    Despite the fact that the economy is not as booming as it was，studies have shown that many are feeling happier as they save more and spend less．This mainly happens when they spend money on experiences instead of material objects and when they relish（喜爱）what they plan to buy long before they buy it．
    It is true that extra cash always makes life a little easier because it lets people meet basic needs．But scholars have found that types of purchases，their size and frequency，and even the timing of the spending all affect long-term happiness．One major finding is that spending money for an experience---concert tickets，French lessons，sushi-rolling classes---produces longer-lasting satisfaction．
    At the height of the recession in 2008，consumers were doing something different---vacationing in their yards，eating more dinners at home，organizing family game nights．As a result，these leisure activities appeared to make them less lonely and increased their interactions with others．
    "I think people are realizing they don't need what they had．They're more interested in creating memories，"says a scholar．
    To stop purchasing things using credit cards at any time brings happiness，too；in other words，waiting for something and working hard to get it makes it feel more valuable and more stimulating．In fact，scholar have found that anticipation increases happiness．Considering buying an i-Pad？You might want to think about it as long as possible before taking one home．

    I have hated getting up early all my life．The moment the alarm goes off in the morning I feel sick and it's hard to stomach any food until mid-morning．Nights，though，are a different story； I'll happily stay up and I'll do anything to escape an early start．

    But it is a myth to say that society is neatly divided into lark and owls．Surveys that explore what time of day people prefer to do activities reveal that only 20% of adults are true larks or owls．That leaves 80% of us-half of which lean towards one direction or the other，the other half are neither．That's terrible for those owls around the world who have to exist in a society organised around the larks．Schools and work often start very early，and there's a sense of love for getting up early，while the owls are simply slovenly．But no one suggests that the larks are lazy for having an early night while owls are working．
    Fortunately science is on my side．I'm not sleeping my life away or missing the best part of the day．I'm behaving according to my genes．Researchers have found that your chronotype（睡眠类型）is to a large extent genetic．So it seems that when I try to get up early I am fighting my genes．With the help of an alarm clock I can force myself to get up early．But as soon as I fail to set the alarm my genes will return to my old ways．

    Murray Straus，professor at the University of New Hampshire in America，has studied the topic of children and spanking for decades．He said that children who were physically punished have lower IQs than their peers．It may be that children with lower IQs were more likely to get spanked，but the punishment may have been counterproductive（反作用的）to their mental development，as well．
    Some researchers make the argument that occasional open-handed smacks（用巴掌打）on the bottom are not only harmless but can have some benefit．
    Last year，Marjorie Gunnoe，a psychologist at Calvin College，studied teens who have never been spanked．There are a greater number of children growing up without ever having been physically punished．Gunnoe's research suggests they don't turn out any better than those who were sometimes spanked．
    There are some parents who simply cannot control their tempers（脾气）．But I still believe that the best parents are the ones who are able to offer fair and firm discipline without ever turning to physical punishment．
