    5．"Why do we have to learn this useless thing？"Of all the questions I have heard from my students during my years in the classroom，this was the one most frequently asked．I would answer it by telling them about an experience I once had．
    It was an experience I had with a students，who I shall call Alan，early in my teaching career．When Alan was in the eighth grade，he majored in"trouble"．He had studied how to be a bully（恃强凌弱者） and was getting his master's degree in"thievery"．
    Every day I had my students memorize a famous saying from a great thinker．No one complained about this daily routine more than Alan-right up to the day he was dismissed．Then I lost touch with him for five years．Then one day，he called．
    He told me that after being sent to juvenile prison（少年犯管教所），he hated himself so much that he had cut his wrists with a knife．
    He said，"You know what？Mr．Schlatter，as I lay there with my life running out of my body，I suddenly remembered that useless saying you made me write twenty times one day．‘There is no failure except in no longer trying．'Then it suddenly made sense to me．As long as I was alive，I wasn't a failure，but if I allowed myself to die，I would most certainly die a failure．So with my remaining strength，I called for help and started a new life．"
    At the time he had heard the saying，it as a pebble（鹅卵石） which made no sense to him．But when he needed guidance in a moment of difficulty，it had become a diamond．And so it is to you．I say，gather all the pebbles you can，and you can count on a future filled with diamonds．

    2．Those accustomed to browsing through thousands of books in large bookstores may find Japan's Morioka Shoten a little strange．That's because this tiny bookstore that is located in Ginza，Tokyo sells only a single book at a time．
    Opened in May 2015，Morioka Shoten is the brainchild of Yoshiyuki Morioka．He began his career as a bookstore clerk in Tokyo's Kanda district before branching out to open his own store．It was here while organizing book reading and signing that he realized that customers usually came into the store with one title in mind．Morioka began to wonder if a store could exist by selling multiple copies of just one single book．In November 2014，he partnered with Masamichi Toyama to establish a unique bookstore with the philosophy of"A Single Room with a Single Book"．
    The selections that are picked by Morioka change weekly and vary widely to attract customers with different interests．Recent choices include The True Deceiver，an award-winning Swedish novel by Tove Jansson，Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales，and a collection of Karl Blossfeldt's photography of plants．Morioka has also selected books written by a famous Japanese author Mimei Ogawa．
    To highlight his only offering，Morioka often uses clever tricks．For example，when selling a book about flowers，the storekeeper decorated his shop with the ones that had been mentioned in the book．He also encourages authors to hold talks and discussions so they can connect with customers．Morioka says his goal is for the customers to experience being inside a book，not just a bookstore．

    13．To discipline means to teach．To be well disciplined is to have learned to live in accordance with the sensible rules and regulations that society has set up for the behavior of its members．
    Unless the child learns from each disciplinary situation how better to govern his conduct，effective discipline has not been developed．Parents must accept for themselves the idea that successful discipline results in learning．When they approach situations in which a child must adapt themselves to demands made upon them as learning situations，many problems usually thought of in connection with discipline disappear．
