I heard a shotgun blast.I must have been hit because I was down and felt it in my stomach.I was lying on the ground of a parking a lot in the dark, scared, hurt and alone, not knowing if I would live or die.It seemed so real, ever thought it was a dream.

This dream, after my father’s death, help me understand the shock and physical hurt I was going through.I bad never experienced the loss of someone I loved. It was as if a part of me had died.

I soon began to receive and experience the incredible healing(康复)power of love.It was an honest outpouring from the people who surrounded me,wrote letters and called. One expression of sympathy I will always remember came from my friend Diana who lost her mother to cancer when she was a teenager.Soon after we returned home from Dad’s funeral there was a knock at the door. There Diana stood holding the most beautiful bouquet of flower. She put her hand over her heart and said two words,“My mother.”We didn’t need to talk.I knew she was telling me about the love she lives on. She knew how I was feeling and wanted to share this time with me.

During this time,my tears would come as easily as the memories of Dad.I believe tears are like holy water. They flow from the well of our hearts, where we hold our feelings.I stayed with my sadness.I shared it with others and received great comfort because they too had sadness.

My mother said she gardened with her grief. Her yard was never more beautiful than the year my father died.I have learned that our sadness ennobles us as humans. It means we have loved deeply. It is this love that will never die.I wrote about this in a poem the summer after my Dad died.

MY  FATHER

I think I am letting him go.

It is not that my love is diminished

or that I miss him less.

It is only that the sun is up

and there is no milk

in the refrigerator

and the bunny got out

of the cage

And is eating my red geraniums.

I think I can letting him go.

But sometimes at night

Before I go to sleep

I fill the tears

fill up my eyes

and run down my cheeks.

I do not think I will ever

let  him go.

but he gone.

Last Sunday I saw a worst storm in years. It came sudden and went on for over three hours. After lunch, I went into my room to have a rest. The air was hotter, and all is quiet. Then a strong wind started to blow into my room. Pieces of paper on my desk flew high into the air and some flew out the open window. As I ran out to catch them, big drop of rain began to fall. When I came back into house, it was raining harder and harder. I tried very hard to close the window. Then I heard a loudly crashing sound from the back of the house. When I ran out of my room to find out what had happened: a big tree had fallen down and broke the top of the backroom.

Linda Evans was my best friend—like the sister I never had. We did everything together: piano lessons, movies, swimming, horseback riding.

When I was 13, my family moved away. Linda and I kept in touch through letters, and we saw each other on special time—like my wedding (婚礼) and Linda’s. Soon we were busy with children and moving to new homes, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent came back, stamped “Address (地址) Unknown. ” I had no idea how to find Linda.

Over the years, I missed Linda very much. I wanted to share (分享) happiness of my children and then grandchildren. And I needed to share my sadness when my brother and then mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Linda could fill.

One day I was reading a newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked very much like Linda and whose last name was Wagman — Linda’s married name. “There must be thousands of Wagmans,” I thought, but I still wrote to her.

She called as soon as she got my letter. “Mrs Tobin!” she said excitedly, “Linda Evans Wagman is my mother. ”

Minutes later I heard a voice that I knew very much, even after 40 years, laughed and cried and caught up on each other’s lives. Now the empty place in my heart is filled. And there’s one thing that Linda and I know for sure: We won’t lose each other again!

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to play the character of Ronald McDonald for the McDonald's Corporation.

One day each month,we visited hospitals bringing a little happiness to the children there. But there were two rules placed on me during a visit. First, I could not go anywhere in the hospital  without permission. And second, I could not physically touch anyone within the hospital. They did not want me to carry germs(细菌)from one patient to another. Breaking either of these rules, I was told, I could lose my job. One day, as I was heading down a hallway and on my way home, I heard a little voice coming through a halfopened door,“Ronald,Ronald.”

I stepped in and saw a boy, about five years old, lying in his dad's arms, Mom with a nurse on the other side. I knew by the feeling in the room that the situation was grave. I asked his name. He told me it was Billy and that I did a few simple magic tricks for him. As I stepped back to say goodbye, he asked me “Ronald, would you hold me?”

At such a simple request, my heart was screaming, “Yes!”But my mind was screaming louder. “No!You are going to lose your job!”

“Hold me” was such a simple request, and yet I searched for any reasonable excuses that allowed me to leave, but none. It took me a moment to realize that in this situation, losing my job may not be the disaster I feared. Then, I picked up this little boy. He was so weak and so scared. We laughed and cried for 45 minutes. With tears in my eyes, I left them. Less than 48 hours later, I received a phone call from Billy's mom that Billy had passed away. She and her husband simply wanted to thank me for making a difference in their little boy's life.

Billy's mom told me shortly after I left the room. Billy looked at her and said, “Momma, I don't care any more if I see Santa this year because I was held by Ronald McDonald.”

For the record, McDonald's Corporation did find it out, but, given the situation, permitted me to go on with my job. I continued as Ronald for another year before leaving the corporation to share the story of Billy and how important it is to take risks.

1. The underlined word “grave” in Paragraph 3 means “________”.

     A. weak     B. serious   C. interesting   D. exciting

2.When Billy asked the author to hold him, at first the author ________.

     A. was unwilling to do so      B. was glad to do so

     C. hesitated to do so          D. hurried to do so

3.What lesson did the author draw from his experience?

     A. To amuse others is enjoyable.       B. To take risks is important.

     C. To break rules is necessary.         D. To be fired is not fearful.

4. We learn from the story that ________.
