 Dear Mrs Chen,

How time flies!I have been your student for nearly half a year. To begin with,I want to say thanks to you for your hard work. Besides,we all enjoy your lively and interesting classes. And with your help,I have made such great progress in English.

To be honest,I still have some puzzles. I can't keep so many new words in mind and don't know how to use them correctly. What's more, grammar is a big problem to me. I often mix up its rules. Would you please help me with these problems?

Mrs Chen,as we hope to improve our listening ability, could you please speak more English in class? And we can't bear so much homework of all the subjects,so would you please reduce the amount of our English homework?

Best wishes to you!

Yours,

Wang Gang

It's fourteen years since I left the Philippines to live with my family in the U. S. A. A month ago, while on summer vacation back in my motherland,I learned a lesson from mosquito bites. Right before 1 Kennedy Airport in New York,my grandma 2 me of the behaviour of the native mosquitoes around the 3 like me. She said, ¡°There's an old saying¡ªthe 4 you stay away from the mother- land, the sweeter your blood 5 to the mosquitoes. Not 6 it,I replied ,¡°Grandma, that's just an old wives¡¯ tale! ¡±

Well, less than a week 7 my arrival in Manila,I was already covered with a 8 in case of mosquito bites. I took many measures to keep myself from being 9 ,but they all proved useless.

Late one 10 in my cousin's home,I couldn¡¯t bear the 11 of the bites. Hoping to find some comfort,I 12 my cousin, who was sleeping peacefully in the bed next to mine. Unhappy for being 13 ,she said ,¡°There is nothing you can do. Go back to sleep. ¡± With a few turns, she slept again.

Enviously (¼É¶ÊµØ) 14 her sleep,I hoped a big mosquito would 15 on her face. However, the mosquitoes would just lightly dance around her forehead and fly away quickly, never biting her. Amazed,I ran to others¡¯ 16 £¬only to find they were all sleeping 17 as the same thing happened again and again.

From those bites,I came to 18 my grandma's silly tale. From then on,I've always tried to keep a (n) 19 mind about those strange old wives¡¯ tales 20 they do have some truth to them.

Public Speaking and Critical Thinking What is critical thinking? To a certain degree,if s  a matter of logic (Âß¼) Ò»of being able to spot weaknesses in other peopled arguments and to avoid them in your own. It also includes related skills such as distinguishing fact from opinion and assessing the soundness of evidence.

In the broad sense, critical thinking is focused, organised thinking¡ªthe ability to see clearly the relationships among ideas. 71 The greatest thinkers, scientists, and inventors have often taken information that was readily available and put it together differently to produce new ideas. That, too,is critical thinking.

72 As the class goes on,for example, you will probably spend a good deal of time organising your speeches. While this may seem like a purely mechanical (

еµÄ) exercise,it is closely connected with critical thinking. If the structure of your speech is loose and confused,

chances are that your thinking is also disordered and confused. If,on the other hand, the structure is clear, there

is a good chance your thinking is too. Organising a

speech is not just a matter of arranging the ideas you already have. 73

What is true of organisation is true of many aspects of public speaking. 74 As you work on expressing your ideas in clear, accurate language, you will improve your ability to think clearly and accurately. 75 As you learn to listen critically to speeches in class, you will be better able to assess the ideas of speakers in a variety of situations.

If you take full advantage of your speech class, you will be able to develop your skills as a critical thinker in many circumstances. This is one reason public speaking has been regarded as a vital part of education since the days of ancient Greece.

   A. Rather,it is an important part of shaping the ideas themselves.

   B. This may seem like a lot of time, but the rewards are well worth it.

   C. It may also help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech.

   D. It has often been said that there are few new ideas in the world, only reorganised ideas.

   E. If you are wondering what this has to do with your public speaking class, the answer is quite a lot.

   F. The skills you learn in your speech class can help you become a more effective thinker in a number of ways.

   G. As you study the role of evidence and reasoning in speechmaking, you will see how they can beused in other forms of communication as well.
