    6．The United States government wants to know what the public thinks about its findings on the safety of cloned animals．
    The Food and Drug Administration says meat and milk from clones of adult cattle，pigs and goats are safe to eat．An F．D．A．official called them"as safe to eat as the food we eat every day．"And when those clones reproduce sexually（有性繁殖），the agency says，their offspring（后代） are safe to eat as well．But research on cloned sheep is limited．So the F．D．A．proposes （提议） that sheep clones not be used for human food．
    The United States this year could become the first country to approve the sale of foods from cloned animals．First，however，the public will have ninety days to comment on three proposed documents．On December 28th the F．D．A．released a long report，called a draft risk assessment，along with two policy documents．
    The agency says it must receive comments by April second．The F．D．A．seemed ready to act several years ago，but an advisory committee called for more research．
    For now，the government will continue to ask producers to honor a request that they not sell foods from cloned animals．
    Clones are still rare．They cost a lot and are difficult to produce．
    The F．D．A．says most food from cloning is expected to come not from clones themselves，but from their sexually reproduced offspring．It says clones are expected to be used mostly as breeding animals to spread good qualities．
    Public opinion studies show most Americans do not like the idea of food from cloned animals．But this research also shows the public knows little about cloning．
    Cloning differs from genetic engineering．A cell taken from a so-called donor animals is grown into an embryo（胚胎）in the laboratory．Next，the embryo is placed into the uterus（子宫）of a female animal．If the process is successful，the pregnancy reaches full term and a genetic copy of the donor animal is born．

    4．The world's first self-driving taxis began picking up passengers in Singapore recently．
    Select members of the public can hail（招呼）a free ride through their smartphones in taxis operated by nuTonomy，an autonomous vehicle software slartup．While a number of companies，including Google and Volvo，have beers testing self-driving cars on public roads for several years，nuTooomy is the first to offer rides to the public．
    Its launch in Singapore is beating ride-hailing service Uber，which plans to-offer rides in autonomous cars in Pittsburgh soon．
    NuTonomy is starting small-six cars now，growing to a dozen by the end of the  year．The long-term goal is to have a fully self-driving taxi fleet （车队）to Singapore by 2018，to help cut the number of cars on Singapore s overcrowded roads from 900，000 to 300，000．Eventually，the model could he adopted in cities around the world．nuTonomy hopes．"When you are able to take that many cars off the road，it creates a  lot of possibilities．You can create smaller roads，you can create much smaller car parks，"said Doug Parker．nuTonomy's chief operating officer．
    For now，the taxis only ran in a 2.5-squart-mile  business and residential（住宅的）district called"one-north"，and  pick-ups and drop-offs are limited to specified locations．Riders must have an invitation   from nyTonomy to use the servicer．The company says dozens have signed up for the launch．and it plans to expand that list to thousands of people within a few months．
    The cars-modified Renault Zoe and Mitsubishi i-MiEV electrics-have a driver in front who is prepared to take hack the wheel and a researcher in back who watches the cars computers．Each car is fitted with six sets of Lidar-a detection system that uses lasers to operate like radar-including one that constantly spins on the roof，There are also two cameras on the dashboard to scan for obsiiicles （障碍） and detect changes in traffic lights．
    NuTonomy was formed in 2013．Earlier this year，the company was the first to win approval from Singapore's government to test self-driving cars in one-north．NgTonomy announced   a rearch partnership with Singa pore's Land Transport Authority earlier this month．
    Singapore is  ideal   because  it good weather，grail infrastructrue   and drivers who tend to obey traffic rules．As a land-locked island，the city of 5.4million people is seeking creative ways to grow its economy．so it's been supportive
