Bridge of Hope School is a private school. It was set up in Kalangala about two years ago.  Unlike government schools, which have very large classes of 90 children , many of whom do not want to learn, Bridge has small classes, so pupils get a great deal of attention. Small classes are good for teaching, but the school is always having difficulty with money since private schools are dependent on parents paying on time.

The school has five primary classes and three nursery classes(幼儿班). As the children progress through the school they will add another class next year. The total number of children in the primary is about 50. The parents of Bridge children are often higher earners than those that attend government schools. They want their children to have the best education available.

The school is not yet finished. The classrooms have no windows or doors. But it is very formal and insists on children wearing uniforms(制服).Discipline is strict and the children are well-behaved. Only English may be spoken and not the local language. Although English is the national language and the language of education, government schools teach in their own language for the first three years.

School starts at 7 am and the children have to be on time. Classes are formal, but children have to copy lots of things from the blackboard, because there are few textbooks, sometimes only one for the teacher to use. Class work is heavy and the children have tests every week. They also study during the holiday.

  A. Children can wear what they like there.

  B. Textbooks are not needed.

Dear Bridge of Hope supporters,

July 2010 was a productive month for the teachers at BOH. Marilyn traveled to Liberia and helped Kathleen Ngenda with her teacher training program on Basic Adult Literacy. During the eight-day training, she helped the teachers learn to pronounce, spell and write correctly. They are currently working on personal sets of cards and lists so that they can teach this concept to students in the fall. Kathleen plans on two trips back to the school to monitor teachers in their teaching.

Marilyn found a very dedicated (投入的)and enthusiastic group of elementary teachers who are focused on bettering themselves as educators. BOHUSA will offer financial support for their further educational studies this fall. Our goal is to have all staff be certified by the end of 2013.

The Liberian government recommends a C-certificate for teachers of elementary students, which can be obtained in one year of education classes (taken on Saturdays).

There is a great need to add seventh and eighth grade classrooms and a library. There is actually no room, however, and so we need to add a second floor. Currently the ground floor houses the church and the school uses this space for daily services. The first floor would give space for three more classrooms, in addition to a large reading room and computer labs. About $40,000 to 50,000 is required to meet the educational needs.

If you would like to contribute to this building project, please make out your check to:

Researchers who study relationships have discovered that a big difference between those who make new friends easily, and those who don’t, is that socially successful people tend to make eye contact with their conversation partners much more frequently than those who are less successful socially. In fact, you may be able to become much more socially successful by making this one simple change to your behavior.

Most Americans prefer to have a lot of eye contact when they are talking with someone. When a person doesn’t make eye contact with them, they tend to think that the person is hiding something or the person doesn’t believe in himself/herself.

When you are having a conversation and you want to leave a friendly impression, be sure to keep looking at that person frequently while you are talking. If it really bothers you to look directly into another person’s eyes, you can gaze generally at, not above, the eyebrow area or the bridge of the nose; this is close enough to the eye region that you will appear to be looking at the person’s eyes. But neither the hair or the shoulders have the same effect. Don’t stare at other people too intensely, otherwise, you will look aggressive(攻击性).

Keep the majority of your focus on the other person. If you glance around the room too much, or look too frequently at other people, your conversation partner may guess that you are looking around for someone else you would rather talk with.

You can lighten your nervousness by smiling more often, nodding, and by gazing at the entire face as well as the eyes. In addition, you can frequently look away for very short periods.

When people get the sense that you are really paying attention to them, they will be much more likely to want to have conversations with you!

1.Which of the following is NOT the impression left by those who don’t make eye contact during the talk?

A.They are not telling the truth.

B.They are bored with the partner.

C.They are lacking in confidence

D.They are angry and ready to attack.

2. Besides the eyes of the partner, during the talk, you can look at his/her ___________.

A.hair

B.shoulders

C.the bridge of the nose

D.area above the eyebrows

3. From the passage, we can learn that ____________________.

A.looking away during conversation should always be avoided.

B.looking at a person frequently can give him/her a good impression.

C.many Americans feel like being stared at for a long time.

D.all successful people are good at making eye contact.

4.What would be the best title for the passage?

A.How to make yourself socially successful

B.How to use eye contact to make a good impression

C.How to make friends with the people around you

D.How to leave a good impression during a talk
