Last week my parents and I took a two-days trip to Emei Mountain in Sichuan. As everyone knows, it’s famous mountain with all kinds of plants and animals. The weather was fine. It was almost noon we arrived at the foot of the mountain. The three of them were very excited. As we climbed the mountain, we fed monkeys, visiting temples and told stories. On the way up I was busy taking picture since the scenery was so beautiful. The time passes quickly. Evening came. We spent the night in a hotel at the top of the mountain. The food was expensive and the service was good. I was very tired that I fell asleep at the moment my head touched the pillow.

Mr. Selfridge, the Wisconsin-born retailer (零售商) who left school at 14, rose to become a partner in Marshall Field's, Chicago. Founded in 1852, it was one of the first and most ambitious US department stores. Mr. Selfridge had done well with Marshall Field's. He liked to say, “The customer is always right,” which made the Chicago store popular. And he is believed to have invented the phrase “Only so many Shopping Days until Christmas”.

When he visited London on holiday in 1906 he was surprised to find most of the city's department stores were no match for their American and Parisian competitors. This led Selfridge to leave the US and establish Selfridges. a department store named after him at the west end of London's Oxford Street. It’s a popular belief that a fish’s memory lasts for only seven seconds. It may seem sad to think that they don’t remember what they’ve eaten or where they’ve been, and they don’t recognize you or any of their friends — every moment in their life would be like seeing the world for the first time.

But don’t be so quick to feel sorry for them. A new study has found that fish have a much better memory than we used to think. In fact, certain species of fish can even remember events from as long as 12 days ago.

In the study, researchers from MacEwan University in Canada trained a kind of fish called African cichlids to go to a certain area of their tank to get food. They then waited for 12 days before putting them back in the tank again.

Researchers used computer software to monitor the fish’s movements. They found that after such a long break the fish still went to the same place where they first got food. This suggested that they could remember their past experiences.

In fact, scientists had been thinking for a long time that African cichlids might have a good memory. An earlier study showed that they behaved aggressively(挑衅地) in front of certain fish, perhaps because they remembered their past “fights”. But until the latest findings, there was no clear evidence.

Just as a good memory can make our lives easier, it also plays an important part when a fish is trying to survive in the wild.

“If fish are able to remember that a certain area contains safe food, they will be able to go back to that area without putting their lives at risks,” lead researcher Trevor Hamilton told Live Science.

For a long time, fish were placed far below chimpanzees, dolphins and mice on the list of smart animals. But this study has given scientists a new understanding of their intelligence.

1.What is the article mainly about?

A. Fish having very bad memories.

B. Fish being smarter than we thought.

C. How fish improve their memory.

D. What we can learn from fish.

2.According to the article, people used to believe that _______.

A. fish could only remember part of their past experiences

B. fish could remember things that happened 12 days ago

C. a fish’s memory lasted for only seven minutes

D. fish didn’t recognize any of their friends

3.How can fish benefit most from a good memory? They can remember _______.

A. where to get food and survive

B. their enemies and fight

C. where to escape to when in danger

D. their friends and help each other

4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Fish behave aggressively in a fight.

B. Fish can remember more.

C. Fish don’t belong to the list of smart animals.

D. Only African cichlids have a good memory.

The Pathfinder

When we found him, he was a sorry sight. His clothes were torn, his hands bleeding. Before we reached him, we saw him fall. He lay a moment. Then he pulled himself to his feet, walked unsteadily a few yards through the woods and fell again.

After we got him out, we went back to find the gun that he had thrown down. His tracks showed that for two days he had circled in the forest, within 200 yards of the road. His senses were so dulled by fear and tiredness that he did not hear the cars going by or see the lights at night.

We found him just in time.

This man, like others before him, had simply been frightened when he knew he was lost. What had been a near disaster might have turned out as only a pleasant walk, had he made a few preparations before he stepped from the highway or off a known path.

Whatever sense of direction that a man may have, it’s still largely a question of observation. A skilled woodsman always keeps an eye on his surroundings. He notes that the shape of a mountain, the direction water flows through a swamp, and the way a tree leans across a path. With these in mind, he may be turned around many times, but he is seldom lost.

There are exceptions, of course, and once in a while a man does come across some strange problem that puts him into the “lost” situation. A rainstorm or sudden blizzard may catch him without a compass (指南针) in his pocket. Darkness may find him in a rough area, where travel is dangerous without a light.

When this happens, the normal first reaction (反应) is the fear of being laughed at as a result of his poor knowledge in the woods. He may also be concerned about the inconvenience that he will cause his friends when he doesn’t show up. This false pride may lead him to keep on the move in a false effort to find his way against all difficulties.

The person who thinks ahead is seldom in great danger. He’ll be safe if he observes carefully, thinks ahead, and remains calm.

1.The author suggested that if the man had not been found, he would have ________.

A. been shot by a gunB. become confused

C. been attacked by wild animalsD. been in great danger

2.According to the passage, if a person gets lost in the forest, at the very beginning, he would _______.

A. worry about being laughed at

B. push himself to find his way out

C. feel it is convenient to ask for help from his friends

D. be concerned about being frightened by wild animals

3.When a person tries to find his way in the woods, _________ is the most important.

A. intelligenceB. observation

C. directionD. chance

4.The author tells the story of the lost man as an example of people who _________.

A. go into the woods by themselves

B. don’t know how to signal for help properly

C. are frightened when they think they are lost

D. notice everything when stepping from the highway

Getting enough sleep on a regular basis is one important way to protect the health of your heart. Poor sleep is associated with a range of cardiovascular(心血管的) problems, including high blood pressure, heart attack, and heart failure. Both men and women are at increased risk for these conditions. But we continue to learn that when it comes to health problems associated with sleep, the particular risks to men and women are not always the same. A new study suggests that for women who already have heart disease, poor sleep may be particularly dangerous to their heart health.

Research indicates that poor-quality sleep—and waking too early in particular—is associated with increased inflammation(炎症) among women with heart disease. There was no similar association found for men, suggesting that women with heart disease and sleep problems may be at particular risk for inflammation that can be damaging to the heart.

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco investigated the relationship between sleep quality and inflammation linked to coronary(冠状的) heart disease. They also sought information about how an association between sleep and inflammation might differ between men and women. Their investigation included 980 men and women at first, and 626 completed the 5-year study. All of those included were suffering for coronary heart disease. The average age of men in the study was 66. Women were slightly younger, with an average age of 64. Researchers measured sleep quality by asking participants to rate their sleep over the previous month. They also asked for reports of some of the most common sleep problems, including difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, waking frequently throughout the night, and waking too early in the morning.

After 5 years, researchers repeated tests for inflammation and once again sought reports on sleep quality and sleep problems. When they analyzed data for both men and women together, researchers found no links between inflammations and sleep quality. However, when they analyzed data taking gender(性别) into account, researchers found a relationship between inflammation and sleep existed for women, but not for men.

1.When a person suffers from sleep disorder _______.

A. he/she is sure to have cardiovascular problems

B. he/she may be in a state of poor health

C. he/she must be in danger of heart disease

D. he/she might get on poorly with others

2.What is the purpose of the author in writing the passage?

A. To stress how to have a good sleep in daily life.

B. To show a good sleep is more important to women.

C. To describe different kinds of sleep problems.

D. To encourage readers to sleep more.

3.The researchers did the study _______.

A. to find a cure for women with heart disease

B. to know what contributes to inflammation

C. to look into the relationship between sleep quality and inflammation

D. to track the lifestyle of men and women

4.Which of the following is the suitable title for the passage?

A. Poor Sleep Results in Problems Only for Adults

B. Lack of Sleep Can Lead to Much Inflammation

C. Sleep Loss Is to Increase Anxiety Disorders

D. Women’s Sleep Habits May Affect Heart Health
