阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

If you have to miss one meal day(or if you want to do so),which meal will cause you fewest health problems if you don't eat it? lf they have to make a decision of this type, most people(especially dieters or very busy people)will choose to skip breakfast.

However, many experts in the field of health consider breakfast(the meal which “breaks”your“fast”which started the night before)to be the most important meal of the day.If we eat a good breakfast, they say,we will have the energy and nutrients we need to begin our working day with vigor and hopefully with good humor.Nevertheless, many people skip breakfast or substitute a donut and a cup of coffee for a well-balanced meal. What hap-pens if we ignore the importance of breakfast?

One recent study conducted in the United States tested a large number of people.Participants included both males and females who ranged in age from 12 to 83.During the experiment, these people were given a variety of breakfasts, and sometimes, they had to skip breakfast completely.Special tests, including blood tests and endurance tests, were set up to analyze how well the participants'bodies functioned when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast.

The results showed that if a person eats an adequate breakfast,he or she will work more efficiently and more productively than if he or she skips breakfast or eats a very poor breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person's work involves mental activity. The study showed that if schoolchildren eat fruit, eggs, bread, and milk before going to school, they will learn more quickly and will be able to concentrate on their lesson for a longer period of time than if their breakfast diet is inadequate.

The study also showed that, contrary to what many people believe,if you skip break-fast,you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry if they skip breakfast that they eat too much for lunch and end up gaining weight instead of losing. So remember,if you are on a diet, skipping breakfast will not help you.You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.

1.According to the passage,if people must miss one meal a day, most of them would skip________.

[ ]

A.lunch
B.breakfast
C.dinner
D.supper

2.In many experts'eyes in the field of health, which of the following is the most important meal of the day?

[ ]

A.Lunch
B.Breakfast
C.Dinner
D.Supper

3.From the recent study,we can find________.

[ ]

A.if a person skips breakfast or eats a very poor breakfast,he or she will work more efficiently and more productively

B.if a person eats an adequate breakfast,he or she will gain weight

C.if a person's work involves mental activity eats a rich breakfast,he or she will work efficiently

D.if a child doesn't eat breakfast,he will learn more quickly

4.Which of the following is true?

[ ]

A.If you skip breakfast, you will work with energy

B.If you skip breakfast, you will lose weight

C.Breakfast is the most important meal of the day

D.If you are off on a diet, you can skip breakfast

All areas of the world face a nurses shortage. But the shortage is most severe in developing countries. Many of their nurses move to the more developed nations for better pay, better working conditions and better chances for career development. For example, nearly 2,000 nurses left the Caribbean between 2002 and 2006.

The Caribbean nations currently have about 1 nurse for every 1,000 people. The ratio(比例) of nurses to population is about 10 times higher in the United States and countries in the European Union(EU). Now, more than 21,000 nurses who trained in the Caribbean are working in the United States, Canada and Britain.

Gaetan Lafortune is an official of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(O.E.C.D) in Paris. He says the nurses shortage also affects industrialized countries. He says, “There is concern in most O.E.C.D.countries that the number of nurses is too small to meet the demand. And what is more worrying is that their concern is sort of growing.” Mr Lafortune says a large number of nurses are expected to retire within the next 10 years. At the same time, the health care needs of aging populations are expected to grow, intensifying the shortage of nurses.

Gaetan Lafortune said, “In the U.S., for instance, some researchers have found that there may be a shortage of close to a million nurses by 2020.” The United States is 1 of the 21 countries in the O.C.E.D. Gaetan Lafortune says in the recent years many of the countries increased their efforts to hire foreign nurses.      阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A,B,C,D)中,选出最佳选项。

Mike McClure walked into Sarasota Bay for a little fishing on a beautiful day last April. This afternoon, the water was shallow enough at low tide  that McClure could easily walk 100 yards offshore and cast(投)his line in any direction.

Near sunset, still without a fish, he decided to turn back. Rather than turn to his earlier course, he chose a more direct path toward shore, thinking the bay wouldn't get deeper along the way. Instead, he was trapped. He tried to walk in different directions, but shallower water eluded(避开)him. Finally, he decided his safest choice was to head straight for land.

"Within  about five steps, the water was coming in through the top of the waders(高筒防水胶靴)," says McClure.

He felt the deadweight of the flooding waders pulling him down and knew that if he didn't get out of them, he would drown. But he failed to kick his way out of the waders. Instead, they pulled him completely below the surface.

Back onshore, Eliza Cameron, 19, Loren Niurka Mora, 20, and Caitlin Petro, 20, had been watching McClure fish as they rested on the grass after a long week of classes. They saw McClure go under and then heard him cry, "Help!”

The three friends kicked off their shoes and ran into the bay. They were all good swimmers, but all hid a fear that he might pull them down too because they'd have to dive to save him.

When they reached him, he'd managed to kick himself out the waders, but his eyes had partly rolled back. Cameron and Mora each hooked an arm under his shoulders, while Petro supported his back and held his hand. Then the three friends tried their best to tug him towards shore. Finally, they all returned to shore safely.

56.Mike McClure didn't turn back by his earlier course because _____.

   A. He wanted to choose a short course

   B. His earlier course was dangerous

   C. He just wanted to take a risk

   D. He knew where the water was deep

57.What directly trapped Mike McClure in the bay?

   A. His wrong decision         B. The coming high tide

   C. His waders' being flooded    D. The depth of water

58.During the rescue, ____.

   A. The three women were afraid of being trapped in the water

B.Cameron and Petro helped catch  Mike McClure's arms

   C. The three women removed Mike McClure's waders

   D. Mike McClure still wore his flooding waders

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

The best diet for you is the one that you can follow for the rest of your life. Most diets can get you to your goal if you do exactly what they say.

The first thing to do is to look at what you’re doing now. If it’s easier for you to see where you’re going wrong by writing down what you eat for the next week, then do that.

When you become familiar with the foods you choose to eat every day, it’s easy to start to subsitute(用…代替)healthier alternatives and make better choices. Let’s take a look at some common lifestyle choices that could help you lose weight easily.

Got a soda habit?

Drink a lot of soda or fruit juices? Substitute water and tea instead. Studies show that just this one substitution can help you drop 20 pounds in a year.

Spending a lot of time buying food at the drivethrough fast food joint?

Avoid anything that you can get through a drivethrough window. Bring your lunch instead. Home cooking almost automatically guarantees a meal that’s lower in fat and calories than anything you could get through a window.

Never finish a meal without grease(油脂) on your hands?

Deep-fried foods are loaded with calories and fat. Fry in a little olive oil, instead.

Always having a lot of sauces?

Holding the mayo(蛋黄酱)or anything else that’s creamy(含乳脂的)? If you’re ordering sandwiches with special sauce or mayo, then you’re eating a lot more calories and fat grams than you think you are. Some sauces can add more than 20 grams of fat, and hundreds of calories to your lunch. Mustard(芥茉)is a good alternative. It’s flavorful, and has virtually no calories or fat.

Take a look at what you’re doing, and make changes you can live with.

56.All the following will help you lose weight EXCEPT________.

         A.mustard        B.soda      C.tea        D.olive oil

57.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A.To make a list of the food you like best can lose weight.

B.To get a good idea of different foods is necessary.

C.Home cooking is more delicious than snacks.

D.Dropping 20 pounds in a year is difficult.

58.We can learn from the passage that________.

A.mayo is beneficial to people’s health   B.most people think that mustard tastes bad

C.cooking is a waste of time   D.drinking water contributes to weight loss

59.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A.The best diet is a lifestyle change         B.Stop buying fast food

C.What to do for the rest of your life       D.Lead a healthy lifestyle
