The club members said it was one of the best compositions they____.

A. hear B. have heard

C. heard D. had heard

D

The only thing that troubled me more than the pain in my back that morning was my worries about money. I’d been excited to visit my sister--Therese, but all I could think about was how I’d hurt my back and had to down my hours at work. Even with my savings, I wasn’t sure I’d have enough to cover the bills.

“Are you OK?” Therese asked.

“Yeah,” I said. “Just wish I could stop worrying about .”

“Why don’t we make Mom’s cake?” she said. “Mom to make this kind of cake for all of us. It will you up.”

It wasn’t easy being a single mom, raising eight of us kids with money, but that couldn’t bring Mom down. She got that spirit from our grandmother, who was never about the hardships(艰难,困苦). Also, Mom was good at use of food. She always found a way to include a special(特别的) treat on birthday or Christmas--a tasty cake with 43 eggs, milk or butter.

“ how we’d all run around the living room singing,‘eggless, milkless, butterless cake’?” Therese asked, laughing.

“Those were good times,” I said. We didn’t have money, we knew how to have together.

Thinking about the eight of us gathered around the kitchen table waiting for Mom to cut the cake my worries. Mom would make the cake extra for Christmas--a coin was put into the cake. “Whoever finds the in their cake can keep it and they won’t have to do housework for a week.”she would say.

My siblings﹙兄弟姐妹﹚and I are now separated from each other, but the cake still us.

“Cake’s done,” Therese said. I pulled it out of the oven(烤箱), then called everyone in. We gathered around the kitchen table, like old times.

“Feeling any ?” Therese asked.

“Yeah,” I said. I looked at the around the table, reminded once again that whatever hardships come my way I can do more than just get through them.

I can find in my life, even in a simple cake, and share it the ones I love.

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。(每个空格只填1个单词。)

Many people today are worried about the quality of the food they eat. This concern has led to an increasing number of organic products appearing on supermarket shelves. Many people refuse to buy products that contain artificial colorings or preservatives, or foods that come from genetically modified (GM) crops, fearing that these foods are unhealthy and can cause cancer and other diseases. Some advocates of genetically modified foods consider such attitudes unjustified. I am one of them, and in this essay I will try to justify why I think concerns about GM foods have little value.

First of all, GM foods have been around for almost 20 years. Contrary to the claims of those who oppose GM foods, there have not been any officially reported cases of such foods causing cancer or any other diseases. In fact, research into GM foods has been unable to confirm any harmful effects on human health whatsoever.

Secondly, not everyone can afford organic foods. Climate change and rising fuel costs have led to global increases in the price of food, and as a result, many poor people are spending more money on feeding themselves. Many can hardly afford to buy food. GM plants are generally more resistant to droughts, floods and pests, and have higher production per hectare(公顷), which leads to more affordable food prices.

The world population keeps growing and is expected to reach eight billion by 2015. People in fast-developing countries such as India and China are consuming more energy and food. The only solution to the ever-increasing demand for food is to grow more GM crops. Unless scientists and governments come up with a better solution, GM foods are here to stay.

To conclude, people are free to eat the food of their choice, whether it is organic or not. However, I think that many people overlook major benefits of GM foods, and instead choose to focus on the unproven negative effects of such foods.

Cloning is suggested as a means of bringing back a relative, usually a child, killed tragically. Some parents can understand that wish, but it must first be recognized that the copy would be a new baby and not the lost child. Here lies the difficulty, for the sad parents are seeking not a new baby but a return of the dead one. Since the original would be fondly remembered as having particular talents and interests, would not the parents expect the copy to be the same? It is possible, however, that the copy would develop quite differently. Is it fair for the new child to be placed in a family with such unnatural expectations?

Copying is also suggested as a means by which parents can have the child of their dreams. Couples might choose to have a copy of a film star, baseball player or scientist, depending on their interest. But because personality is only partly the result of genetic inheritance (基因遗传), conflicts would be sure to come up if the cloned child failed to develop the same interests as the original. What if the copy of Einstein shows no interest in science? Or the baseball player turns to acting? Success also depends upon fortune. What if the child does not live up to the hopes and dreams of the parents simply because of bad luck?

Every baby should be wanted for itself, as an individual. In making a copy of oneself or some famous person, a parent is carefully specifying (详细说明) the way he or she wishes that child to develop. In recent years, particularly in the United States, much importance has been placed on the right of individuals to reproduce in ways that they wish. So I suggest there is a greater need to consider the interest of the child and to refuse these suggested uses of cloning.

1.According to the author, in cloning a lost child parents ___________.

A. lose the talents of the lost child

B. expect too much from the copy

C. are sure to have an identical copy

D. are sure to have a baby of their dreams

2.What, in the author’s opinion, affects the success of parents’ dreams?

A. The efforts of the parents.

B. The cloned child’s personality.

C. The cloned child’s interest in Einstein.

D. The cloned child’s natural talent.

3.In the last paragraph, the author implies that ________.

A. the cloned child is viewed as independent

B. parents carefully protect the rights of the cloned child

C. parents are eager to wish the cloned child to be somebody.

D. the right of growing in his own way is taken away from the cloned child
