Just over a year ago, life as an orphan(孤儿) girl in Tilinanu, southern Malawi, was uncertain.Relying on the kindness of the poor villagers for a roof over their head, many had to sleep in a room that held as many as fifteen people, eating a diet mainly of porridge.Their classroom for daily lessons was an open space in the bush.

Now 34 of them have comfortable beds in a smart new home, with a community hall and medical centre next to it.Another 175 village children eat there daily, with the adults coming in to learn English; it's an amazing transformation. Even more amazing is that the person behind it is just 21.

When Alice Pulford was waiting to get into university, she took a fivemonth teaching position in Malawi. She loved the place, and returned in the spring of 2009 to visit her friend Zulu in Tilinanu. His aunt Mercy owned land there and was doing her best to provide an education for the orphans, many of whom had lost parents to AIDS or malaria(疟疾).

But after helping Mercy out for some time, Alice realised that what the girls in particular really needed was a safe and permanent place to live. There was a derelict(年久失修的) church on Mercy's land.“If you give me the church, I'll set up a home for these children,” Alice told her.Mercy agreed.

Alice phoned home and told her family about her plan. The family had already helped Alice raise £1,800 to assist the orphans. After they received Alice's call, they threw themselves into raising another £6,000, organising theatre trips and special parties and dinners.

Alice found Malawian builders, selected materials and even helped with the bricklaying. In ten weeks, the church became a dormitory with toilets and a living area.In spring last year, Alice raised another £19,000 to build the medical centre and two new dormitories.

The girls are happier—and so is Alice, who has been spending around four months in Malawi a year.“The orphans think they're gaining from me, but when I see their smile, it transforms me,” she says.

Would you eat a ready meal from the fridge rather than cook from scratch? Have you been doing internet shopping rather than going to the stores? What can't you be bothered to do?

A study into how lazy British people are has found more than half of adults are so lazy they'd catch the lift rather than climb two flights of stairs.

Just over 2000 people were quizzed by independent researchers at Nuffield Health, Britain's largest health charity. The results were astonishing.

About one in six people surveyed said if their remote control was broken, they would continue watching the same channel rather than get up.

More than one third of those questioned said they would not run to catch a bus. Worryingly, of the 654 respondents with children, 64% said they were often too tired to play with them.

This led the report to conclude that it's no wonder that one in six children in the UK are classified as obese (very fat) before they start school.

Dr Sarah Dauncey, medical director of Nuffield Health, said: "People need to get fitter, not just for their own sake, but for the sake of their families, friends and evidently their pets too. Ks5u

"If we don't start to take control of this problem, a whole generation will become too unfit to perform even the most rudimentary of tasks."

And Scotland's largest city, Glasgow, was shamed as the most inactive city in the UK, with 75% surveyed admitting they do not get enough exercise, followed closely by Birmingham and Southampton, both with 67%.

The results cause serious challenges for the National Health Service, where obesity-related illnesses such as heart disease and cancer have been on a steady increase for the past 40 years and are costing billions of pounds every year.

What causes children in the UK to be obese?

A. Eating ready meal    B. Watching TV

C. Doing Internet shopping  D. Being lazy

What can be inferred from the passage?

A. British people are too lazy to do anything.

B. Internet shopping will do harm to your health.

C. Many people would not run to catch a bus in Britain.

D. People should be more active and take regular exercise to keep fit.

Which of the following is Not true according to the passage?

A. One sixth of British people use remote control when watching TV.

B. People will benefit not only themselves but their families by getting fit.

C. Fatness can cause diseases such as heart disease and cancer.

D. More people get obesity-related illnesses now than 40 years ago.

What does the underlined word rudimentary most probably mean?

A. basic    B. serious  C. vital    D. hard

All the following are among the most lazy cities in the UK except

A. Glasgow  B. Birmingham   C. Nuffield D. Southampton

Last year more than one million Filipinos worked abroad as servants, nurses, sailors and in other difficult but low-paid jobs.Southeast Asians leave their poorer countries for their richer neighbours.

Many of these wage-earners return in the end.In the meantime, they send home huge amounts of money—in the Philippines’ case, over 10% of its GDP.Between January and November, the amount was up 18% on the same period of 2005.Poverty and unemployment are still high in the Philippines and other labour-exporting(劳务输出) countries. They would be far worse but for this outflow of bodies and inflow of dollars. As for those Asian countries that import(输入) labour,as in Europe, falling birth rates mean they are going to need more foreign workers.

On January 13th leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN) signed an agreement to help migrant(流动的) workers—with the realization that the flow of labour between their countries is a growing problem that they cannot blame on outsiders.A 2005 study showed that 8.4 million Southeast Asians worked outside their home countries, but this did not include the huge numbers of Indonesians doing so without papers. So the true total is probably rather higher.

Of the ten ASEAN countries, the Philippines,Indonesia,Myanmar,Cambodia,Vietnam and Laos export labour,Singapore and Brunei import it,and Thailand and Malaysia do both.Sziraczki of the UN’s International Labour Organization points out that,in the next ten years, the total labour force of the worker-exporting countries should grow by about a third. It makes sense to work on the problem before it gets out of control.

People in the receiving countries seem to be worried about competition for their jobs. Most Thais said their government should admit(准入) no more foreign workers, and a few thought otherwise.Even in Singapore, just over half of people are against admitting more foreign workers.Malaysians think that the increase in foreign workers has worsened crime rates(犯罪率).

It can be inferred from the case of the Philippines that ______.

A.the country is Asia’s main source of migrant workers

B.labour exports lead to a 10% growth of its GDP

C.the outflow of labour helps solve its social problems

D.the country both exports and imports labour force

The flow of labour is a growing problem because ______.

A.there is a greater flow of labour than reported

B.more Indonesians work abroad without papers

C.some countries suffer from low birth rates

D.the ASEAN is against admitting foreign workers

For the labour-importing countries, the flow of labour may lead to ______.

A.higher birth rates

B.lower crime rates

C.greater money inflows

D.stronger job competition

The writer of the text seems to ______.

A.support the flow of labour between countries

B.report fairly on the question of labour flow

C.express his worries over the ASEAN’s decision

D.regard the outflow of labour as a serious problem

Sir,

Just over six months ago, I saw an advertisement in the Morning Mail for a set of the complete works of William Shakespeare. Your company, Cosmo books Ltd., offered this set (eight books of plays and two books of poetry) at what was claimed to be a ‘remarkable’ price: fifteen pounds and fifty pence, including postage and packing. I had wanted a set of Shakespeare’s plays and poems for some time, and these books, in red imitation leather, looked particularly attractive; so I sent for them.

Two weeks later, the books arrived, together with a set of the complete works of Charles Dickens which I had not ordered. So I returned the Dickens books to you, with a cheque for fifteen pounds and fifty pence for the works of Shakespeare. Two more weeks passed. Then there arrived on my door step a second set of the works of Shakespeare, the same set of novels by Dickens and a six book set of the plays of Moliere, in French. Since I do not read French, these were of no use to me at all. However, I could not afford to post all these books back to you, so I wrote to you at the end of August of last year, instructing you to come and collect all the books that I did not want, and asking you not to send any other books until further notice.

You did not reply to that letter. Instead you sent me a bill for forty two pounds, and a set of the plays of Schiller, in German. Since then, a new set of books has arrived every two weeks, the works of Goethe, the poems of Milton, the plays of Strindberg; I hardly know what I have. The books are still all in their boxes, in the garage, and my car has to stand in the rain outside.

I have no room for any more books, and even if I read from now until the Last Judgment, I should not finish reading all the books that you have sent me.

Please send no more books, send no more bills, send no more angry letters demanding payment. Just send one large lorry and take all the books away, leaving me only with the one set of the complete works of Shakespeare for which I have paid.

Yours faithfully,

SIMON WALKER

More than four out of five people admit to telling little white lies at least once a day and the preferred way of “being economical with the truth” is to use technology such as cell phones, texts and e-mails, a survey last Thursday said.

The research by UK pollsters 72 Point found that “techno-treachery(高科技说谎)” was wide-spread with nearly 75 percent of people saying gadgets made it easier to fib(撒小谎).

Just over half of respondents(被调查者) said using gadgets made them feel less guilty when telling a lie than doing it face to face.

The workplace was a favorite location for fibbing with 67 percent of the 1,487 respondents admitting they had lied at work.

The top lie was pretending to be ill (43 percent) followed by saying work had been completed when it hadn’t (23 percent). Worryingly for bosses 18 percent said they lied to hide a big mistake.

But, employers were not the only ones on the receiving end of dishonest statements. Just over 40 percent of the respondents said they had lied to their families or partners.
