A rat looked through a crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife opening a package. What food might it contain? But he discovered that it was a rattrap (捕鼠夹).
Going back to the farmyard, the rat started to give a warning.
The rat turned to the pig and told him:“There is a rattrap in the house, a rattrap in the house!”
“I’m sorry, Mr. Rat,” said the pig, “I can only say this is something terrible to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered with it.”
The rat turned to the cow. But the cow said, “Like wow, Mr. Rat? A rattrap? I am in danger, Huh?”
The rat returned to the house, head down and dejected. So the rat had to face the farmer's rattrap alone.
That very night, a sound was heard throughout the house, like the sound of a rattrap catching its prey (猎物). The farmer's wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not notice that it was a poisonous snake whose tail had been caught by the trap. The snake bit her.The farmer rushed her to hospital. She returned home with a fever. Everyone knows that a fever could be treated with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his knife to the farmyard for the soup. However, his wife's sickness continued.
The farmer's friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer killed the pig. But she didn't get well. Finally, she died, and so many people came for the last sight that the farmer had the cow killed to provide meat for all of them.

John H. Johnson was born in a black family in Arkansas city in 1918. His father died in an accident when John was six. He was reaching the high school age, but his hometown offered no high school for blacks.
Fortunately he had a strong-willed (意志坚强的) caring mother. John remembered that his mother told him many times, “Son, you can be anything you want really to be if you just believe.”She told him not to depend on others, including his mother. “You have to earn success, ”she said. “All the people who work hard don’t succeed, but the only people who do succeed are those who work hard.”
These words came from a woman with less than a third grade education. She also knew that believing and hard work don’t mean everything. So she worked hard as a cook for two years to save enough to take her son, who was then 15, to Chicago.
Chicago in 1933 was not the promised land that black southerners were looking for. John’s mother and stepfather could not find work. But here John could go to school, and here he learned the power of words—as an editor of the newspaper and yearbook at Du Sable High School His wish was to publish a magazine for blacks.
While others discouraged him, John’s mother offered him more words to live by.“Nothing beats a failure but a try. ”She also let him pawn(典当)her furniture to get the $ 500 he needed to start the Negro magazine.
It is natural that difficulties and failures followed John closely until he became very successful. He always keeps his mother’s words in mind.“Son, failure is not in your vocabulary!”
Now John H. Johnson is one of the 400 richest people in America—worth $ 150 million.

"Where do you belong? Certainly not here!"
I turned around to find a teacher staring  42  at us, shouting. In those frozen seconds millions of  43  flashed through my mind.My father would kill me for disobeying teachers.Worse than that, my mother might be so mad that she might not  44  him.My heart  45  even lower when I thought of how angry Mr. Johnson would be.Soon the teacher led Kim and me back to the classroom, leaving us  46  before Mr. Johnson.
But to our  47  , there was no yelling and no anger from Mr. Johnson. 48  , he bent slowly to look me in the eye.I was met with a look of  49  rather than anger. He spoke softly and carefully as he explained why he was  50  in my decision to go where I might have got  51 .As I looked into the eyes of the man who could send me to unimagined  52  at home, tears welled up in my eyes. The thought of disappointing Mr. Johnson  53  me while I felt a gentle touch of Mr. Johnson's hand on my shoulder.I glanced up and he smiled. My  54  for Mr. Johnson grew greatly the moment I discovered that he still liked me even after I'd disappointed him.I could see that he cared more about my  55  than the fact that I'd broken a rule.It was the first time I felt the power of forgiveness.
