My parents have decided to take me to Britain for a visit. I am excited, hoped to make good use of this opportunity. Firstly, I will talk to native speaker as much as I can improve my English. Secondly, there are many attractions that interests me a lot, among which is Big Ben, Besides, football, that is popular in England, is my most favorite sport. I have been dreaming of watching a living football match there but now the dream will come true. My friend Alice lives in London. I will probable meet her. However I do, I am sure I will have a good time.

"Have you ever been out on a boat and felt it lifted up by a wave? Or have you jumped in the water and felt the rush of energy as waves came over you.?" asked Jamie Taylor of the Wave Energy Group at the University of Edinburgh. "There is certainly a lot of energy in waves," he said. Scientists are working to use that energy to make electricity. Most waves are created when winds blow across the ocean. "The wind starts out by making little ripples (Á°äô), but if they keep on blowing, those ripples get bigger and bigger and turn into waves," Taylor said. "Waves are one of nature's ways of picking up energy and then sending it off on a journey." When waves come toward the shore, people can set up dams to block the water and send it through a large wheel called a turbine (ÎÐÂÖ»ú). The turbine can then power an electrical generator to produce electricity.

"The resource is huge," said Janet Swain of the World Watch Institute. "We will never run out of wave power." Besides, wave energy does not create the same pollution as other energy sources, such as oil or coal. Oceans cover three-quarters of the Earth's surface---that would make wave power seem ideal for creating energy throughout the world, though there are some weak points yet to overcome.

Swain said that wave power still costs too much money. She also said that its effects on sea animals are still unknown. What is more, wave power could affect fishing and boat traffic. Traditional sources of energy like oil and gas may someday run out. "Demand for energy to power our TVs and computers, drive our cars, and heat and cool our homes is rising rapidly throughout the world," Swain said. In the future when you turn on a light, an ocean wave could be providing the electricity!

1.The underlined phrase "picking up" is closest in meaning to ______.

A. starting again B. speeding up

C. improving D. gathering

2.We can make better use of wave energy if we ______.

A. shorten its journey to thousands of homes

B. build more small power stations on the oceans

C. reduce the cost of turning it into electric power

D. quicken the steps of producing electricity

3.It can be inferred that some day we might not worry about ______.

A. our power supply B. our boat traffic

C. air pollution D. our supply of sea fish

Dear editor,

I have been getting along well with my father. However, as I¡¯m in Senior Three now, the question whether I should live at school or come back home for the nights has come to our family discussion. My father and I have different opinions over the matter and we are arguing over it these days.

My father insists that I should live at school. In the previous two years, I have been spending about 80 minutes every day to and from school. Living at school can help save a lot of time. In this way, I can have more time for my studies.

On the other hand, what I believe is that I should spend my nights at home. First of all, if I come home for the nights, I will have more freedom to arrange my studies. Meanwhile, I will have more time to communicate with my parents, which will make us understand each other better.

I don¡¯t want to make compromises and neither does my father, as it seems. Could you tell me what I should do? I would be grateful if you could give me some advice.

Your sincere reader,

Teddy

Facing the Enemies Within

We are not born with courage, but neither are we born with fear£®Fears, even the most basic ones, can totally destroy our ambitions£®Fear can destroy fortunes£®Fear can destroy relationships£®Fear, if left unchecked, can destroy our lives£®Fear is one of the many enemies living inside us.

_1.__

The first enemy we face is indecision(ÓÅÈá¹Ñ¶Ï)£®Indecision is the thief of opportunity£®_2._ Take a sword to this enemy.

The second enemy inside is doubt£®__3._ But you also can¡¯t let doubt take over£®Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities and doubt the opportunities£®Worst of all, they doubt themselves£®I¡¯m telling you, doubt will destroy your life and your chances of success£®It will empty both your bank account and your heart£®_4._

Do battle with the enemy£®Do battle with your fears£®_5.__ Be courageous in your life and in your pursuit of the things you want and the person you want to become.

A£®Sure, there¡¯s room for healthy doubt£®You can¡¯t believe everything

B£®Build your courage to fight what¡¯s holding you back, what¡¯s keeping you from your goals and dreams.

C£®Let me tell you about two of the other enemies we face from within.

D£®Below are the ways which might be useful for us to overcome our fears£®

E£®Doubt is an enemy£®Go after it£®Get rid of it.

F£®It will steal your chances for a better future.

G£®Some people doubt everything.

As a society we might want to rethink the time and money spent on education£¬so that these resources can benefit a greater percentage of the population£®Ideally£¬both high schools and colleges can prepare individuals for the ever-changing roles£®

High school degrees offer far less in the way of preparation for work than they might£¬or than many other nations currently offer£¬creating a growing skills gap in our economy£®We encourage students to go on to college whether they are prepared or not£¬or have a clear sense of purpose or interest£¬and now have the highest college dropout rate in the world£®

We might look to other countries for models of how high schools can offer better training£¬as well as the development of a work ethic(ÃÀµÂ)and the intellectual skills needed for continued learning and development£®

Meanwhile£¬the liberal arts(ÈËÎÄѧ¿Æ)become more important than ever£®In a knowledge economy where professional roles change rapidly and many college students are preparing for positions that may not even exist yet£¬the skill needed is one that prepares them for change and continued learning£®

Learning to express ideas well in both writing and speech£¬knowing how to find information£¬and knowing how to do research are all solid background skills for a wide variety of roles£¬and such training is more important than any particular major in a liberal arts college£®We need to continue to value broad preparation in thinking skills that will serve for a lifetime£®

Students also need to learn to work independently and to make responsible decisions£®The lengthening path to adulthood appears exacerbated£¨¶ñ»¯£©by parental involvement in the college years£®Given the rising investment in college education£¬parental concern is not surprising£¬but learning where and when to intervene will help students take more ownership of the outcomes of these increasingly costly educations£®

Taking exams in a large group setting can be stressful for students and for the staff members who are watching over them.

When classrooms are crowded and desks are close together, cheating might be tempting.

One university in Thailand came up with an anti-cheating hat that makes it almost impossible for students to see other students¡¯ papers£®A photo of the students wearing the anti-cheating hats made its way to the Internet, and the university was criticized for making students wear those ridiculous looking homemade hats£®The hats were made by stapling pieces of paper onto a headband, one to each side of the head.

After being criticized, senior academic staff at Kasetsart University in Bangkok, Thailand, released a statement saying that the hats idea came from students£®They said that in a bid to prevent cheating they asked the students for ideas on how to prevent cheating in the upcoming exam, which was being taken by almost one hundred students£®Students came up with different ideas, then the paper hat idea was selected by them as the most suitable.

The university claimed that no one was forced to use the hat, but they all chose to do so£®¡°When wearing the hat during the exam, students felt more relaxed, ¡±Nattadon Rungruangkitkrai, a lecturer at the university said£®¡°It was not meant to indicate that Kasetsart students often cheat on exams£®I apologize if the photo makes other people look at my students in a negative way, ¡±Rungruangkitkrai added.
