15.A wood fire can be handy when you're camping. You can roast marshmallows or stay warm, for example.Forest fires that rage out of control, however, are a big problem.
Wildfires cause hundreds of millions of dollars in damage every year. And the amount of destruction has grown over the last 2 decades, especially in the western United States.
To understand better why the northern Rocky Mountains region has been hit especially hard by wildfires, scientists from the University of Arizona in Tucson looked at weather, snow, and fire records from 1970 to 2003.^
Their study showed that, between 1987 and 2003,fires burned an area 6.5 times larger than the area burned between 1970 and 1986.The fire season also started earlier-,and its average length increased by 78 days.
Warmer spring and summer temperatures appear to be part of the explanation for this change. The average temperature in the study's more recent period was 0.871 higher than it was in the earlier period. And this trend is likely to continue.Experts predict that average summer temperatures may rise between 2¾and 5¾by the year 2050 in western North America.‘
Hie timing of snowmelt appears to be another cause of the fire boom. When snow melts early in the season, forests become drier through the summer and catch fire and burn more easily.Western snow packs now typically melt a week to a month earlier than they did 50 years ago, according to recent studies.
Some people have blamed the growing fire risk on policies that allow bush and branches to build up on forest floors. But clearing bush by itself won't help much if changes in climate are largely responsible for increasingly severe forest fires.
43.The main purpose of studying the records from 1970 to 2003 was toD.

C.the fire season between 1987 and 2003 was longer than that between 1970 and 1986
D.the average summer temperature will be I9C and 5¾higher by 2050 than it is now

6.An"apple polisher"is one who gives gifts to win friendship or special treatment.It is not exactly a bribe(贿赂),but is close to it.
All sorts of people are apple polishers,including politicians and people in high offices-just about everybody.Oliver Cromwell,the great English leader,offered many gifts to win the support of George Fox and his party,but failed.
There are other phrases meaning the same thing as"apple-polishing"-"soft-soaping"or"buttering-up".A gift is just one way to"soft-soap"somebody,or to"butter him up".Another that is just as effective is flattery,giving someone high praise-telling him how good he looks,or how well he speaks,or how talented and wise he is.
Endless are the ways of flattery.Who does not love to hear it?Only an unusual man can resist the thrill of being told how wonderful he is.In truth,flattery is good medicine for most of us,who get so little of it.
We need it to be more sure of ourselves.It cannot hurt unless we get carried away by it.But if we just lap it up for its food value and nourishment,as a cat laps up milk,then we can still remain true to ourselves.
Sometimes,however,flattery will get you nothing from one who has had too much of it.A good example is the famous 12th century legend of King Canute of Denmark and England.The king got tired of listening to endless sickening flattery of his courtiers(朝臣).They overpraised him to the skies,as a man of limitless might.
He decided to teach them a lesson.He took them to the seashore and sat down.Then he ordered the waves to stop coming in.The tide was too busy to listen to him.The king was satisfied.This might show his followers how weak his power was and how empty their flattery.

41.Which of the following activities has nothing to do with"apple-polishing"?D
A.A boy tells his girlfriend how pretty she looks.
B.An employee tells her boss how good he is at management.
C.A knight is said to be of limitless power by his followers.
D.A teacher praises her students for their talent and wisdom.
42.What does the writer want to prove with Cromwell's example?A
A.Everybody can be an apple-polisher.
B.Cromwell was not a good apple-polisher.
C.George Fox and his party were not apple-polishers.
D.There are people who don't like being apple-polished.
43.Which of the following statements about flattery is true according to the author?D
A.Too much flattery can carry us away.
B.Flattery is too empty to do people any good.
C.Flattery can get you nothing but excessive(过度的) pride.
D.Flattery is one of the ways to apple-polish people.
44.Why did King Canute of Denmark and England take his followers to the seashore?B
A.Because he was sick of his normal life.
B.Because he disliked being overpraised any more.
C.Because he wanted them to realize how wise he was.
D.Because he wanted them to see how weak he was as a king.
45.Who does the author think that flattery can do good to?B
A.Those who are politicians or in high offices.

3.There are many reasons why fast food has become so popular all over the world.Some think that fast food is such a hugely profitable business-and obviously people enjoy eating it,but the popularity of fast food has increased as our lifestyles have changed over the years.
The social landscape has changed immeasurably since fast food appeared in the second half of (lie 20th century.Back then,mums mostly stayed at home with the kids.Dads went to work,and they all got a healthy home-cooked meal at the end of the day.The lifestyle was slower.In this age,some mums still stay at home,but many are out at work,and some are single parents.If both parents are at work,they are often content just to throw something into the oven or the microwave,because after a hard and busy day,people don't have the time to create a meal-or at least they think they don't.
Fast food isn't just limited to eating out and ordering in-it'S now so easy to get a ready meal from the supermarket.You can pick up any kind of food you can think of at most supermarkets-Chinese,Italian,Japanese or Thai.There are healthy lifestyle options,but most people,unless they are on a specific diet,tend to be seduced(引诱)by the images they see on the packaging,and the description of the meal inside.
The proportion of single households has increased greatly since fast food was invented.While families might make an effort to eat together and eat fresh,home-cooked food,the single lifestyle doesn't often allow for this.Many people who live alone simply can't be bothered to make a big effort to cook for themselves.Some don't know how to.
It will take a major shift in lifestyle and cooking ability to lessen the hold that junk food has over the population and replace it with good home cooking.

68.According to the author,what's the most probable reason why fast food has become so popular?A
A.People's lifestyles have changed.
B.Fast food makes people's life easy and convenient.
C.Businessmen can make big profit from selling fast food.
D.People don,t have the time to create a meal after a hard and busy day at work.
69.What was the life like in the first half of the 20th century?D
A.Fast food was somewhere to be found. B.People knew a little about fast food.
C.Things were cheap but life was hard. D.Most family ate a mum-cooked meal at home.
70.What might be the author's attitude towards the future of"home-cooked food"?B
A.Negative. B.Optimistic. C.Uncertain. D.Not mentioned.

A study into how lazy British people are has found more than half of adults prefer to catch the lift rather than climb two flights of stairs.
Just over 2000people were quizzed by independent researchers at Nuffield Health,Britain's largest health charity.The results were very astonishing.
About one in six people surveyed (调查) said if their remote control was broken, they would continue watching the same channel rather than get up.
More than one third of those questioned said they would not run to catch a bus.Worryingly,of the 654respondents with children,64% said they were often too tired to play with them.

The results cause serious challenges for the National Health Service,where obesity-related illnesses such as heart disease and cancer have been on a steady increase for the past 40years and are costing billions of pounds every year.

7.Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a booklover or merely go there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower.
Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. The desire to pick up a book with an attractive dust-jacketis irresistible, although this method of selection ought not to be followed,as you might end up with a rather dull book. You soon become absorbed in some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent far too much time there and must dash off to keep some forgotten appointment-without buying a book,of course.
This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is,I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. There are not many places where it is possible to do this.A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can wander round such places to your heart's content. If it is a good shop,no assistant will approach you with the unavoidable greeting:"Can I help you, sir?"You needn't buy anything you don't want.In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finis hed browsing. Then, and only then, are his services necessary.Of course, you may want to find out where a particular sec tion is,but when he has led you there, the assistant should retire considerately and look as if he is not interested in se lling a single book.
You have to be careful not to be attracted by the variety of books in a bookshop. It is very easy to enter the shop looking for a book on,say ancient coins and to come out carrying a copy of the latest bestselling novel and perhaps a book about brass-rubbing--something which had only slightly interested you up till then. This volume on the subject, however, happened to be so well illustrated and the part of the text you read proved so interesting that you just had to buy it.This sort of thing can be very dangerous.Apart from running up a huge account, you can waste a great deal of time wandering from section to section.

While household robots today do the normal housework,social robots will be much more like companions than mere tools.For example,these robots will be able to distinguish when someone is happy or sad.This allows them to respond more appropriately to the user.
The Jibo robot,arranged to ship later this year,is designed to be a personalized assistant.You can talk to the robot,ask it questions,and make requests for it to perform different tasks.The robot doesn't just deliver general answers to questions; it responds based on what it learns about each individual in the household.It can do things such as reminding an elderly family member to take medicine or taking family photos.

3.Not a day goes by when we don't use the World Wide Web.Today it has become almost as important to every family as food and water!This year,the World Wide Web has turned 25years old.What many people don't know is that the web was at first created to improve communication between thousands of scientists in Switzerland.
In 1989,Tim Berners-Lee was a 34-year-old British physicist working as a software(软件)engineer at CERN,the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Switzerland.Since CERE was a huge organization with thousands of scientists,communication between them was becoming increasingly difficult.
Berners-Lee wanted to develop a system to solve the problem.His paper suggested an information system,where a page on one computer could have a link to another page on another computer ( connected through the Internet) allowing scientists to read lots of information quickly.However,Berners-Lee's boss said that it sounded exciting but impossible.
Even though there were many difficulties and few supporters,Berners-Lee went on to develop the World Wide Web.He came up with ideas such as Hyper-text Transfer Protocol(超文本传输协议)to allow computers to talk to each other,Hyper-text Markup Language (HTML) to create the pages,a server to serve the pages,and a browser(浏览器)to see them.
In December 1990,the World Wide Web was demonstrated(展示)and in 1991,the WWW project was made public,so that other programmers could develop their own browsers.Berners-Lee believed that it could be used for more than scientific purposes.He wanted the Internet to be easy for anyone to use-a free open software.His wishes soon came true.
Although the World Wide Web has today turned into a completely different thing from what it meant at first,it has become necessary and important to our lives, powering our mobile technologies and the way we get information.
