A Love Note To My Mom
When I was a little girl, I would often accompany you as you modeled for fashion photographers. It was years later that I finally understood what role modelling  36 in your life. Little did I know you were  37 every penny you earned to go to  38  school.
I cannot thank you enough for  39 you told me one autumn afternoon when I was nine. After finishing my homework, I went into the dining room where you were buried  40  piles of law books. I was  41  .Why were you doing what I do—memorizing textbooks and studying for  42  ? When you said you were in law school, I was more puzzled. I didn’t know. Moms could be lawyers too. You smiled and said, “In life, you can do anything you want to do.”
As young as I was, that statement kept  43 in my ears. I watched as you faced the  44 of completing your studies, starting companies with Dad, while still being a  45 and a Mom with five kids. I was exhausted just watching you in action. With your words of wisdom in my youthful mind, I suddenly felt unlimited freedom to dream. My whole world  46 . I set out to live my life filled with        47  , seeing endless possibilities for personal and professional achievements.
Your words became my motto. I constantly found myself in the unique position of being either the first (woman doctor in Maryland Rotary) or one of the few women (chief medical reporters) in my field. I gained strength every time I said , “Yes, I’ll try that.”
Encouraged by your  48 , I have forged ahead (毅然前行) with my life’s journey, less afraid to make mistakes, and  49 meeting each challenge. You did it, and now I’m  50 it. So, get to run. So much to do, so many dreams to live.

小题1:B 多年之后作者终于明白了当模特在妈妈的生活中起着怎样的作用。由空前的what role可知此处应用动词played与之搭配,构成短语play a role in,含义是“起作用,扮演角色”。故选B项。
小题1:A save“节省”;make“挣得,制作”;donate“捐赠”;receive“收到,得到”。由空后的every penny you earned可知此处应用saving表示“节省你挣的每一个便士”。故选A项。
小题1:C 由第二段第22个空后的you were in law school可知,此处应用law表示“上法律学校”。故选C项。

It was getting dark and snow was coming down. Joe was driving home. He'd been unemployed since the factory closed. Most of his friends had left, but he stayed on. After all, he was born here. Suddenly he saw a lady standing on the side of the road and then he pulled up. She was worried. No one had stopped to help her. Was he going to hurt her? He looked poor and hungry. Joe knew how she felt and said, “My name is Joe and I'm here to help you.” All she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Joe changed the tire, but he got dirty and his hands were hurt.
She wanted to pay Joe and said any amount would have been all right. Joe never thought twice about the money and there were plenty who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance that they needed. Later the lady went in a small restaurant to take a bite to eat. The cash register was like the telephone of an out-of-work actor-it didn't ring much. The waitress, who was nearly eight months pregnant (怀孕) brought a clean towel to her with a sweet smile. The old lady remembered Joe. After the waitress brought the change from a 100-dollar bill, she found the lady gone and something written on a piece of paper “Someone once helped me out-the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, don't let the chain of love end with you.” That night the waitress gave her sleeping husband a soft kiss and whispered, “Everything's going to be all right. I learned about life from an ant farm. When I was seven years old, my family created one.First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box, and then we waited for the live ants to arrive.Shortly after the chilly ants were dropped into the glass structure, they got to work making tunnels.I was amazed that each one knew exactly what to do.After hours of staring, I realized that the ants had assigned jobs. With my mom ' s help, I kept a diary of what happened each day and named the ants.
One day a tragedy struck the ant farm. The pages of the diary, still wrinkled where tear drops fell, indicate the depth of the tragedy.'I had put my face so close to the structure that I accidentally tipped it over, caving in all the tunnels.Although the ants survived their earthquake, one by one they began to die.I was terrified as I watched them give up their tunnel-building to carry the bodies to a comer of the farm.My mother reported that the ants were dying of "frustration." They simply could not stand the reality that their tunnels had been destroyed.
Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm.Mom had hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more.Over the years, I came to realize the ants were a study in the benefits of teamwork.Working together, they were able to create an amazing world for themselves.I also learned that they should be admired for their hard work.Day in and day out, each labored at their task. The ant farm showed that teamwork and perseverance are indeed two key ingredients to success. But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity (不幸、灾祸) is a natural part of life, and must be accepted.Unlike the ants, humans cannot give up when they face disappointment.Unlike the ants, we have to realize that if a tunnel caves in, we just have to build another.Giving up, I say, is not a choice.

My friend John always has something to tell me. He knows so much that   21  men have to have older and more worldly wise men to tell them,   22 , who to trust, how to care for others and how to live life    23    the fullest.
Recently, John lost his    24    Janet. For eight years she fought against cancer, but in the end her sickness had the last    25 . One day John took out a folded piece of   26   from his wallet. He had found it, so he told me, when he     27   up some drawers at home.
It was a    28    love letter Janet had written. The note could look like a school girl’s scrawls(潦草地写,乱涂) about her dream guy.    29   the letter was written by a woman who had had seven children, a woman who fought for her life and who    30   only had a few months left to live.
It was    31   a beautiful recipe (处方,食谱) for how to keep a marriage together. Janet’s    32 of her husband begins like this, “Loved me. Took care of me. Worried about me.”
“Helped me when I was ill.” The next    33   reads. After that she turned    34  the paper and added “Warmth. Humor. Kindness. Thoughtfulness.” And then she writes about the husband she has    35   with and loved most in her life. “  36 there when I needed you.” The last words she wrote   37  all the others. I can see her for me when she added thoughtfully “Good friend.”
I stand beside John now, and cannot pretend to know how it feels to lose someone who is as close to   38  as Janet was to him. I need to   39  what he has to say much more than he needs to talk.
“John,” I ask. “How do you stick together with someone through 38 years—not to mention the sickness? How do I know     40    I can bear to stand by my wife’s side if she becomes sick one day?”
“You can.” he says quietly, “ If you love her enough, you can.”

The rumors had been spreading for months but it still came as a shock when the hospital would be closing. It had served this poor neighborhood for nearly 100 years but it would close because of the health care crisis.
The day after the announcement co-workers found out that pretzels(椒盐饼干) had been eliminated. Soft pretzels are the lifeblood of this city. So losing access to soft pretzels is no small matter.
I said, “I only have $6. I’m not sure how many pretzels I need. You see, I work at a hospital and it’s closing and they stopped selling pretzels.” The man’s smile disappeared. “What hospital?” “Oh, Northeastern Hospital.”
The guy looked deeply shocked. “I used to sell medical supplies and that was one of my hospitals.” Then he turned around and grabbed a box of 25 pretzels and slid them across the counter.
I was surprised by his generosity and started to reach for my wallet, “Oh I can pay. Please let me …” The guy smiled, “Just tell them Joe Sullivan said to do something nice for someone else.”
And so that day everyone in medical records was treated to a soft pretzel. Word spread fast as people came asking, “Is it really true?” It was as if I’d carried in a box of gold. It mattered to them that a stranger cared.
