I was listening to the radio while 1 was driving home from coaching basketball yesterday. I could tell right away that there was something 1 by the mood of the speaker. There had been a plane crash. What made the 2even more tragic was that Bob Collins, the morning show man, was among those who had been killed. Throughout my 40-minute 3, I listened as sincere love and affection from the audience 4.The more I listened about how this man had influenced those around him, the more 5I became.
That was because I wanted to know6we as a culture, wait until somebody has passed away before we tell them how much they 7to us? Why do we wait until it is too late before we8someone up after they have died? Yes,9 memory after memory about someone's good10does help us cope with the sadness of losing someone special to us. But as we11remember this person, our words fall short of the ears that most need to hear12.
Just once, 13a gathering of death,1 would like to see a celebration of life,14stories are told, tears fall down, laughter rings out;and as the speaker15his or her loving tribute(颂词), the person they are16 rises from the chair and gives them a17hug! Wouldn’t that be 18!
Life is too short to leave kind words 19. How I wish that when the unavoidable funeral finally comes,we could say20with the knowledge that they knew exactly how people felt about them while they were here on earth.

As I sit at home thinking about my upcoming adventure and the things I need to bring, it makes me even more excited to begin my travel. I will be making my way around the world.
The first places on the list are Andalusia and Africa in the book The Alchemist. I will need to pack a lot of things and make sure I have enough money to provide myself with food and enough to drink. The Sahara desert is always hot and requires plenty of water.
Next I will head to Mexico in the book Born to Run, where I will meet the Tarahumara Indian tribe(部落). I will need to get into shape and do some jogging(慢跑) if I want to keep up with them. I will have to pack my running shoes, though, because the Tarahumarans have mastered the art of running on the tough land.
After Mexico, my journey takes me to the Egyptian desert in the novelThe Paris Vendetta. There I hope to help uncover an ancient conspiracy (阴谋) that goes back centuries. Just like my trip to Andalusia, I will have to make sure I have plenty of water. Packing the Camelbak products seems like the best idea, so I will have enough on hand at all times. I expect this adventure to be quite interesting, and I am very excited about it.
Lastly, I will make my way back to America in the book Shattered: Struck Down, But Not Destroyed. This makes me feel excited because like the main character in the book, I also wanted to become a professional athlete when I was younger. For this trip, I will go with an open mind and hopefully meet some friends along the way.
I am ready to embark on my adventure of traveling, and I cannot wait any longer!

A woman renewing her driver’s license at the County Clerk’s office was asked to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.
“What I mean is,” explained the recorder, “do you have a job, or are you just a …”
“Of course I have a job,” said Emily. “I’m a mother.”
“We don’t list ‘mother’ as an occupation…‘housewife’ covers it,” said the recorder.
One day I found myself in the same situation. The clerk was obviously a career woman, confident and possessed of a high sounding title. “What is your occupation?” she asked.
The words simply popped out. “I’m a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations.”
The clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in midair.
I repeated the title slowly, then I stared with wonder as my statement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.
“Might I ask,” said the clerk with new interest, “Just what you do in this field?”
Coolly, without any trace of panic in my voice, I heard myself reply, “I have a continuing program of research (what mother doesn’t), in the lab and in the field (normally I would have said indoors and out). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities (any mother care to disagree?), and I often work 14 hours a day (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most careers and rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money.”
There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk’s voice as she completed the form, stood up, and showed me out.
As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up (鼓舞) by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants---ages 13, 7, and 3.
Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model (a 6 month old baby), in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal(嗓音的) pattern.
I felt proud! I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable (不可缺少的) to mankind than “just another mother.”
Motherhood…What a glorious career! Especially when there’s a title on the door.
【小题1】 What can we infer from the conversation between the woman and the recorder at the beginning of the passage?

A.Motherhood was not recognized and respected as a job by society.
B.The recorder was impatient and rude.
C.The author was upset about the situation that mothers faced.
D.The woman felt ashamed to admit what her job was.
【小题2】How did the female clerk feel at first when the author told her occupation?
A.curiousB.indifferentC.interestedD.puzzled
【小题3】Why did the woman clerk show more respect for the author?
A.Because the author cared little about rewards.
B.Because she admired the author’s research work in the lab.
C.Because the writer did something she had little knowledge of.
D.Because she thought the author did admirable work.
【小题4】What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.To show how you describe your job affects your feelings toward it.
B.To show that the author had a grander job than Emily.
C.To argue that motherhood is a worthy career and deserves respect.
D.To show that being a mother is hard and boring work.

I went through a training program and became a literacy volunteer last surnmen The training
I received, though excellent, did not tell me how it was to work with a real student, however. When I began to discover what other people's lives were like because they could not read, I realized the true importance of reading.
My first student Marie was a 44-year-old single mother of three. In the first lesson, I found out she walked two miles to the nearest supermarket twice a week because she didn't know which bus to take. When I told her I would get her a bus schedule, she told me it would not help because she could not  read it. She said she also had difficulty once she got to the supermarket, because she couldn't always remember what she needed. Since she did not know words, she could not write out a shopping list. Also, she could only recognize items by sight, so if the product had a different label, she would not recognize it as the product she wanted.
As we worked together, learning how to read built Marie's self-confidence,which encouraged her to continue her studies. She began to make rapid progress and was even able to take the bus to the supermarketelt. After this successful trip, she reported how self-confident she felt. At the end of the program, she began helping her youngest son,Tony, a shy first grader with his reading. She sat with him before he went to sleep and together they would read bedtime stories. When his eyes became wide with excitement as she read, pride was written all over her face. As she described this experience, I was proud of myself as well. I found that helping Marie to build her self-confidence was more rewarding than anything I had ever done before.
As a literacy volunteer, I learned a great deal about teaching and helping others. In fact, I may have learned more from the experience than Marie did.
