Do you want to be productive(富有成效的)at work or at home? Here's what you should do.

Turn off television

I used to tell myself that I needed a break. So, when the kids slept I turned on the cable and watched whatever program that caught my fancy. Often, I found myself not watching, just channel-surfing. And I didn’t end up watching a full program. I decided one day to just give up on TV as it made me sleep late and woke up exhausted(疲惫的).

If you want to be productive, cut off TV. You are better off reading a book. Without TV, I have managed to finish many books which I have bought but never read.

Limit Internet Use

The other big distraction that can make you sleep late is the Internet. Probably because you will be checking your emails, updating your blog, watching YouTube, etc. Try limiting the use of it at home, or switch it to the morning session.

Nowadays, I check all my personal emails early in the morning. When I get into work, I find myself less tempted to check personal emails.

Know Your Priorities(优先考虑的事)

Really, it is all about the choices you make and the priorities you have. If you know it is competitive out there in the world, how can you be a better worker than the person who is also aiming for the position above you?

Rest Early, Rise Early

You want to be productive? Rise early, read more books, have more energy, be more focused and set standards for others to catch up. It’s as simple as that.

1.The passage aims to give advice on how to ________.

A. take better care of our kids at home.

B. balance our work and energy well.

C. divide time between work and family.

D. compete against others for a better position.

2.What does the author mainly use to support her theory?

A. Ancient wisdom B. Internet information

C. Popular beliefs D. Personal experience

3.The author used to be in the habit of _________.

A. changing channels frequently when watching TV.

B. checking all her personal emails in the morning.

C. watching her favorite TV programs with her kids.

D. reading the books immediately after she bought them.

Dear Mr. Shyamalan,

According to the box office, congratulations are in order. It seems your new movie, Split, is doing gangbusters. That means millions of people all over the world have seen or will soon see your story about a man who is suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).

As much as I'm rooting for you as an artist, Mr. Shyamalan, personally, I think you climbed to success on the overburdened backs of the mentally ill.

As a person who suffers from multiple(多面的)personalities, as well as a psychologist with professional knowledge and skills in the subject, I feel it is my duty to school you in a few facts: People who suffer from DID are not, generally speaking, scary or cheating. We are normal people who silently suffer from a painful condition in which our sense of who we are feels divided into broken parts. Our condition is often caused by a history of severe and repeated child abuse(虐待). In truth, we are victims(受害者) of unimaginable violence.

With the release of your movie, you have become my bully(恃强凌弱者). I am personally harmed by the absurd fixed image you use in Split. Your description of Kevin Crumb as one gender confused, cross-dressing multiple with a strong liking for violence has the same effect as shouting across the playground, “People with DID are dangerous nut jobs!”

I have lived for years with the shame created by movies such as yours. Despite being a successful doctor who runs a charity for adult survivors of child abuse, I live with constant anxiety that people will learn of my diagnosis(诊断). For no matter how long I’ve known someone or how highly they think of me, once they know I'm a multiple, the reaction is imaginable.

In the future, I’d appreciate it if you stopped using our pain and suffering as materials for your entertainment.

Michelle Stevens

1.What does the author think of Shyamalan’s success?

A. He was very fortunate. B. He deserved it.

C. His efforts were worthwhile. D. He got it in an immoral way.

2.What’s the probable cause of DID?

A. Poor living conditions. B. Extreme anxiety from life.

C. Tense relations among people. D. Being badly treated in childhood.

3.Who is Kevin Crumb according to the text?

A. A friend of Mr. Shyamalan’s.

B. A character in Split.

C. A patient of Michelle Stevens’s.

D. A psychologist with multiple personalities.

4.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A. To give the movie Split a review.

B. To show respect for people with DID.

C. To state that the movie Split hurt people with DID.

D. To argue that people with DID can make a difference.

Coffee drink is widespread. When people argue about whether coffee is good for health, they’re usually thinking of the health of the coffee drinker. Is it good for your heart? Does it increase blood pressure? Does it help you concentrate? However, coffee affects the health of the human population in other ways, too.

Traditionally, coffee bushes were planted under the shade of taller trees. However, more and more farmers in Latin America are deforesting the land to grow full sun coffees. At first, this increases production because more coffee bushes can be planted if there aren’t any trees. With increased production come increased profits.

Unfortunately, deforesting for coffee production immediately decreases the local wildlife habitat, because native birds nest and hide from predators(捕食者)in the tall trees and migrating birds rest there.

Furthermore, in the long term, the full-sun method also damages the ecosystem because more chemical fertilizers and pesticides(杀虫剂)are needed to grow the coffee. The fertilizers and pesticides kill insects that eat coffee plant, and then the birds eat the poisoned insects and also die. The chemicals kill or sicken other animals as well, and can even enter the water that people will eventually drink.

Fortunately, farmers in Central and South America are beginning to grow more coffee bushes in the shade. We can support these farmers by buying coffee with such labels as "shade-grown" and "bird-friendly".

Sure, these varieties might cost a little more. But we're paying for the health of the birds, the land, ourselves, and the planet. I think it’s worth it.

1.Which opinion does the author agree with?

A. People should buy full-sun coffee.

B. Shade-grown coffee should be supported.

C. Farmers should change the places to grow coffee.

D. Pesticides should be forbidden in coffee planting.

2.Compared with the traditional method, what advantage does the full-sun method have?

A. It can protect the ecosystem.

B. It can promote people's health.

C. It can provide mare nests for birds.

D. It can increase the production of coffee.

3.How do farmers get more land to grow full-sun coffee?

A. They cut down trees.

B. They move to other countries.

C. They turn grassland into farmland.

D. They buy more land from other farmers.

4.What can we learn from the passage?

A. It is quite worthwhile to buy shade-grown coffee at any cost.

B. Farmers all have realized the importance of protecting the environment now.

C. South American farmers are taking action to plant coffee in the traditional way.

D. The full-sun method does good to the health of human beings in the long run.

Forgiving(原谅) someone who has hurt you or let you down is never an easy thing. Several new studies, however, say that it could have a lot of health benefits. When you think of forgiveness, you probably don’t think of it as being a health or medical problem. Studies from Stanford University, on the other hand, show that something like anger(愤怒) can change your well-being.

When cartoon book characters like the Incredible Hulk get angry, they change colors and often gain special power. In the real world, anger is less obvious and may be more dangerous. That’s why Professor Fred Luskin, founder of the Stanford Forgiveness Project and author of Forgive for Good, say holding on to anger and hatred(仇恨) can harm your physical and mental health. Two new studies seem to show the same idea. The studies find that people who are able to forgive feel less stress, less back pain, and less unhappiness. They also have fewer headaches, lower blood pressure and fewer problems on sleeping.

So it doesn’t matter if your anger is caused by the traffic or other things. Learning to let it go is important. Skills such as deep breath or thought can help. Or just ask yourself if it’s worth hurting yourself by staying angry with someone else.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean that you simply accept what happened and say it’s OK. Instead, it’s a way of making peace with yourself about what happened in the past.

1.The author of the passage tries to make his opinion clear ___________.

A. by showing his own examples B. based on his own experience.

C. by using some studies. D. by introducing some patients.

2.The example of the cartoon book characters in the passage is taken to ________.

A. support the opinion that anger and hatred harm your physical and mental health

B. introduce a famous expert

C. let the readers know the different colors of cartoon faces

D. show how to control one’s temper

3.The underlined phrase “ holding on to” in the passage possibly means_______.

A. taking away B. keeping up

C. getting rid of D. learning about
