14.If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong.Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power.Researchers found that learning other lan guages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language.A team led by Dr.Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of"early bilinguals"who had learnt a second language before the age of five,as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.
"Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,"said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills."Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),"he said."You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas."
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four.Reading,writing,and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better."Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,"explained the scientists.

4.Organic food,grown without artificial chemicals,is increasingly popular nowadays.Consumers have been willing to pay up to twice as much for goods with organic labels.However,if you think paying a little more for organic food gets you a more nutritiousand safer product,you might want to save your money.A study led by researchers at Stanford University says that organic products aren't necessarily more nutritious,and they're no less likely to suffer from disease-causing bacteria,either.
The latest results,published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine,suggest that buyers may be wasting their money."We did not find strong evidence that organic food is more nutritious or healthier,"says Dr.Crystal Smith-Spangler from Stanford."So consumers shouldn't assume that one type of food has a lower risk or is safer."
For their new study,Smith-Spangler and her colleagues conducted a review of two categories of research,including 17studies that compared health outcomes between consumers of organic against traditional food products,and 223studies that analyzed the nutritional content of the foods,including key vitamins,minerals and fats.
While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content,they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining on the surfaces.Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards.And both organic and traditional meats,such as chicken and pork,were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates.The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3fatty acids,a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease.However,these nutritional differences were too small,and the researchers were unwilling to make much of them until further studies confirm the trends.
Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more natural-growing practices,but that doesn't always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product.The U.S.Department of Agriculture (USDA) states that"whether you buy organic or not,finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste."Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic.
12.The new research questions whether organic foodD.
A.should replace traditional food
B.has been overpriced by farmers
C.is grown with less harmful chemicals
D.is really more nutritious and healthier
13.Smith-Spangler and her colleagues found thatC.
A.organic food could reduce the risk of heart disease
B.traditional food was grown with more natural methods
C.both organic and traditional food they examined were safe
D.there was not a presence of any forms of bacteria in organic food
14.Which of the following is relatively healthier according to the passage?B
A.Organic chicken and pork.
B.Organic milk and chicken.
C.Traditional chicken and pork.
D.Traditional fruit and vegetables.
15.What is the author's attitude toward organic food?A

8.Most people,when they travel to space,would like to stay in orbit for a few days or more.And this stands to reason,if you're paying﹩20,000for your trip to orbit(轨道)!So in order for tourism to reach its full potential there's going to be a need for orbital accommodation---or space hotels.What would a space hotel actually be like to visit?Hotels in orbit will offer the services you expect from a hotel---private rooms,meals,bars.But they'll also offer two unique experiences:impressive views---of Earth and space---and the endless entertainment of living in zero gravity---including sports and other activities that make use of this.
The hotels themselves will vary greatly---from being quite simple in the early days to huge luxury structure at a later date.It's actually surprising that as later as 1997,very few designs for space hotels were published.This is mainly because those who might be expected to design them haven't expected launch(发射) costs to come down far enough to make them possible.
Lots of people who've been to space have described vividly what it's like to live in zero gravity.There are obviously all sorts of possibilities for dancing,gymnastics,and zero-G sports.Luckily,you don't need to sleep much living in zero gravity,so you'll have plenty of time for relaxing by hanging out in a bar with a window looking down at the turning Earth below.
Of course all good things have come to an end,unfortunately.And so after a few days you'll find yourself heading back though you'll be much more expert at exercising in zero gravity than you were when you arrive.You'll be thinking how soon you can save up enough to get back up again---or maybe you should change jobs to get to work in an orbiting hotel.

24.When traveling in space,most people would like to stay in orbit for a few days becauseA.
A.It is expensive to travel in space
B.they would find the possible life in other star systems
C.they could enjoy the luxury of space hotels
D.they want to realize the full potential of tourism
25.Which of the following is a unique experience that space hotels will offer?B
A.The gravitational pull   B.The special views.
C.The relaxation in a bar.D.The space walk.
26.This passage is mainly aboutD.
A.traveling in space
B.the ways of living in space hotels
C.zero gravity and space hotels
D.the description of space hotels.

9.More than 2.25billion cups of coffee are drunk throughout the world each day,and it's likely that many taste bitter.Now,a new study suggests that coffee fans can make their drink sweeter by changing the color of their cups.
Researchers from Oxford set out to prove whether the claim that coffee drunk from a white cup tastes bitter was true.They used 36volunteers and three different colored cups---blue,white and transparent(透明的) glass---to examine the claim.
In one experiment,the white cup increased the intensity (浓度) of the coffee taste relative to the transparent cup.Then,in a second experiment,coffee drunk from the white cup was found to taste less sweet when compared to the other colored cups,while the blue cup made the coffee taste the sweetest.
The scientists believe that the color brown may be associated with bitterness,and coffee in a white cup appears the brownest."Our study clearly shows that the color of a cup does influence our sense of the coffee taste,"leading author Dr George Doorn,wrote in an article for The Conversation."The effect of the color of the cup on the taste of the coffee reported here suggests that cafe owners should carefully consider the color of their cups,"he said,"The potential effects may spell the difference between a one-time purchase and a return customer."Actually,the idea that color can change the food and drink taste came out many years ago.A study published last year reported that red,strawberry-flavored cake served on a white plate was rated as 10percent sweeter than the same food presented on a black plate.
