I had the meanest mother in the whole world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have porridge, eggs or toast. When others had Cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwich. But at least I wasn’t alone when I was sad. My sister and two brothers had the same mean(刻薄的) mother as I did.

My mother preferred to know where we were all the time. She had to know who our friends were and where we were going. We had to clean clothes and take a bath every day. The other kids got to wear the same clothes for days. We could not lie in bed “sick” in order to miss school.

The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by nine each night and get up at eight the next morning. We couldn’t sleep till noon like our friends. So while they slept, my mother was brave to break the Child Labour Law. She made us work. We had to wash dishes, make beds, and learn to cook and all sorts of things at home. I believe she lay awake thinking up all things for us to do.

My mother was a complete failure as a mother. Two of her children received higher education. None of us have ever been arrested (taken away by the police) or divorced. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults. I am trying to raise my three children this way. I am filled with pride when my children call me “mean”. Why? Because now I thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the world.

1.How many children does the writer’s mother have?

A.Four B.Two C.Three D.Six

2.What can you infer(推测) from the passage?

A.My family was rich, so I ate a sandwich for lunch.

B.My mother was a great success. We love her.

C.If we didn’t want to go to school, the best way was to pretend to be sick.

D.We needn’t share the housework at home.

3.The best title for this passage may be________.

A.My childhood B.The meanest mother

C.I do as my mother did D.Unforgettable memories

How can we all get more laughter into our lives? Here is what the experts suggest:

1. . Nancy Alguire, a teacher in Clifton Park, N. Y., was once painfully shy and had a hard time laughing. Then she married a circus clown (小丑). “I became interested in the clowns,” she recalls “One day I put on a costume and paint my face. That afternoon my whole life changed. I learned to laugh and enjoy life in a way I had never done before.” 2. To this day, she still makes it a rule to be with people who enjoy life and laughing.

3. It doesn’t take you too much time and can be easy. Collect favorite cartoons and jokes. Also, keep a paper for writing down humor you find in everyday life. “Good ideas come and go fast, you have to capture them quickly or they are gone,” says Virginia Tooper.

Laugh when you need it most. “ 4. ” says comedian Bill Cosby. “And once you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be, you can survive it,” he insists.

Gray Alan, a sociology professor at the University of Minnesota, claims that laughter is a skill we can all gain--because it comes naturally. 5. . Just remember: we are just here for a period, so get a few laughs.

Tips for Being a Good Neighbor

1. _______________

No one likes a noisy neighbor. Do you hold parties that last all night? Do you leave your dog outside to bark all day? Remember that not everyone has the same schedule as you do, so use some common sense. Keep noise to the lowest level. If you’re holding a party that’s likely to be loud, invite everyone within earshot.

2.________________

Once you know your neighbors, then you’ll also know if something seems out of place in the neighborhood. Are strange people carrying expensive things out of one neighbor’s house? Have several days passed since your elderly neighbor last collected his newspaper? The benefit of keeping an eye out for unusual behavior in the neighborhood is that others will do the same for you.

3.________________

It never hurts to follow the Golden Rule: Do to others what you would like them to do to you. Treat your neighbors with respect. Offer to drive an elderly neighbor to the grocery store. Volunteer to collect mail while a neighbor is on vacation. The more often you lend a helping hand, the more likely that your neighbors will do the same for you when you need a little help.

4.________________

Don’t just limit your neighborly actions to your block or street. Remember that everyone who lives in a community has the ability to help make it a better place. Think about your passion and find a way to do it on a volunteer basis in your town. Volunteer at the local library. Enjoy working with kids. Consider becoming a scout leader. Whatever your passion is, there’s sure to be a thing suitable for you to help in the local community.
