12.Helge and Kari Farsund, who live in Oslo,Norway, have been a couple for 50 years. Mr Farsund worrked as an engineer, while his wife was an intensive-care nurse at one point serving with the Red Cross in Rwanda, helping victims of the violent war in that country.Three years ago,a personal tragedy struck, when Mrs Farsund was found to have developed Alzheimer's(老年痴呆).'As the condition became worse,Mr Farsund began looking for a system that could help both of them live as normal a life as possible. He came across the healthcare technology company Abilia, which has come up with just such a network.
At the center\of the system is an iPad-like device. The screen has Skype, which allows carers to regularly check in with patients. It also has a planner for patients or carers to record up-coming events and provides spoken reminders about daily tasks, such as when they need to take medicine.
Some l,000 people now have the system installed in their homes, and 25 of them, including the Farsunds, are testing the latest version, which combines the screen with wirelessly connected sensors. The motion sensors know if you are in the room or open a door, and send out alarms, for instance,if the stove(电炉) is left on for more than 15 minutes or a per.son opens a door in the middle of the night. The second is a particular issue in Oslo, where sub-zero winters mean some Alzheimer's patients are freezing to death.
"With.this kind of system,it allows people to ta ke care of themselves, which is the most important thing,"says vice president Oystein Johnsen. For him,any move to improve city life needs to begin with people."Smart cities are coming and they need to start with individuals in their own home,"he says."It also saves the govemment money. In Norway it cost£100,000 per year to have someone in a home, while this system costs 15,000. That is a lot of money to save."

17.This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths. It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth,we transcend (超越) it.Once we truly know that life is difficult-once we truly understand and accept it-then life is no longer difficult.Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.
Most do not fully see this truth.Instead they complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy.It seems to them that difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class,or even their nation.
What makes life difficult is that the process of fa cing and solving problems is a painful one.Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness,or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.
Yet,it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning.Problems are the serious test that tells us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of human spirit,we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said,"Those things that hurt, instruct."It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problems.
32.From the passage,it can be inferred thatB.

B.we become stronger by meeting and solving the problems of life

A.most people feel life is easy
B.the writer feels life is easy

A.encourage them to learn
B.teach them to fear the pain of solving the problem
C.help them learn to deal with pain
D.teach them how to respect problems
35.The saying from Benjamin Franklin"Those things that hurt, instruct."suggests thatC.
A.we do not learn from experience
B.we do not learn when we are in pain
C.pain teaches us important lessons
D.pain cannot be avoided.

2.When former American President Bill Clinton traveled to South Korea to visit President Kim Young Sam,he repeatedly referred to the Korean president's wife as Mrs.Kim.By mistake,President Clinton's advisers thought that Koreans have the same naming customs as the Japanese.Clinton had not been told that,in Korea,wives keep their family names.President Kim Young Sam's wife was named Sohn Myong Suk.Therefore,she should be addressed (称谓) as Mrs.Sohn.
President Clinton arrived in Korea directly after leaving Japan and had not changed his culture thinking patterns.His failure to follow Korean customs gave the impression that Korea was not as important to him as Japan.
In addition to Koreans,some Asian husbands and wives do not share the same family names.This practice often puzzles English-speaking teachers when talking with a pupil's parents.They become puzzled about the student's correct last name.Placing the family name first is common among a number of Asian cultures.
Mexican naming customs are different as well.When a woman marries,she keeps her family name and adds her husband's name after the word de (of).This affects how they fill in forms in the United States.When requested to fill in a middle name,they generally write the father's family name.But Mexicans are addressed by the family name of the mother.This often causes puzzlement.
Here are a few ways to deal with such difficult situations:don't always think that a married woman uses her husband's last name.Remember that in many Asian cultures,the order of first and last names is reversed (颠倒).Ask which name a person would prefer to use.If the name is difficult to pronounce,admit it,and ask the person to help you say it correctly.
25.The story of Bill Clinton is used toB.
A.improve US-Korean relations
B.introduce the topic of the text
C.describe his visit to Korea
D.tell us how to address a person
26.When a woman marries in Korea,sheA.
A.continues to use her family name
B.uses her husband's given name
C.shares her husband's family name
D.adds her husband's given name to hers
27.To address a married woman properly,you'd betterC.
A.use her middle name
B.use her husband's first name
C.ask her which name she likes
D.change the order of her names.
