    Stuttgart’s   Cannstatter Volkfest is listed as the world’s second largest beer-drinking   event–following Munich’s Oktoberfest. But it is considered Germany’s more   authentic celebration of local heritage and, of course, beer.
    Started as an   agricultural fair in 1818–a symbolic 24-meter-high “fruit column” pays homage to the past–the three-week   festival (from September 23 to October 9 this year) features live music, a   re-created Alpine village, and carnival（狂欢节） rides.

    Here in the   northern Canadian town at Hudson Bay, visitors can see the area’s most famous   fall residents–polar   bears.
    More than a   thousand of the world’s   largest land carnivores migrate through the “polar   bear capital of the world” during October and   November, when the first ice forms on the edge of Hudson Bay. 
    The frozen   conditions make it easier for hungry bears to hunt for seals (by walking   instead of swimming).

    There are two dangers to be guarded against in old age. One of these is undue absorption in the past. It does not do to live in memories, in regrets for the good old days, or in sadness about friends who are dead.     Some old people are afraid of death. But in fact the best way is to make your interests gradually wider and ore impersonal. An individual human existence should be like a river-small at fist, rushing passionately past rocks and over waterfalls. Gradually the river grows wider and the banks move back and in the end they become mixed in the sea without any visible break.

    There was no sign of Mrs. Squirrel, so they blocked the hole, took my cheque for $250 and left. Shortly after they left, Mrs. Squirrel returned from her shopping trip. She was mad at being driven out and began feverishly clawing at the porch roof. In order to stop the destruction of my home, I drove her away with the broom again.
    Each day thereafter, Mrs. Squirrel continued her attack on my possession. I then called the company to report that “SHE’S BAAAAAACK…” The receptionist said that if Mrs. Squirrel had managed to find another way into my porch roof, it would be a new charge. I replied I couldn’t continue contributing my husband’s hard-earned income to their silly wildlife experts and hang up.
    I went to the porch and banged on the roof. Mrs. Squirrel came out and glared at me. We negotiated some terms, came to an agreeable arrangement and went back into our respective homes.
    All is quiet these days, although large quantities of materials have been removed from my garage wall and my daughter claims that some of her doll-house furniture has disappeared.
