “gasoline”.

The differences between these ways of using English make translating works into English a difficult business. There are translation tools on the Internet, but these can often translate words in a very direct (直接的) way and the end result is a sentence that has lost its meaning.

The best way of translating any written piece of work into the English language is to first decide what kind of English is you want the piece to be translated into. For example, if it is for a British market, then use the UK English. For the best result, always use some kind of spelling and grammar checker so you can make sure that you are using the proper terms, spelling and vocabulary.

60. Which of the following statements will the writer most probably agree with?
  A. UK English is much more phonetic than American English.
  B. There are differences between different kinds of English.
  C. American English is different from British English only in spelling.
  D. It is easier to learn British English than to learn American English.
61. The underlined word “vary” in Paragraph 2 probably means __________.

A. change                     B. organize                   C. make         D. use

62. We can infer (推断) from Paragraph 3 that __________.
  A. works translated into English will certainly lose their meaning
  B. we should never translate words into English in a direct way
  C. translating works into English is not difficult
  D. online translation tools are not so useful

63. What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
  A. The advantages of using a spelling and grammar checker.
  B. The differences between British English and American English.
  C. What we should do when we translate something into English.
  D. When we should use British English or American English
