There are distinctions between reading for informa?tion and reading for understanding. 9

The first sense is the one in which we read newspapers, magazines, or anything else. 10 Such ma?terials may increase our store of information, but they cannot improve our understanding. And clearly we don't have any difficulty in gaining the new information, for our understanding was equal to them before we started. Otherwise we would have felt the shock of puzzlement.

The second sense is the one in which we read some?thing that at first we do not completely understand. Here the thing to be read is at the first sight better or higher than the reader. The writer is communicating something that can increase the reader's understanding.

11 Otherwise one person could never learn from another. Here "learning" means understanding more, not remembering more information.

What are the conditions in this kind of reading? First, there is inequality in understanding. 12 Besides, his book must convey something he possesses and his potential readers lack. Second the reader must be able to overcome this inequality in some degree. And he should always try to reach the same level of understanding with the writer. If the equality is approached, suc?cess of communication is achieved.

13 It is the least demanding and requires the least amount of effort. Everyone who knows how to read can read for entertainment if he wants to. In fact, any book that can be read for understanding or informa?tion can probably be read for entertainment as well.

A.    Thus, we can employ the word "reading" in two distinct senses.

B.    Such communication between the unequals must be possible.

C.    We can get access to the content of those materials easily.

D.    The writer must be "superior" to the reader in un?derstanding.

E.    The writer should have a better communicating skill.

F.    Besides gaining information and understanding, there's another goal of reading―entertainment.

G.    Reading for entertainment is capable of increasing our understanding for information.

A 承接上文的"There are distinctions between reading for information and reading for understanding.,,,并与下文的"The first sense…,,和"The second sense..."呼应,故选A项。

C 与下文的"And clearly we don't have any difficulty in gaining the new information…"呼应可知,获取阅读材料很容易,故选C项。

B 承接上文的"Here the thing to be read is at the first sight better or higher than the reader.,,可知,这种沟通并不平等, 由此读者的阅读水平才得以提高,与下文的"Firs" there is inequality in understanding,',呼应,故选B项。

D 根据上文的"Here the thing to be read is at the first sight better or higher than the reader.',可知,作者的水平要比读者髙些,这样读者才有所获,与下文的"Besides, his book must convey something he possesses and his potential readers lack."呼应,故选D项。

F 根据下文的"It is the least demanding and requires the least amount of effort. Everyone who knows how to read can read for entertainment if he wants to.,,可知,还有一种阅读的目的属于娱乐型,故选F项。

A [2015 •河南开封高三模拟]

In America, parents tend to encourage their children to develop their potential (潜能)to the fullest extent. Fathers and mothers frequently teach their children both ambition and the confidence necessary to work towards their goals. Ameri?can parents are always active in concentrating on what their kids can do, not what they can't. As a result, millions of American boys and girls grow up hoping to become actors and athletes, diplomats and doctors. Many of them even want to become president.

American parents often encourage their children to be?come involved in extra activities of all types at school, such as student government, sports and music. They believe that on?ly through taking part in these activities can their children be?come mature young adults.

As we all know, schoolwork is important. But parents should realize that the social skills their children learn from natural conversations with each other are as important as schoolwork and the skills they will need in the future work. What's more important in their work is that their children should have a sound knowledge of physics or the ability to communicate effectively.

As a rule, Chinese parents don't educate their children about the same kind of ambition and confidence as Americans do, nor do they encourage the same level of participation in extra activities. Children are typically advised to study hard and pass exams. They have to spend a lot of time in doing much schoolwork every day. It is a great waste of time to do so.

Now more and more Chinese parents have recognized that they should pay attention to developing the potential of their children. I hope that leaders in Chinese educational circles should take some measures to develop the potential of their children. I am very confident about it.

B [2015 •湖北八校高三第二次联考〗Imagine a house that keeps itself warm in the winter?time. Think of the savings in terms of fuel bills and unfriend?ly emissions. Such houses in fact exist, called "passive hou?ses". The concept of these highly energy-efficient buildings took root in the 1990s, before slowly consolidating as a niche construction (生态位构建)concept in the 2000s. Are passive houses now actively moving into the mainstream as sustain?able buildings?

For Brian McGarry, an economics lecturer who built a family house based on passive housing criteria in the Pyrenees this year, the arguments look convincing. As his first full winter in the low energy house draws in, we asked him to keep us informed. Do passive houses work?

I had never heard of a passive house in February 2012, when I purchased a plot of land. Nor did I expect that I would be persuaded to build a pre-constructed , custom-designed house based on energy-efficient passive house criteria. It promised to be easier and quicker to build, cheaper to run, and more comfortable to live in. The objective was to incor?porate the fundamental concepts of passive energy manage?ment into my project: an airtight and highly insulated build?ing envelope; large south-facing double or triple-glazed win?dows (if possible, filled with argon gas) that passively cap?ture the energy of the sun; a heat recovery ventilation(通风设备)system to provide fresh air; and a simple, low-cost heat?ing system consisting of a modern wood-burning stove, a bathroom heater and a portable radiator backup for when the sun doesn't shine and temperatures decline. No significant limitations were placed on the design, and it had excellent en?vironmental credentials (认证).Moreover, the cost was no more than a conventional build.

After six months in use, the house is proving to be both cheap to run and remarkably comfortable—staying cool in the hot summer was effortless, as long as the windows were shuttered or shaded from the sun. Now staying warm in the cold, high-altitude December climate also seems easy, so far.

Winter arrived in force in the Pyrenees in November, with abundant snowfalls and temperatures as low as minus 8° Celsius. Though early days, the house has responded well : the stove is lit during cold evenings but the portable radiator has not yet been needed. This type of construction seems not only to make economic and environmental sense, but to en?hance our quality of life, too.

5.We can learn from Paragraph 1  that passive houses

 A.     consume extra energy to keep warm in winter and cool in summer

B.     had been introduced for a decade before the birth of the theory

C.     appeal to both the self-builders and those constructors

D.     refer to a certain house comfortable, costly and also pleasing

6.Regarding the passive energy management, the houses have characteristics EXCEPT •

 A.     using south-facing windows to take in solar energy

B.     providing energy for taking a shower when it's rainy

C.     supplying fresh air with a special heat recovery system

D.     placing more demands and restrictions on the design

7. How did Brian McGarry find his self-built passive house?

A. Very unaffordable.       B. Energy-consuming.

C. Comfortable to live in.      D. Awkward to use.

8. What is the writer's attitude towards the passive house?
A. Supportive.                B. Critical.

C.  Oppositive.               D. "Doubtful.

A [2015 •莆田一中、漳州一中、泉州五中三校联考]

They will be here in a minute, surely. I'll just stare at my shoes a little while longer to pass the time. Wish I'd brought a book. Hang on, though, what if I,ve got the wrong day? The wrong place? Have the clocks gone back? No, damn it; I'm off home. Whoever I'm waiting for clearly lives in a different time zone from me.

I am always 10 minutes early, so if you're 10 minutes late, I've been foot-tapping for 20 minutes. I know it's not fair to hold the first 10 against you, but I just can't help my?self. I never wait more than 20 minutes beyond the meeting time we decided upon, not for anyone, ever.

OK, that's not .strictly true. I have, on occasion, hung around anxiously and heart-brokenly for up to an hour, but the bitter anger that follows is never a pretty sight. If you've made me wait that long, you will wish you hadn't bothered turning up at all.

How come some people are always late and some are al?ways on time? If I can manage to be punctual, why can't you? Because I left a hot cup of coffc^' at home while you sat down to roll another cigarette. Because I spilled jam on my pants and quickly wiped it off whereas you took time to change your whole outfit. Because I switched off midway through a TV series? but you had to ride out the end, didn't you? And don't even think about blaming the traffic. How do you think I got here? By flying carpet? Only carelessness or arrogance(傲慢) can explain a habit of lateness.

Some people are always late because they can't make re?alistic calculations about how long it takes to do things. There are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour. Just deal with it. Painful as it may be, you have to accept that, as you've agreed to meet at eight and it's now a quarter to eight, you don't have time to phone your girlfriend.

Much worse, though, are those with big egos (自我). Being late is just rude. Being late on purpose really means that you hate the person you are meeting.

Of course, there are some perfectly lovely latecomers out there. I just never wait long enough to find out.

Eating different coloured foods can keep you healthy, as well as change your mood and behaviour. Here is a list of colours, which can change your life.

Blue/Purple

Blue is considered to be peaceful and calm and it has the same effect on our health. The blue/purple colour in food is due primarily to their anthocyanins which are an?tioxidants (抗氧化剂)that are particularly heart-healthy and may help support healthy blood pressure. Out of all the blue and purple foods available, blueberries are considered to have the highest antioxidant level. An analysis of the latest data from the National Health and Nutrition Ex?amination Study found that people who eat purple and blue fruits and vegetables are at a reduced risk for high blood pressure and are less likely to be overweight.

A food and health expert says that blue and purple colour foods can prevent blood mass formation, and they also lower the risk of cancer.

Foods that contain blue and purple colours are: red?dish eggplant (especially the skin) , blueberries, black?berries, purple grapes, etc.

Foods that contain the green colour are : broccoli , cab?bages ,cucumbers, etc.

Red

Lycopene (番茄红素)in reddish fruits and vegetables is a powerful antioxidant that has been associated with a reduced risk of some cancers, and also provides protec?tion against heart attacks.

Dr Smith says, "Cooked tomato sauces are associ?ated with greater health benefits as compared with the uncooked version as the heating process allows lycopene to be more easily absorbed by the body. Obtaining the most benefit from food depends on proper selection, storage and cooking of the produce.,,

Foods that contain the red colour are: tomatoes and tomato products, watermelon, guava, red onions, red chili, red apples, red grapes, cherries, etc.

Orange

The orange foods are also rich in carotene, which is a particularly good antioxidant.  These foods are com?monly considered eyesight foods because they contain vi?tamin A.

B [2015 •成都外国语学校高三月考] There are many ways of defining success. It is accurate to say that each of us has our own idea of success to the ex?tent that each of us is responsible for setting our own goals and determining whether we have met these goals satisfactori?ly. Because each of us possesses unique differences in genetic ability and favourable environments in which to express these abilities, it is necessarily true that we must define success broadly.

For some people, simply being able to live their life with the least misery and sufferings is considered a success. Think of the peace of mind of the poor shepherd who tends his sheep, enjoys his simple life with his family in the beauty of nature, and who is respected because he does a good job of achieving the goals expected of him and accepted by his family and his society. On the other hand, it seems that even though some people appear to be rich in material possessions, many of them seem to be miserable and consider themselves unsuc?cessful when judged by their own standards of success. Be?cause not all ventures can be successful, one should not set unrealistic goals for achieving success, but if one has self-con?fidence it would be unfortunate to set one's goals at too low a level of achievement.

A wise man once said to a young man who was experien?cing frustration (挫折)with his own professional success, "You do not have to set your goal to reach the moon in order to have success in travelling. Sometimes one can be very suc?cessful merely by taking a walk in the park or riding the sub?way downtown. " The man added, "You have not really failed and spoiled your chances for success until you have been un?successful at something you really like, and to which you have given your best effort."

5.According to the first paragraph, what is implied as basic in achieving success?

 A.     their life is busy and miserable

B.     they haven't reached their own standards

C.     they set their goals at too low a level

D.     they are not rich in material possessions

7. From the last paragraph we can tell that_______________ .

 A.     success means achieving great goals

B.     success comes from great goal setting

C.     success means efforts and favourites pay off

D.     success has nothing to do with the distance of your travel
