While watching the Olympics the other night,I came across an incredible sight.The1was swimming and started with only three men.For one reason or another, two of them had a2start,so they were disqualified. That would have been difficult enough, not having anyone to3against.
I watched the man4off the blocks and knew immediately that something was wrong. Now I’m not an expert5but I do know a good dive6a poor one,and this was not exactly medal7.I listened to the crowd begin to8this poor man who was clearly having a9time.Finally he made his turn to start back.It was10.He made a few desperate strokes (划水) and you could tell he was exhausted.
But in those few11strokes,the crowd had changed. No longer were they laughing, but beginning to12.Some even began to13things like,“Come on,you can do it!”,and he14finished his race. The crowd went15.Even though he recorded one of the16times in Olympic history, this man gave more heart than any of the other17.
In a competition where athletes remove their silver medals, feeling they have18been cheated out of gold,or when they act so19in front of their competitors,it is nice to watch an underdog (失败者),a man that gave his all—knowing that he had no chance, but competed because of his20and the spirit of the games.

As the bus came near the Mile, a4 suddenly rang out, “5! This is your driver speaking.” We6 the back of the driver’s head. “Put your papers down. All of you.” The7 came down. “Now, turn and face the person next to you. Go8.”
Surprisingly we all did it. Still no one smiled. I faced an older woman, her head wrapped in a red scarf. I saw her9 every day. Our eyes met. We waited for the next10 from the driver. “Now repeat after me. Good morning, neighbor!”
Our voices were11. For many of us, these were the12 words we had spoken that day. But we said them together, like13, to the strangers beside us. We couldn’t help14. When I19 my stop, I said goodbye to my seatmate, and then jumped off the bus. That day I was20 off happily.

Recently I was invited to a friend’s house for supper—and had a meal I have never had before.
All the friends invited were a little surprised. It’s not that Ben is unsociable, or a bad cook, but it’s just that he never1more than he has to. So how come he was inviting us round for a meal? Had he bought something2for his friends? He greeted us at the door and showed us into his dining room where a3 -table was waiting for us.“Nothing but the best for my friends!”said Ben. We all sat down and looked4at each other—what was he up to?
Ben returned with four bowls of hot soup.“It’s a mixture of carrots, potatoes and tomatoes,”said Ben. The next5was also a little strange in that we didn’t quite know what it was again. It’s just another mixture of vegetable.
As we ate we chatted and finally the6turned back to what we were eating.“Was there a recipe(食谱) for this,”asked Marina,“or did you 7it up?”Ben put his fork down.“What I cooked depended on what I could find.”Marina was surprised.“But you can find anything in supermarkets these days.”“But there’s8choice in what you can find outside supermarkets,”he replied.
Seeing that we had all finished the food, Ben decided to tell the truth. He had read recently that supermarkets usually throw away 5 percent of their food every day. So Ben decided to look inside his local supermarket bins. There he found food that was slightly out of9, boxes of throw-away vegetables and fruit.
So Ben had successfully provided a decent(体面的) meal for his friends, and made us aware of the fact that there are many poor people who need the food, but the amount of food thrown away is enough to10millions of people.
