[1]Global difference in intelligence is a sensitive topic, long filled with a large number of different opinions. But recent data has indeed shown cognitive (认知的) ability to be higher in some countries than in others. What’s more, IQ scores have risen as nations develop—a phenomenon known as the "Flynn effect". Many causes have been put forward for both the intelligence difference and the Flynn effect, including education, income, and even non-agricultural labor. Now, a new study from researchers at the University of New Mexico offers another interesting theory: intelligence may be linked to infectious-disease rates.
[2]The brain, say author Christopher Eppig and his colleagues, is the "most costly organ in the human body". Brainpower consumes almost up to 90 percent of a newborn’s energy. It’s clear that if something affects energy intake while the brain is growing, the impact could be long and serious. And for vast parts of the globe, the biggest threat to a child’s body—and therefore brain—is parasitic (由寄生虫引起的) infection. These illnesses threaten brain development________________. They can directly attack live tissue, which the body must then try every means to replace. They can invade the digestive pipe and block nutritional intake. They can rob the body’s cells for their own reproduction. And then there’s the energy channeled (输送) to the immune system to fight the infection.
[3]Using data on national "disease burdens" (life years lost due to infectious diseases) and average intelligence scores, the authors found they are closely associated. The countries with the lowest average IQ scores have the highest disease burdens without exception. On the contrary, nations with low disease burdens top the IQ list.
[4]If the study holds water, it could be revolutionary for our understanding of the still-confusing variation in national intelligence scores.

A debate is a discussion about a subject on which people have different views. It’s a nice way of gaining a lot of knowledge and views on a topic, or situation that we aren’t either aware of, or haven’t really looked into in detail. It makes you more able to think critically and more confident in speaking. In addition, it helps in appreciating tolerance of others’ opinion and improves your listening skills.
A debate requires one to know how to use words and intelligence to overcome his or her opposing team members. To give great arguments during a debate, first you need to get your facts right. To make what you have in material for a debate contain facts, don’t just depend on the Internet, especially avoid just referring to one website for all your information. You are also required to refer to books, and make sure they’re authors of a high degree, since their materials have reference notes and extensive research projects done on what they are covering.
Second, you should be full of confidence. You need to show that you’re sure of what you’re saying , and point out how flawed their comeback arguments were. The only way to do this is to thoroughly know your material before heading on out to a debate session. Know your statistics, know your statistics, know your history and above all know names, dates and places. Make key notes to refer to. Don’t stammer (口吃), and also don’t level your gaze with your opponent or the rest of them. All this will help you keep confident.
At last, by no means should you lose your calmness, but keep your voice firm and raised enough to sound calm. A good team member should know how to keep his emotions in control as well as keep others under control in his/ her team.

If you are worried about things and are under a lot of stress at work or school, then you are probably not sleeping well. Worry can keep you awake, tossing and turning in bed until the early hours of the morning when you eventually fall asleep. When you wake up, you dont feel refreshed, but tired and worn out and unable to face a new day.
Dr. Henry Winkle, in a recent newspaper article entitled Stress and Sleep, indicates(暗示、表明)that                            . Dr. Winkle says, “The more we worry, the less we sleep, the more we are unable to deal with stress. If we can find a way to get a good night’s sleep,” he adds, “we can often find the energy to deal with what’s worrying us.”
So, what is a good night’s sleep? Research shows that the amount of sleep which people need in order to keep healthy varies a lot. Seven hours is about the average amount, though strangely enough, sleeping longer often gives you a headache instead of making you feel more refreshed.
Dr. Winkle believes that preparing for sleeping is important. People who work late should try to give themselves a short break and do something restful before going to bed. This could be watching TV or listening to music. Doing some exercise earlier in the day should help you to feel physically as well as mentally tired. A bedtime drink can also help, but coffee or tea should be avoided as they contain caffeine and will keep you awake. “When you put the light out,” Dr. Winkle says, “concentrate on relaxing your muscles, working slowly up from your feet, and you’ll be asleep before you know it.”

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before. But just as in face–to-face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when online.
The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated. Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes. For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” If the answer is “no”, rewrite and reread. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face.
If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct(本能反应)is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages. If it was caused by disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.
If you do decide to tell someone in the chat room about a mistake, point it out politely. At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.
It is not polite                                such as their age, sex, and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.

Chat rooms and messaging can be great fun,but remember, you never really know who you are talking to online. It could be someone trying to trick you, some kind of weirdo(古怪的人),or someone really dangerous. Here are some tips to help you keep safe:
●  Never use your real name in chat rooms—pick a special online nickname.
●  Never tell anyone personal things about yourself or your family—like your address or telephone number ,or the school or clubs you go to.That goes for sending them photos as well. Remember, even if somebody tells you about themselves, never tell them things about you.
● If you want to meet someone you’ve only spoken to once, remember that they might not be who they said they were. Only meet people in public places and take along an adult—they should do this too, because they don’t know who you really are either!
●     Never respond to nasty(淫秽的)or rude messages, and never send any either! If you feel suspicious or uncomfortable about the way a conversation is going,or if it’s getting really personal, save a record of it and stop the conversation. That way you can show someone and ask what they think.
●  Be careful with any email attachments(附件)or links that people send you, they might contain nasty images,or computer “viruses” that could ruin your PC.So if _______ who it’s from, don’t open it.

Do you have a goal for life? What’s it? Do you want to become a writer, singer or just become a rich person?
A recent survey shows that in modern society, most people pick up practical goals, such as “earning money to buy a house and a car”, “to improve one’s life quality”, and “finding a good job”.
Wang Yu worked in a small company in Nanjing. The job was good and he didn’t have to work for extra hours. However, he felt the work was not exciting at all and the life was boring. So he gave up his job and went to Beijing in February, 2007. When he arrived in Beijing, he set his new goal as finding a good job.
Nowadays more and more people want to live a better life. This fact shows that the society is making progress and people’s life goals have become more practical. One researcher says, “Everybody has his / her own life goal, which will be surely different from people to people. If one is poor, one’s life goal will be to earn more money; if one doesn’t have a diploma, studying hard to get a diploma will become his life goal; and if one doesn’t have love, his life goal will be to look for it. But if one has no life goal, he will idle away (虚度) his lifetime.”

[1]It's safe, it's simple, and it works: Drinking right amounts of water really can help you lose weight, new research shows.
[2]In what researchers claim is the first-ever trial of the effect of water consumption on weight loss, scientists from Virginia Tech found that dieters who started each meal with two glasses of water lost nearly five pounds more, on average, than dieters who did not, over the course of 12 weeks. There's no shortage of clear evidence about how water might work to control your appetite(食欲).It ________________ so you don't eat so much; it keeps down your thirst so that you don't turn to calorie-rich sodas or juices. But until now, the researchers say, there has been no true evidence that water's appetite-controlling benefits ever translate into actual weight loss. Now there is. In the 12-week study period, dieters instructed to drink water with every meal lost an average of 15.5 pounds; dieters given no instructions lost, on average, just 11 pounds.
[3]Perhaps the most surprising thing about the finding is how little we still know about healthy water consumption in general. In fact, although doctors and public health authorities regularly remind us to drink more water, very few studies give any insight into what our ideal quantity may be.
[4]The new results today suggest that many people could indeed stand to drink a little more water than they do.But if you're looking to lose weight, be aware that it is actually possible to drink too much water, and you probably won't help matters any by drinking too much water at a time.In extreme cases, it can even be deadly.A couple of glasses with each meal, however, should be no problem at all for a healthy person.
