WHEN John Gurdon was 15, he ranked last out of the 250 boys in his grade at biology. He also came in last for every other science subject. His teacher wrote in a      : “I believe he has ideas about becoming a      ; on his present showing this is quite foolish.”
Luckily, the teacher’s words didn’t       Gurdon’s love for science. He kept working hard. He went to lab earlier and left       than anyone else.
On Oct 8, 2012, 64 years later, the British professor       the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Japanese scientist Shinya Yamanaka had contributed to the research and therefore       the award.
Gurdon got the honor       his research into cells and cloning. When he was studying at Oxford, he did some       on cells. He took a cell from an adult frog, moved its      , and put them into an egg cell. The egg cell then       into a clone of the adult frog. His research       for the first time that every cell in the body contains the same genes.
At that time, many people       accept Gurdon’s idea. But later it helped to       Dolly the sheep in 1996, the first cloned mammal in history. It also led to important findings in the       use of cells. For example,       from someone’s skin can turn into any type of tissue in the body. This is good news for those       who have diseased or damaged tissue.
Gurdon always remembers the       he had when he was 15. He even put the report on his desk as a daily       to himself.
“When you have      , like an experiment doesn’t work, it’s nice to remind yourself that perhaps you are not so good at your job and the teacher may be      ,” he said.
However, the facts suggest Gurdon is pretty good indeed.

There is a small shop about 200 meters from where I live that sells meat and other basic necessities. About 10 years ago, there was a beggar who would go into the shop every day and ask the owner for a        . The owner,       he would love to help, simply didn't have any jobs available, so he kept       the man's request.
This situation continued         for a few months, until the owner         to give the homeless man a job which        sweeping outside the shop. Every single day from 5 am, the homeless man was there doing the very        he could for the        , and it did earn him some pennies.        , the owner saw how good a job the man was doing and gave him a job working        a cashier(出纳、收银员). He was watched closely to make sure that he didn't        any of the money received from the sales. He was still homeless,       . The homeless man did a/an        job as a cashier for over 2 years, and did such a good job that he was asked to         the finances(财政、金融) for the whole shop.
Two years later, the owner        . In his will, he only had one         , to give the whole shop to the "homeless" man. Now, I could walk into that shop and see him working as hard as      , with his own business that is still       and active 10 years after getting his job as a sweeper.
From this story, we can probably get the inspiration: work hard and give everything your best effort, even if it isn't your         situation, it very well may turn out to        some day in the future.

A mouse looked through a crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife opening a package: What food might it contain? He was astonished to discover that it was a mouse trap!
Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse declared the warning, “There is a mouse trap in the house, there is a mouse trap in the house.”
The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, “Mr Mouse, I can tell you this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me, I cannot be bothered by it.”
The mouse turned to the pig and told him, “There is a mouse trap in the house.” “I am so sorry, Mr Mouse,” sympathized the pig, “but there is nothing I can do about it but pray; be assured that you are in my prayers.”
The mouse turned to the cow, who replied, “A mouse trap, am I in grave danger, huh?”
So the mouse returned to the house, head down and depressed to face the farmer’s mouse trap alone.
That very night a sound was heard throughout the house, like the sound of a mouse trap catching its prey. The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see that it was an evil snake whose tail the trap had caught. The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital. She returned home with a fever. Now everyone knew to treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup’s main ingredient. His wife’s sickness continued so that friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig. The farmer’s wife did not get well, in fact, she died, and so many people came for her funeral. The farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide meat for all of them to eat.
So the next time you hear that someone is facing a problem and think that it does not concern you, remember that when the least of us is threatened, we are all at risk.

It has taken 90 years since she was born in a poor house in County Limerick for a woman considered America’s oldest illegal immigrant to get her Irish passport. It will be a few more months before Josephine Stout will finally be declared a US citizen, entitling(赋于…权力) her to a pension and other benefits.
Despite having lived in America for most of her life since she arrived in 1923, the great-grandmother was declared an undocumented alien(华侨)in 1999, when she tried to claim state aid to help raise her seven grandchildren, who were left orphaned when her daughter was killed by a robber over$20.
Even though she has never considered herself Irish, noting “I don’t even have an accent,” she didn’t officially exist as an American when officials in Chicago insisted that she prove her citizenship in order to qualify for benefits. But she had no birth certificate or passport when she arrived on an immigrant ship from Ireland from Ireland with her parents, who had 12 other children.
She never gave the matter much thought until 1999, when she was in her late 70s and needed assistance to raise her grandchildren. For 12 years, Mrs. Stout managed to support the family by doing various jobs. But her life was hard and marked by tragedy. Her husband died in 1996, and her son Thomas died in a car accident with his girlfriend in 1985. Her only surviving child, Rosemary, died of cancer in 2009.
A Catholic charity referred her case to Chicago Irish Immigrant Support(CIIS), which alerted the Irish Consulate(领事馆). Through them, they tracked down her birth certificate, the website irishcentral.com reported. The document, in turn, allowed her to receive her Irish passport, and eventually her American green card in September 2011, which was dated back to November 1, 1923.
