1. Peter is fond of delicious food and he also wants to have some wonderful tea.

2.Penny likes stocks and she wants to appreciate some world-class musicals as well.

3. Catherine loves reading and she is crazy about Sherlock Holmes.

4. Helen prefers to visit a city which has not only a long history but also modern scenes.

5. Lee is a big fan of water sports and sunshine.

A.FROM a skyline featuring both minarets(尖塔) and church spires to the call to prayer competing with music in a hip cafe, Istanbul is the only major city to span two continents. While it is known for sights dating back thousands of years, it also has a fascinating, and often ignored, modern scene that is finally receiving international attention. As a 2010 European Capital of Culture, the city is showcasing local artists in both historic areas and new museums — yet another example of how Istanbul is among the world’s most visually exciting cities.

B.WUHOU temple and surrounding areas are interesting and fun to walk through. It's worth spending time in a tea house, perhaps one in Renmin Park, because Chengdu's tea culture is worth experiencing. Chun Xi Lu, with its fluorescent lights and frenetic shoppers, is a good place to see the more modern China, especially at night. But the real attraction in Chengdu, and in Sichuan in general, is often the food. The hotpot, while not as spicy as in Chongqing, is worth trying. It is the same with chao shou, or dumplings. Maybe you should head over to the restaurant section right now.

C.SUNNY, fashion-forward, Sydney is an energetic city bent on making its mark. Sydney in particular is graced with wonderful weather most of the year. Many people are water sports fanatics and can be found on any given day enjoying the beautiful weather on the bay. Sports like surfing are being celebrated in their national birthplace. Boating or Sailing is another great way to enjoy the magnificent weather that Sydney offers most of the year.

    D. THERE are many different Londons, and they appeal to people with many different passions: museum lovers, theatergoers, devotees of royalty, people who like to walk in the rain. But richest of all, perhaps, is the London for book lovers. Because the city is the star and the backdrop of so much great literature, it is possible to believe you know it intimately(亲切的)— how it looks, how it feels — without ever leaving your home country, or indeed your home. But it is better to visit, if only for the joy of seeing the landscape of your imagination come to life. How thrilling it is to wander along Baker Street, where Sherlock Holmes once fictionally solved the unsolvable!

    E. CAIRO is third world and first world, Islamic world, a city that jars all the senses, all at once. There are thousands of years of history in this city of 18 million people, and that history can be seen in the people themselves: the seller peddling his beans from a decorated cart, the felucca (a traditional wooden sailing boat) captain guiding his sailboat through the murky Nile, the young man riding a bicycle through traffic with a ladder-sized tray of bread balanced on his head. Come prepared: a scarf for women to enter mosques; packets of tissues for bathroom stops; small bills for tips; and if you like to drink, a bottle or two of wine from the duty-free airport shop. Cairo has a lot to offer, but a good bottle of wine is not included.

    F. MANY districts and landmarks in New York have become well- known to outsiders. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Broadway theater district is a major center of the world's entertainment industry. Anchored by Wall Street, in Lower Manhattan, New York vies with London as the financial capital of the world and is home to the New York Stock Exchange, the world's largest stock exchange by market capitalization of its listed companies. The original Manhattan Chinatown attracts a flood of tourists to its busy sidewalks and retail establishments.

Many of us have heard of the saying: everything is possible if you can just believe. But few of us really know the power of faith and perseverance(坚定).  South African swimmer Natalie du Tiot embodies(体现)those virtues.

Du Tiot, 24, became the first swimmer to compete in both the Olympic Games and the Paralympics (残奥会)in Beijing. Although she finished 16th in the tough 10km marathon in the able-bodied Games, she has collected three golds in the Paralympics so far.

One of the most successful disabled athletes of all time, Natalie du Tiot was already a promising swimmer when she lost her leg in a motorcycle accident in 2001, at just 17.

“There are a lot of dark moments,” she said, “There are some days when I cry. But I try to remember that better days are ahead. You just go on.”

Within a few months, she was back in the swimming pool.

She still completes and still succeeds. The only difference is she has switched to longer events—from 200m and 400m individual medley to 800m and 1,500m freestyle—to make up for her loss of speed with only one leg. But she made no adjustment to her mental look(精神面貌).

“Going out in the water, it feels as if there’s nothing wrong with me. It doesn’t matter if you look different. You’re still the same as everybody else because you have the same dream.”

She is the owner of many world records, and she also won gold when competing against able-bodied swimmers in the 1,500m freestyle at the All African Games in 2007.

But there is no magic recipe(秘诀) for success. It all comes down to hard work and determination. “She is stubborn, which is good and bad,” said her coach Karoly Von Toros. “Good for the swimming, but bad for the coach.”

There is a poem that hangs on her wall that reads:

The tragedy (悲剧)of life does not lie in not reaching your goals;

The tragedy of life lies in not having goals to reach for.

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraphThere is one extra heading which you do not need.

A.Causes of overusing fluoride

B.Negative effects of fluoride

C.Safe use of fluoride

D.The expert’s background information

E.No need to worry about fluoride poisoning

F.Solutions to improper use of fluoride

I have heard that fluoride can help stop dental decay, but I recently read that it is poisonousWhich of these is true? How can children use fluoride safely?

1.

This question is answered by Dr Marcia M.Rich who practises general dentistry in Newholt. She is also a lecturer at the University and a writer for the monthly magazine Your Dentist Cares

2.

My answer to the first question is to stress that fluoride works well and is safe when users follow instructions.Young children have a tendency to swallow toothpaste, which is why they should only have a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste on their toothbrush. If this simple measure is taken, parents can be confident that children will be protected against tooth decay, and come to no harm.

3.

Almost all medicines have an adverse effect-or even be deadly-if they are not taken as directed. So you are right-fluoride can be poisonous if it is swallowed in very large quantities. It is for the reason that fluoride supplements can only be obtained on prescription from the doctor or dentist. Please be assured that fluoride overdoses are rare-in fact, I have never heard of any fatal incidents related to fluoride poisoning.

4.

Scientific studies have shown that fluoride can help to prevent cavities as long as it is used correctly. If fluoride is abused, there is a risk of illness or even deaths in extreme cases. If a deadly amount of fluoride is taken, immediate first-aid could save a life.A person who has swallowed a large amount of fluoride will probably start vomiting. If not, the patient should be given milk or antacid and taken to the nearest hospital for emergency treatment.

5.

Taking too much fluoride while teeth are growing can lead to a condition called dental fluorosis. The most likely cause is the swallowing of fluoride toothpastes by young children. It can also be caused by inappropriate use of fluoride drop or other fluoride supplements, for example when fluoride is already is already present in drinking water.

Economists usually study markets. Now,two Americans have won the Nobel Prize in economics for not studying markets. They will share almost one and a half million dollars for their analysis of economic governance(治理).The winners are Elinor Ostrom of Indiana University in Bloomington and Oliver Williamson of the University of California,Berkeley. The prize in economic sciences has gone to 63 men since it was first awarded 40 years ago.Elinor Ostrom is the first woman. And,like other winners over the years, her training is not limited to economics. She is a professor of political science and of public and environmental affairs.

Today, economic theory suggests that good resource management requires ownership, either private or public. If not,the thinking goes, then self-interest will lead to overuse and destruction of shared resources.Ecologist Garrett Hardin described this idea in 1968 as“the tragedy of the commons.”

Elinor Ostrom showed how local decision making can lessen the tragedy. Her research has deepened understanding of how people balance their needs with those of others who depend on the same resources.

She studied communities like farmers in Southern  California who depended on a common water supply. She documented how people who use resources often develop ways to share them. One example is forest management. She says,“One of the absolutely key, most important variables(变量)as to

whether or not a forest survives and continues is whether local people monitor each other and its use.Not officials, locals.”

Oliver Williamson has studied big companies and found that they often are better than markets at doing complex jobs.Under his theory, businesses act as structures for conflict resolution.

For example, companies that own their suppliers can avoid long-term contracts and disputes over prices. This can make production more efficient and make better use of limited resources. But businesses can also abuse their power.Professor Williamson says the best way to deal with this is not by limiting the size of companies, but through industry regulation.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said economists need to do more than study markets and prices. The Nobel judges urged more research like the kind they recognized with this year’s award.

60.According to Elinor Ostrom,                 .

A.the tragedy of the commons is caused by local decision

B.private ownership can cause the tragedy of the commons

C.overuse of shared resources can cause the tragedy of the commons

D.it is not the officials but the local people who can do something to avoid the tragedy

61.This year’s Nobel Prize for economics is shared by         .

A.Elinor Ostrom and Oliver Williamson   B.Elinor Ostrom and Garrett Hardin

C.Oliver Williamson and Garrett Hardin   D.63 economic scientists

62.Professor Williamson proved that long-term contracts and disputes over prices can be

avoided by big companies by                   .

A.1imiting the size of other companies

      B.providing sufficient production

C.sharing resources with their own suppliers

D.setting up their own industry regulation

63.Which of the following can serve as the best title for the passage?

A.Two American Economists Won the Nobel Prize for Studying Markets.

B.Researchers of Economic Governance Won the Nobel Prize for Economics.

C.First Woman to Win the Nobel Prize for Economic Strategies.

D.The Tragedy of the Commons and the Big Businesses.
