    Stress can come from any situation or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or anxious. What is stressful to one person is not necessarily stressful to another. Anxiety is a feeling of worry or fear. The source of this uneasiness is not always known or recognized, which can add to the unhappiness you feel.

    Certain drugs can lead to symptoms of anxiety due to either side effects or withdrawal(脱离期) from the drug. A poor diet----for example, low levels of vitamin B12 -- can also contribute to stress or anxiety. Performance anxiety is related to specific situations, like taking a test or making a presentation in public. People with generalized anxiety disorder experience almost constant worry or anxiety about many things on more than half of all days for 6 months. Panic disorder or panic attacks involve sudden and unexplained fear, rapid breathing, and increased heartbeat.

The most effective solution is to find and address the source of your stress or anxiety. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. The first step is to take an inventory of what you think might be making you "stress out". Then, find someone you trust (friend, family member, neighbor, clergy) who will listen to you. Often, just talking to a friend or loved one is all that is needed to relieve anxiety. Most communities also have support groups and hotlines that can help. Also, find healthy ways to cope with stress. For example:

•Eat a well-balanced, healthy diet. Don't overeat.

     •Get enough sleep.

     •Exercise regularly.

     •Limit caffeine and alcohol.

     •Don't use nicotine, cocaine, or other recreational drugs.

     •Learn and practice relaxation techniques like yoga, tai chi, or meditation.

     •Take breaks from work. Make sure to balance fun activities with your responsibilities. Spend time with people you enjoy.

     •Find self-help books at your local library or bookstore.

Stress causes the brain to release adrenaline(肾上腺素)which in turn increases our energy and excitement.The chemical gives us clearer minds and helps us to do more.This is why some people say they work better under a deadline.

Adrenaline that is not released for long periods of time can cause us to increase and strengthen our abilities instead of weakening them.We sometimes turn out our very best work when we push ourselves to the limit.Stress can also make us more confident.Handling small amounts of stress now prepares us for handling serious situations in the future.Who knows? Today's stress may even prepare for the next polar bear that comes along!

A major source of teen stress is school exams, and test anxiety is not uncommon. When you recognize your teen is under stress, how can parents help your teen stay calm before an exam?

Show a positive attitude. Your panic, anxiety and blame contribute to your teen’s pressure. Make your teen feel accepted and valued for her efforts. Most importantly, reassure your teen that things will be all right, no matter what the results are.
