There is an English saying “It never rains but it pours”. I now believe it was probably true. Last Saturday, I had a terrible time. It was rather cold, or quite sunny, so after lunch I went downtown, plan to buy a sweater. I was looking at the window of clothes shop when someone stole my wallet. While I was going to home, it started to rain and I arrived home coldly and miserable. I decided to have a hot bath. I was getting ready to have my bath while the doorbell rang. It was a salesman and it took me several minute to get rid of him. Unfortunate, all the time he was talking to us, the water was running. You can imagine the state of the bathroom!

I’m part of the Roots & Shoots program founded by Dr. Jane Goodall. The program is intended to make and promote positive changes in the world. As Dr. Goodall says, “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.”

In Bulgaria, where I live, homeless dogs are everywhere. Many people here turn a blind eye to them. But I cannot ignore the life of a street dog whenever I see one wandering in the street, looking for something to eat. That’s why I’m no longer a food waster. When I see wasted food, I always think of a hungry dog climbing to garbage bins, searching for food that people have thrown there. When eating in a restaurant, I’m not afraid to take leftover food to feed stray cats or dogs.

A week ago, I saw a homeless dog around the garbage bins. Immediately I knelt down, spoke to her softly and ran my hands over her. I could see that she had had puppies. I couldn’t imagine how she could have been able to care for them. Hours earlier, I’d bagged up a plate of leftover fish. As I unwrapped it, she wagged her tail and sniffed at it. She ate all the fish in no time.

It’s sad, isn’t it? I can’t understand why many of us waste so much and think little of it. These homeless animals have taught me that food is precious. Even when I don’t have leftovers with me, I’ll take the time to get something from the grocery store to feed them.

I know my power is small, so I hope that next time you see wasted food, do turn it into worthy food. You have the power to save a life!

1.The author uses what Dr. Goodall says to show__________.

A. how we can develop our business

B. why it is important to be great

C. why the program is popular globally

D. how we can change the world positively

2.What can be concluded from the text?

A. There are few homeless dogs where the author lives

B. The author takes homeless dogs home and raises them

C. Seeing homeless dogs makes the author never waste food

D. People throw food into garbage bins to feed homeless dogs

3.The author took the leftover fish with him to____________.

A. feed a homeless dog he met

B. eat it when he was hungry

C. look for more homeless animals

D. set an example to those who throw away food

4.The author wrote the text to ask us to__________.

A. value our food B. treat dogs as our friends

C. save wasted food for homeless dogs D. raise homeless dogs and cats

Although heat wasn't an issue at first,as it would become later, coming from New York to India would shock any foreign tourists.Quickly, however,I noticed how nice and helpful everyone was to us.The guest house we stayed in was full of people willing to help. The other two volunteers also helped to calm my nerves about being in India so far away from my home. After the first few days I was eager to get to Bal Ashram.

Upon getting to Bal Ashram,I was able to meet the boys, who called Bal Ashram their home. The center itself helps to rescue boys from child labor in various areas of India and give them a jump-start into education for free where they will then return to their families and continue their education. They are taught that without education there can be no future.Through education,Bal Ashram also builds a sense of community which can be seen with everyone who works and is taught here.Teaching English here to the children gave me great pride in knowing that these children would be helped within their own experiences here at Bal Ashram and their future lives. Each child was always willing to learn more.

Boys there were always seen laughing.Afternoon sports and nightly social events, including dancing, were just one of the many highlights with me and the children.Even my inner life was enriched, let alone theirs.Living in Bal Ashram also gave us a first hand view of village life in India as well as the culture and religion that surrounds this country.

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.

In the early 16thcentury, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.

Though the belief in the merit of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18thcentury. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War Ⅱ. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea; clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?

Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫学家),encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.

1.The kings of France and England in the 16thcentury closed bath houses because .

A. they lived healthily in a dirty environment.

B. they thought bath houses were to dirty to stay in

C. they believed disease could be spread in public baths

D. they considered bathing as the cause of skin disease

2.Which of the following best describes Henry IV’s attitude to bathing?

A. Afraid. B. Curious.

C. Approving. D. Uninterested.

3.How does the passage mainly develop?

A. By providing examples.

B. By making comparisons.

C. By following the order of time.

D. By following the order of importance.

4.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

A. To stress the role of dirt.

B. To introduce the history of dirt.

C. To call attention to the danger of dirt.

D. To present the change of views on dirt.

How to Calm Down at Work

The workplace can be a stressful place. Anxiety, conflict, bad management and overwork can lead to frustration and stress. 1.

Keep something you like to look at within sight. A photo of a loved one or a favorite personal souvenir are the best examples. Keep such an item somewhere you can glance at it whenever you wish to do so. 2.

Take a moment to engage your body. If you’re unable to leave your work area, stand and stretch for a moment. Muscle tension exercises can also help you calm down. 3. For instance, start by squeezing all of your face muscles as tightly as you can for twenty seconds and slowly releasing them.

Write down the reason why you are upset. 4. Getting your thoughts and feelings out on paper can help clarify the issue you’re having. Writing down your thoughts can even help you determine the best way to address your frustration or anxiety and move forward.

5. If you and another co-worker are constantly frustrated with one another, set up a time to speak with him or her. Say something like, “Hey, Sarah, let’s sit down sometime soon and chat to make sure we’re on the same page about our upcoming project.”

A. Turn to your workmates for help.

B. Communicate with your workmates.

C. A vase of flowers on your desk is another good example.

D. Focus on one particular muscle or muscle group at a time.

E. Here are the steps you can take to help you calm down at work.

F. Engage your body by rolling your head, shoulder, and ankles while sitting.

The popular smartphone application Instagram(照片分享)has changed the way we look at photography, even our world. The photo-worthy moments we share serve as an important function in cultivating the photographic artistic eye.

Instagram has got people to start noticing the art in their everyday life. It has also allowed us to share the artful moments in our lives with others. Clearly, making people focus on beautiful moments in their lives and how to share them is a positive takeaway from Instagram.

Not only has Instagram changed the way we look at things around us, but it has also changed the way people view professional photography. Instagram has turned everyone with a smartphone into an artist. Opening up art to the general community is a groundbreaking(创新的) aspect of this application. Making artistic attempts accessible for everyone to discover their artistic talents and explore creatively is something that has made people find the beauty in the everyday. However, this accessibility has also created questioning around art and respect deserved by professional photography.

The art in a professional photograph versus an Instagram can sometimes be hard to notice at a quick glance. But photographs taken by true professional photographers hold something that Instagram’s cannot match in terms of photographic quality, or advanced compositional knowledge.

This is not to say Instagram is a lesser art. Aesthetic qualities of art are a personal matter and how good an artwork is depends on personal preferences. Good is a very arbitrary term in the art world. For example, I may find one photo more pleasing than another, but not everyone has to agree with me.

The point I am trying to make is that professional photography should not be lost, but instead approached with a new, enhanced level of respect and admiration — despite how accessible, common and fun Instagram now makes the taking and sharing of photos.

1.What does the writer mainly tell us in the passage?

A. The increasing popularity of Instagram.

B. The advantages and disadvantages of Instagram.

C. The changes that Instagram brings us.

D. The differences between Instagram and professional photography.

2.What can the smartphone application Instagram do?

A. Help people to discover true self.

B. Inspire people to find the beauty in life.

C. Encourage people to be more competitive.

D. Let people gain others’ respect and admiration.

3.Why do people begin to doubt the art of professional photography?

A. Because common people can take perfect photos easily.

B. Because they show no respect for professional photographers.

C. Because the artistic level of professional photography is reducing.

D. Because Instagram has changed the way people look at the world.

4.What does the writer think of professional photography?

A. Useful. B. Valueless.

C. Helpless. D. Absurd.
