Like many people you may be dreaming of a career as a rock and roll star. There are two ways to go about getting one.First there is the traditional(传统的)way.Find some friends and form a group.Learn to play the guitar or the drums.Write your own songs.Spend hours arguing about the band name.then go out on the road.

The next step is to spend a year or two touring. If you are any good, the crowds will get bigger. In the end an artist from a record(唱片)company may come to a show.If he or she likes you, there may be a deal(交易).This is the path traditionally followed by bands in the music industry.Success means fame and wealth. And failure gives you some interesting stories to tell your children.

Over the last few years a different path to success has become known.Boy bands like Boyzone and girl bands like Spice Girls don't come together on their own. They are created by managers and record companies.Their image(形象)is strictly controlled.Professional(专业)song writers usually write their music. This is a convenient arrangement(安排)and the public seems to love the result.

Though boy and girl bands have become very popular recently, there is a long tradition of making music in this way.In the early 1960's an American businessman called Berry Gordy founded Motown Records.Motown is short for “motor town”.The record company was based in the city of Detroit, where thousands of African-Americans had moved to work in the car industry. They brought with them a cultural tradition of writing and performing music. This style later became known as “soul music”.Berry Gordy was a diamond miner.Motown stars were not just given songs to sing. They were also taught how to dress well and speak properly.

If you ever felt like your doctor was trying to push you out of the examination room before you had a chance to explain your condition, you are not alone.

A new study from the Mayo Clinic shows that most people agree on what makes a good doctor and it definitely isn’t one who hurries through a visit.

A doctor’s skills can affect a patient’s emotional response and recovery very positively or very negatively, a research shows.Based on the new study, which surveyed 192 patients, it can be concluded that a model doctor should be confident, sympathetic, kind, personal forthright, respectful and thorough.

“What every patient wants is a doctor who pays them personal attention,”said James Li, a doctor at the Mayo Clinic Division of Allergic Diseases.Li is helping to develop programs for teaching doctors how to strengthen their interactions(互动)with patients.

“It’s really the duty of the medical community to design a health care system, so that doctors are able to exhibit those qualities for the good of the patients,”he said.

Many patients nowadays are directed to urgent care facilities or, for lack of good insurance, forced to go to emergency rooms for problems that used to be handled right away.In either case, wait time can be hours and actual face time with a doctor might be just seconds.

“The days when doctors remembered their patients’ names might no longer exit, but medical schools can fill in this crack by incorporating the seven behavioral things into their training,”Li said.

“If patients have opportunities to tell their stories, to be asked questions and have the doctors describe understanding of what has been shared, it leaves them feeling like they’re heard.”Li said.

While everyone knows that NBA center Yao Ming will become a father this summer, the big buzz(流言)in China is about whether the baby will be an American.

The Shanghai native's personal life is closely followed by his many fans at home, from his 2007 Shanghai wedding to fellow basketball player Ye Li to last month's reports the couple is expecting a baby girl in July.

The 2.25-meter star, sidelined this season with a broken left foot, recently returned to the USA with Ye, encouraging speculation that the baby will be born there.

Yao's baby would automatically be an American citizen if born in the US.

However, Chinese law does not recognize double citizenship.

A few say it would be a betrayal of China and that the Chinese team could be denied a future basketball star.

But most support Yao and don't care which country claims the baby.

“Yao Ming is individual, not a political tool,”said one comment on popular basketball Website Hoop China.

“He has the right to choose where his child is born and what kind of medical care and education will be available to her.His child's citizenship has nothing to do with loyalty.”

Some of the planet's most precious animals and plants are disappearing, according to the World Conservation Union(IUCN).The group, based in Switzerland, works with governments and experts to protect threatened species. On September 12, the IUCN released its Red List, a list of species at greatest risk of extinction.

The list includes 41,415 animals and plants. The IUCN says that habitat destruction, hunting and other causes threaten one in four mammals, one in eight birds and one in three amphibians(两栖动物).

  Who is to blame?

Scientists believe that 99 percent of threatened species are at risk because of human activity.“We are losing animals and plants at a high rate,” says Julia Marton-LefEevre, director general of the IUCN.“We need to change our behavior.” Warmer oceans and over-fishing are changing sea life. This year for the first time corals(珊瑚)made their appearance on the list. The gharial, a crocodile living in India and Nepal, has lost almost 60 percent of its population in the last 10 years. It is a victim(受害者)of habitat destruction.

Still, the news is not all bad. Thanks to efforts made to protect it, the Mauritius echo parakeet, a bird once endangered, has seen an increase in its population.“This shows that protection methods can work,” says Marton-LefEevre.“That's the message we want to send to young people.”

In China the new reserve(保护区)itself is part of green efforts that have seen more than 2,400 nature reserves of various kinds being set up, covering more than 15 percent of the nation's land area, official figures showed.

"The country's natural resources(资源)have benefited from conservation," said Lei Guangchun, director of the nature reserve department of Beijing Forestry University."It is a big increase nowadays compared with other countries." Lei said.

The total areas of China's natural reserves have covered 1.38 million km2, which accounts for 15.4% of China's area, higher than both the world average(平均水平)of 11% and the rate in most developed countries.

Li Zhong, an official in charge of the nature reserves office with the State Forestry Administration, thought it was important to increase investment(投资)in such reserves at all levels.
