    17．Martha Graham，born in 1894，was one of the most famous dancers and creators of dance，whose influence on dance has been compared with the influence Picasso had on the modern visual arts，Stravinsky had on music，or Frank Lloyd Wright had on architecture．She created almost two hundred dance pieces．She is often called the Mother of Modern Dance．
    Earlier in her life，however，Martha did not know that she would become a dancer．At that time，the dancers were looked down on．So Martha's parents didn't approve of her desire to dance at the beginning．Until 1916，she began her studies at the newly created Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts，founded by Ruth St．Denis and Ted Shawn，where Graham worked very hard to improve her ability to dance because she was considered too old to begin dancing．
    In 1936，Graham made her defining work，"Chronicle"，which signaled the beginning of a new era in modern dance．The dance brought serious issues to the stage for the general public in a dramatic manner．Influenced by the Wall Street Crash of 1929，the Great Depression that followed，and the Spanish Civil War，it focused on depression and isolation，reflected in the dark nature of both the set and costumes．（服装）

    Parents do have the right to demand good manners and children should thank sincerely whoever gives them something．But kids can't know how blessed they are unless they have a basis for comparison．And they don't learn that by a parent complaining that they're ungrateful．We need to give our children the gift of a wider world view．Show by example that gratitude isn't about stuff-which ultimately can't make any of us happy anyway．It's about realizing how lucky you are and paying your good fortune forward．
    You can collect all the charitable appeals and sit down together with the kids to go through them．You set the budget for giving and the kids decide how it's distributed．Once the conversation about gratitude gets started，it's much easier to continue all year．Also you can set up a family routine at bedtime where kids describe three things that have made them grateful．When kids go off to college，you can text them a picture each week of something that inspires your appreciation．
    Teaching children to focus on the positive and appreciate the good in their lives is perhaps the greatest gift we can give them．And we can all learn together that the things that really matter aren't on sale at a department store．

    Psychological research exposes this unhealthy appetite for ignorance．In one study，students watched a false educational film about a serious disease called"TAA Deficiency"．In fact，TAA Deficiency is completely fictional，but the students were not told this information；instead，they were asked whether they wished to provide a cheek test for assessing（评估）their risk of developing the disease．Half of the students were told that if they ever developed TAA Deficiency，then the treatment would involve them taking a two-week course of pills．Of this group，52% agreed to provide the cheek test．The other half of students learned the treatment would involve taking the pills for the rest of their lives．Of this group，only 21% agreed to the test．
