    This cheese slicer is great for both tasks．It even has adjustable tension on the two cutting wires．A point of information：I did break a wire cutting a very hard piece of cheese with black pepper．Good news，the wire is replaceable，and I was able to purchase new wires to fix it．Maybe best to use on softer cheeses．Lessons learned．But，highly recommended for every other use except for those extremely hard cheeses．

    Bucket with lid keeps your fireplace（壁炉） clear of ashes．
    I purchased this ash bucket recommended by my friend and have found it invaluable．Previously I had an old bucket that got left outside and usually filled up with rain and became a mess to clean．This ash bucket has a raised bottom and thermal insulation（隔热层） to prevent any accidental hot coals in your ash to damage your floor or cause a fire．You can store this bucket indoors since the lid is nice and tight．

    12．Given the tradition of students bringing apples to their teachers，it somehow seems fitting that an old apple barn（谷仓） will find a new life as a one-room schoolhouse．And it is just as fitting that a retired schoolteacher will become the caretaker of that historic treasure．
    My friend Velma，a teacher for more than 30 years，has been retired for some time now，but that doesn't stop her giving history lessons at the old Englewood School，located on her family's California farm．The lovingly restored building was constructed around 1850 as a home for a woodsman and later was used as an apple barn．Then，in 1870 it began a new life as a schoolhouse．
    Originally located in the nearby Englewood meadow，it was now moved its current site in 1978 by Velma's late husband and his brother，Robert and Richard，who thought it would help keep Velma busy in retirement．No nails had been used in the original construction，so each piece of wood had to be carefully marked and the building was reassembled（重装） on its new site．The brothers worked with much care and hard work to ensure a perfect fit of mitered（斜接的） comers．After the relocation，Velma and her family furnished the school with some of its original desks．They also added a collection of schoolbooks，the oldest dating back to 1845．
    Nowadays Velma gives tours to local schoolchildren and other groups，who learn what it was like to attend school back in the good old days．She has kids ring the school bell，recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sing"Good Morning to You"as they might have done in days gone by．Then，with twinkling eyes and much enthusiasm，she tells the history of the school，and gives a short sample lesson．

    16．The environmental group Heal the Bay organized a beach clean-up．And I was one of the volunteers．We went to Venice Beach to clean up the trash．

        We kept on picking up the trash．Then I saw someone with a full Heal the Bay trash bag and I went to see what was inside．When I opened the trash bag，I found everything from a pair of old jeans and a brown belt to headphones and some plastic bags．It made me very angry with the people who left their things behind without thinking what effects they might have on the ocean．
        It is really important to protect the ocean．The ocean covers 70 percent of the Earth's surface．A clean ocean not only helps animals in the ocean survive but also helps us survive．
        By noon，the sun was shining and the temperature was rising．The volunteers that had spread out across Venice Beach were coming back to throw the trash they had collected into the truck．I could not believe how much trash there was．All together we collected more than 135 bags of trash．I do hope that next time people go to the beach，they will stop littering．
